Disko Partizani! sees Shantel successfully synthesizing his experiences as a producer, musician and DJ to create catchy, energetic and festive pop songs, full of hooks and surprises. Eastern European elements are adopted with real respect for their cultural roots, and then fused and transformed into a new form of urban music which works as an interface between east and west. Venerable melodies and rhythms – some of them dating back to the Byzantine Empire – are being rejuvenated, and used as a new source of inspiration for modern, trans-European pop, a welcome alternative to some of the more worn-out Anglo-Saxon musical models… But, beyond these underlying concepts, this is first and foremost an album of pure, unadulterated fun. 

Shantel conceived these songs while travelling, and found inspiration in the most unlikely locations: a railroad station in Romania, a highway stop in Greece, an airport terminal in Istanbul, an Arabic Café in Tel-Aviv, a taxi stand in Sofia, the back seat in a Mercedes Benz belonging to a Macedonian gypsy king, backstages in London, Paris and Rio de Janeiro.

One year later, Shantel presented the blueprint for Disko Partizani to his musician friends. He was welcomed with simultaneous reactions of joy and dismay: "What is that? Belly dance meets hip hop, electronica-fuelled Balkan stompers, klezmer reggae rock’n’roll tunes? Have you gone mad?" Shantel needed brave and skilled warriors to bring the concept to fruition. He  brought together a rich cast of instrumentalists and singers to complement the duo he forms with his studio partner Marcus Darius (who plays drums, while Shantel sings, programs, plays guitar, percussion and keyboards). These numerous and distinguished guests include Serbian singer Vesna Petkovic, trumpeter Marko Markovic (the son and Nr 1 sideman of Serbian brass music king Boban Markovic, Bulgarian clarinettist Filip Simeonov (from Taraf de Haidouks), Shantel's old Greek friend, Thessaloniki-based singer and composer Jannis Karis, François Castiello, who plays accordion with famous French band Bratsch, Canadian singer Brenna MacCrimmon, who achieved cult status in Istanbul through Fatih Akin's "Crossing the Bridge" film, Bulgarian saxophonist Vladimir Karparov, Sashko Wladigeroff with his biting trumpet sound, Izmir-based violinist Costas Ramos, keyboardist Marcus Schumacher (from the band Äl Jawala), Ruth Maria Renner aka Miss Platnum, a Berlin-based Romanian r’n’b vocalist, Viennese musicians Kurt Bauer and Lothar Lässer, who have frequently been seen playing violin and accordion at Shantel’s side on stages all over the world, members of Tel Aviv's Balkan surf rock band Boom Pam, Ukrainian DJ/vocalist Yuriy Gurzhy (of Russendisko fame),  trumpeter Roy Paci (Manu Chao), London bass player Ken Taylor, Berlin reggae/dancehall queen Mantiz… the list is as long as it is colourful, and a  linguistic kaleidoscope prevailed during the studio session. This all reflects the style and sound of this album: where else can you hear a song in both Turkish and Greek ?  Which other record contains vocals in English, Romanian, Serbian, Rom (Gypsy), as well as an ode to "gypsyfication" (Tsiganizatsia, tsiganizatsia, come on baby, this is what you need, as the chorus of the title track goes…) ?

Quickie from us: "HOLY SHIT, FINALLY THIS FUCKING SONG IS OUT... This song was meant to be an Edit to promote a show we had at LIV in december. Initially we had Disclosure's 'Fire Starts to Burn' over the track and thought the drop was way to hot to use someone else's vocal. So we had this ridiculous idea to create a song around the concept of the #SELFIE. We really weren't sure if this was the most brilliant idea, or worst idea we ever had... So we had our home girl Alexis come over and within an hour we had 2 verses and the song done. At that point in time we thought it was hilarious but we were quite sure how it would be received, but seeing as we aren't pussbags and music is about experimenting and having fun, we put it out. 2 days later the song had 200k plays and about 1% negative feedback. So we went to Dim Mak who we always loved as a label and asked them if they were interested in it, if we went back in added a new verse and changed the drops. 6 Weeks later here we are, with an amazing Music Video compiled with all this great submitted #Selfies from Fans, Friends, DJS and Celebs. So we hope you all enjoy the tune as much as we did putting this whole project together. This is our first EVER Original release and it would mean the world to us if you all bought the song, shared the video and took #SELFIE video... ”

Frangosyriani is an old rebetiko song of the 1930s written by Markos Vamvakaris.
The greek band Locomondo recorded this Reggae version in Jamaica in 2005.
The Reggae version was featured in Fatih Akins Film "Soul Kitchen" which won the special jury price at the Venice Film Festival 2009.

D E N A - "Cash, Diamond Rings, Swimming Pools" Minimix

Pasatempos is track no.4 in our first album 'Imam Baildi' (2007). It's a remix of a 1940's rembetiko tune, composed by Manolis Chiotis. The lyrics are about a guy saying his girl treats him like a pasatempos (that's a snack Greeks eat while doing something else, sort of the way you eat pop-corn). He says, you just use me to pass your time (pasa tempo) when in reality you're after someone else and you just use me as backup to make the other guy jealous. And he concludes: leave me if you like, but please just don't let the other guy know that you treated me like this. (which, by the way, totally defeats the stereotype of macho Greek guys, and rightly so...)

O Pasatempos

Samba Clarina is track no 2 on our first album 'Imam Baildi' (2007). It's a mix of gypsy clarinet melodies and samba beats, very danceable (we think). DJ Panko has also remixed the track, this is the original album version.

To diko sou to marazi is track no 5 in our new album 'The Imam Baildi Cookbook'. Samples come from a 1950's tune by Giorgos Mitsakis, sung by Christakis (yes, it's a guy singing and that's how his voice sounds like, we' haven't repitched it). The lyrics are about a guy complaining to his girl that he's suffering from all the trouble his girl's giving him. The original tune was very danceable and we gave it a disco beat with a swing feel and incorporated some old piano and big band swing riffs to the mix.

To Diko Sou To Marazi

Remix of the homonymous 1950’s track by Manolis Chiotis, also known as ‘Bolero’ (the title ‘thlipsi’ means ‘sorrow’). Vocals by Mary Linda. Chiotis’ perception of latin music is so essential that it makes one wonder whether he was actually born into that music. This probably explains why the brass theme we added, which originally comes from an old Puertorican tune, sounds as if it was actually written for this track.

Vocals: Eleni Tsaligopoulou, rhymes: Eisvoleas.

Music and lyrics based on the original 1935 track. The lyrics are about a nargile (hookah) that goes out each time a girls tries to smoke. The girl interprets that as a sign that her lover is not satisfied by her. Eisvoleas came up with the idea to combine the track with hip hop rhymes about hash (and love) and Eleni sang the original lyrics.
