Brazzaville –– the bar, not the city –– is one of Beirut’s hidden gems. Situated in the city’s suburbs, between the Sunday flea market (Souk el Ahad) and two art spaces, Beirut Art Center and Ashkal Alwan, the busy bar is surrounded by a beautiful outdoor garden space.

Even though the idea bar was conceived during Lebanon’s most challenging period, the manager was able to build a sense of community between the staff, the clients and the owners. It feels like home.

I’m the creative chef, and I sometimes take shifts for the night. When it gets crowded, which is often, things get hectic. Amid the crowd, music, drunken chatter, clinking of glasses, I can disconnect by focusing on the task at hand. Sounds are drowned out, and I can find peace in repetitive work.

Mar Mikhael / Beirut (Twilight)
Music box, wifi router, generator, cars on the highway, drums, bedroom and balcony ambiance 

A neighborhood known for its artisans and car mechanics, Mar Mikhael became highly gentrified in the last decade. It became home to the art, design, food and nightlife scene of Beirut. Specialty coffeeshops, trendy bars and high-end concept stores stood next to mini markets, corner cobbler shops and car repair garages. The area was heavily damaged by the August 4 explosion, as it is around 1km away from the Beirut port. Many stores, cafes, restaurants closed shop, especially with the pandemic and ongoing economic crisis. Night in Mar Mikhael has become synonymous with calm –– a new kind of calm, filled with dread. 

My partner and I moved into our Mar Mikhael apartment on the eve of the October 17 revolution. We experienced the most challenging years Lebanon has ever been through in the comfort of our two-bedroom, sunlit, fourth-floor apartment. We were both home when the explosion happened. The house was heavily damaged, and I suffered serious injuries.

We moved back into the newly fixed apartment in January 2021. Mar Mikhael had changed, and so had we. Suddenly, sounds seemed amplified. Helicopters, planes, cars, generators, neighbors moving furniture, wind and thunder. Especially at night. We felt like strangers in our own home.

Mar Mikhael/ Qalaq psychogeographic sound trail

An animistic sound-scape using composed as well as technologically recomposed field recordings of animal and element sounds from the Minett, creating recognisable sound-scapes as well as fictive dreamscapes.

I went to the Minett, the terre rouge of the south west of Luxembourg, to Rumelange, Esch-sur-Alzette, Belvaux and the Giele Botter,  to listen to the landscape’s pluralities and to what possibilities might emerge.

Improvisation VII "Träumerei - Destruction"

"child run" is a single that is part of a cycle of small songs/studies, where melodies, arrangements, and harmonies have been borrowed from Bach. A play of transformations, subtractions, and new perspectives on ancient materials.

"child run" is a variation on a d minor articulation. I don't remember where i found it: what i remember is just a kind of step, maybe from a gigue, maybe from other dances, and then just a play of variation through it.
