"Sumsemann" was a big cockroach who lived in the spring on a chestnut tree in the garden of Peter's parents, not far from the large lawn with many asters. He had been married, but his wife was now dead. She had been eaten by a chicken that found her when she was crawling about in the yard in the afternoon looking for some food. For a cockchafer, it is in fact very dangerous to go for a walk during the day. Just as people sleep at night, so cockchafers sleep during the day.

This text is the opening to the book "Peterchens Mondfahrt" (Peter and Anneli's Journey to the Moon) by Gerdt von Bassewitz. It is one of the best-loved German children's books and has been a bestseller in Germany to this day.

Hi friends,

Today we’ve got a mix from Don Alex Albert, a DJ and producer from Mexico City who has been coming up in conversation with friends down there for a minute now. He’s got new music out on drecords.mx, and - from what I’m told - has been gracing the decks of parties and afters in his city alongside a glowing crew of artists down there.

I took this mix on a run yesterday morning across the Kosciusko Bridge, which crosses the Newtown Creek to connect Greenpoint and Queens. From the pedestrian path you get a view that feels true to New York as I know it: an Emerald City in the distance and miles of raw, industrious outer borough in the foreground, raw enough to smell from the bridge.  

I've been referring to this lately as “Industrial Greenpoint”, the area back behind Morgan Avenue on the west side of the BQE that’s long sat nearby, largely unrendered on my map. Wide, empty roads run toward Queens until they hit the creek, where work has recently started and abruptly stopped on a new city park. The area’s relative quiet and proximity to my apartment has made it an oasis of sorts for me lately. 

I’ve spent my whole life in New York and as such have become accustomed to getting excited when I find a few rows of industrial architecture that hasn’t been flipped yet. Skating around the area I’ve found a number of really quality looking spaces that my imagination paints you all into, two story buildings with roofs you could fit a few dozen or so people on with a sound system angled right, the kind of place I’d find some of you this summer if things weren’t so complicated.

It’s not sad though, it’s inspiring; if you squint you can imagine how some of these buildings could look in a few years with the right people and the right ideas. I took a picture of it, it's below - couldn’t you imagine parties by the water like they do in Berlin? Maybe we could get a few years in somewhere.

I’m looking forward to hosting Don Alex Albert at a Bliss Point party once this has passed and we’re all together again. Maybe by the time he arrives a few of us will have ingratiated ourselves with the stout owner of a stout Greenpoint warehouse and we’ll use it for this music we love so much, the kind Alex has graciously provided two hours of in this fine mix.
