Joana Moher and Joaquin Jimenez Sauma met during the World Listening Day 2018, at Convent Sant Agusti,  in Barcelona, without previously knowing each other. When planning to propose an interactive piece for this event, the idea was to create a piece in real-time. While Joana was making noises, harvesting sounds from the Convento walls and her body, improvising thoughts and dancing to a microphone, Joaquin was recording and arranging the audio being generated. During this performance, a system of reactive visuals was illustrating the process for the audience. The subject of that year’s event was “What the future sounds like”, and participants were invited to imagine how sounds in the future will be. A few years later, and thanks to the technology from the future, in 2021 we can finally hear the result of this collaboration as a collection of unreleased tracks. The listener will be able to perceive this recordings from 2018 arranged in 2021, produced with open ears and new tools that were not available in the year of recording, taking us to a real interpretation of how the future would sound like. Instead of listening to the past, we present a vision of the future from the year of recording. 

So the Future is now! We decided to metabolize those sounds into a visual experiment called PHOSPHOROUS.
Textures make sound_time bounded creating an episodic acoustic environment, by intersecting touch with listening . Exploring visually, samples of electrical code signs into speculation-imagination-flow. Noises of being material: green seas made of iron, orange skies with no oxygen, black lava earth, tectonic plates bubbling pores and interstellar silence to give birth to hybrids terrestrials aquatic beings in an immersive entropic realm. Phosphorus forged by an improbable sequence of nuclear reactions in exploding stars is the most cosmically rare of the six elements to produce life. It is found in bone, teeth, DNA, RNA, cell-membranes and energy-transfer-moleculas ATP. I is also an irreplaceable element as food for plants in agriculture fertilizers and a range of industrial-consumer products in circulation r-shaping our Earth's critical geomorphic future.

@forms-of-minutiae and TBA21–Academy present "upstream ensemble", a communal happening and aqueous sound piece initiated and composed by field recordist, artist, and f–o–m co-founder Pablo Diserens (@pablodiserens)

During the 2022/23 digital residency hosted by TBA21–Academy’s Ocean-Archive.org, Pablo Diserens launched an open call inviting members of its online platform ocean comm/uni/ty (and external enthusiasts) to venture into the world and record aqueous sonic encounters. The aim of this collective liquid attuning was to gather sound recordings from various wet ecologies while stimulating listening and field recording gestures regardless of any previous experience.

Recordings from 35 contributors were woven into the long-form sound composition "upstream ensemble" which navigates between the multiplicity of the water cycle as a sounding body. The work moves upstream through oceans, rivers, pipe networks, ponds, and glaciers while investigating the continuous flow of water and the environments that surround it. Listeners encounter drifting habitats trickling with the songs of sea lions, dolphins, blue whales, humpback whales, Arctic terns, and algae photosynthesis – as well as with the invasive hums of submarines’ sonars, boats, and naval industries. With "upstream ensemble" some of the world’s aqueous fauna, flora, geologies, and technologies mingle into a synchronized motion that documents the sonic articulations of these wet zones.

In resonance with Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening practice and inspired by Rachel Carson’s exploration of the intertidal zone in her book "The Edge of the Sea", this project contributes to an ever-expanding list of works that propose a focus on listening as a way of engaging and existing with the planet’s waters. By stimulating shared listening and attuning practices, Pablo Diserens aims to develop a sense of interconnectedness by blurring the boundaries between species as well as environments. Experiencing aqueous biomes both individually and collectively acts as a way of rethinking our relationships with the world. Despite these being mostly solitary experiences, Pablo believes that field recording and listening are communal and environmental practices that form gateways for earthly synchronicity and world mapping in time and space. Thus listening in turn can become a political act that sparks emotional bonds with the world and its biotic communities.

pablo diserens & the ocean comm/uni/ty — upstream ensemble [fom09]

The show delves into a peculiar niche of South Italian music repertoires exploring themes connected to the life of donkeys and horses. Expect old songs tipically recited by horse cart drivers in the streets of places such as Napoli, Palermo, and Salento, as well as a selection of other sort of songs entirely dedicated to the life of the two species.

The mix will explore the intricate relationship between man and these animals, the hardships of farmers life in post-war Italy and the love for these creatures, but also their dreadful exploitation that used to take place in mines and fields, or still happening in contemporary clandestine horse racing.

The Scientific Americans – Load And Go! (FULL ALBUM)

Kenyan,, Uganda-born and raised @MCYallah links up with frequent collaborator @Debmaster on debut LP 'Kubali'.

It's only right for an album from one of East Africa's brightest MC talents to land on one of the region's brightest labels so, with that in mind, it should come as no surprise that the LP is scheduled for release on @HakunaKulala, the flourishing sister label to @Nyege-Nyege-Tapes.

Coming in at 11-tracks, our pick of the bunch just had to be 'Nasonga'. With a weighty, murky instrumental that fuses forward-thinking Kampala bass flavour with motifs reminiscent of dark, dubstep-ish Bristolian fire, MC Yallah and her hard, cold flow ride the beat like a pro. 

The 'Kubali' LP releases on Hakuna Kualala on September 27.
