Pre-reggae roots music from the Caribbean and South America. These early songs, some of which are almost one hundred years old, all share a deep melancholy. They combine thoughtful lyricism and haunting melodies atop driving percussion. Sad Calypso, Biguine, Mento, Kaiso, and Cumbia convene in this mix to create a specific mood. It’s a mood I’m eternally seeking from other music - consciousness you can move to.
