This cassette set was recorded off the live WFNX broadcast by fellow Spin Cycle regular, Dan a.k.a. Crikit(boy).  Dan has been kind enough to share several of these recordings with the world — and we all owe him a huge thanks! 

In this first mix from July 1999, DJ Tym Ryan plays tracks from the "Torchbearers" compilation released on Risk Records, which included appearances by Liquid Todd and Markus Schulz, among others. DJ Mike Gioscia (@gioscia) recorded all of the voiceover promos, while the Genial Host, Charlie, added the usual mischievous commentary (including a funny rant about Maine).

Behold! Another Spin Cycle mixtape from the archives of fellow friend of Lansdowne Street, Dan a.k.a. Crikit(boy). 

Next up we have DJ Tym Ryan's 60-minute promotional cassette that was distributed in advance Spin Cycle moving next door to Karma in the Summer of 2001. 

This mix is of personal interest to me, as it captures the sound of Spin Cycle as it moved towards a more progressive, big room house sound and away from funkier tech house. It also was recorded just a few months before I had the chance to open for Tym at Karma during Thanksgiving weekend of that same year.

DJ Tym Ryan - Spin Cycle @ Karma (Boston) - PROMO CASSETTE - 7/20/2001

The third and final cassette set from Spin Cycle regular, Dan a.k.a. Crikit(boy), was recorded off the live WFNX broadcast in 2001. 

Here we have a late-era Spin Cycle mix with Tym playing progressive house all night long on the Friday before Halloween, 2001. 

Something worth keeping in mind with this mix was that the entire nightlife industry was in flux at this time, as this was just one month removed from the events of 9/11. There were almost daily threats and warnings about public gatherings at shopping malls, concerts, and sporting events — and Lansdowne Street was a major concern as it was where Red Sox fans and night owls would combine en masse behind the Green Monster. Paranoia was at an all-time high — something that I think you can hear in when the host, Jay-son, gets on the mic towards the second part of the mix and has gone from completely competent to completely drunk in less than an hour. Dark times indeed! 

Adding to the chaos, Avalon and Axis had also decided to sort of merge over the summer, creating the "Avaland" party that spanned both clubs and was the reason that Spin Cycle moved next door to 9 Lansdowne, at Karma Club. What may have seemed like a good aughts "super-sizing" concept actually just homogenized nightlife in Boston and made sure that neither club maintained its character. It was not long before the entire block was rezoned to make way for what eventually became House of Blues Boston.

Hydrow Vogue 90's Ballroom PRIDE Journey (60 min)

Recorded on Sony MZ-1 Minidisc from air signal radio broadcast on 104.1 WBCN in Boston, MA during the summer of 1999. This aired several days after the festival had ended. I edited out all of the commercials on this recording a long time ago, so that is why there are a few spots where the audio jumps forward. In dust we trust!

Ep. 213: This Beat Is Mine

This week, we have a very special guest mix sent to us from halfway around the world — courtesy of legendary Eurodance deejay BENEDETTO SCUOLAVECCHIO.

Raised on the southern outskirts of Rome during the height of Italo Disco, Benedetto worked his way up the ranks of Italy's hottest nightclubs, beginning as a bartender, lightshow jockey, substitute DJ, and eventually as a resident DJ as the country's taste in music was changing to a more international sound. In the 1990's he made a name for himself by playing the hottest  Eurodance hits to Italy's most exclusive, upscale clientele, at venues such as Ultimo Impero, Baia Imperiale, The East Side, Marabu, and 7Up. He holds a Guinness World Record for having played the 12" promo single of "Rhythm Is A Dancer," by Snap!, 14 times in a row during a DJ set in the summer of 1992.

After building a legion of fans in his home country, Benedetto began touring the top Eurodance venues worldwide throughout the mid-to-late 1990s, including Palacio Gaviria in Madrid, Juliana's in Tokyo, and Boa Café in Toronto. 

Since 2001, Benedetto has taken a step back from the turntables to pursue a quieter passion from his childhood: tree shaping. These days, he passes most of the year sculpting branches into art, from his remote cabin in Ontario, Canada, where he lives with his two rabbits, Graziana and Betsy.

Benedetto is not on social media, and did not elaborate on what else he has been up to during semi-retirement. The email he sent with the mix reads: 

"A collection of my most greatest highlights and memories for me. Away from my many years performing it is now a great time to look back and also enjoy these moments of the dancefloor which have caused many friendships that they lasted the test of times."

Across 110th Street

Back in 2000-2002, I produced a series of progressive house mix CDs for my friends at college. 

For my own amusement, I made liner notes and CD covers for each of them that meticulously parodied the popular Global Underground mix CD series that had taken the world by storm over the past half decade. 

Unlike the actual GU series that would transport the listener to an exotic location with beautiful people and a world-renowned DJ, my CDs would keep the listener firmly tethered to the cold, grey tundra of Lorain County, Ohio, where they were forced to listen to a terrible DJ (me!) playing tracks that they probably didn't want to hear in the first place.

As it turns out, those original, highly stylized GU liner notes that I was parodying were written by the former editor of Mixmag, Dom Phillips.

Just this past week, the world learned that Dom and his colleague Bruno Pereira were likely murdered for their journalistic activism, which sought to protect the indigenous people and environment of the Amazon rainforest. I had no idea that this was what Dom Phillips had been up to since his days in the dance music world. I also learned just this week that one of my best friends, who happened to be a foreign correspondent based in Brazil during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, had briefly met Dom during that time and said that he was a really great guy and outstanding journalist. I sincerely wish all of Dom's friends and family members comfort in the wake of this horrible tragedy.

Thinking about all of this over the past week, I decided to dust off one of my old Global Underground parody CDs (GU:NuBreed became GU:InBreed) and play it on the radio and post it here, as well. And, of course, we have the silly, 20-year old parody pullquote from the liner notes, written by the fictional character "Dim Phillips." 

As silly and dumb as the joke was, it shows how influential Dom's writing was during the rise of dance music in the late 1990s/early 00's. I want to offer a heartfelt thanks to Dom on behalf of the global dance music community.

Okay, so this is the oldest mix of mine that I still have in my archives. 

It was recorded in May of 2000, as a practice run-through before our big senior project / party / fundraiser before graduating — the G.A.S.P. Rave. This was to be a 200+ student event at Milton Academy, outside of Boston, MA. 

We organized this insane version of a high school dance in partnership with the school's gay/straight alliance, and raised over $3000 for the Children's AIDS Project in Boston, supporting children and families affected by maternal transmission of HIV.

This mix was done from my high school dorm room on a pair of rudimentary CDJ-100s and Pioneer DJM-300s mixer, back before I was playing records (I was convinced that digital was the future of DJing. I did not realize at the time that I would hate the future!!!) As you can tell, I was really influenced by the French house and American filter house scene. I think half of the songs on here are by Bob Sinclar, Daft Punk, or Armand Van Helden.

In true 90's rave fashion, the cover art was a direct remix/parody of Paul Oakenfold's "Tranceport," a ubiquitous trance mix CD that we really detested at that time. This was kind of an inside joke, because we got in constant arguments with our dorm-mates about how house was so clearly much better than trance! And hey, we were right.

Back when I was living in NYC, I got an email from @kendrakicks telling me that Daft Punk were coming to Coney Island. That was all I needed to hear! I was too young to see them in 1997 for the Daftendirekt Tour, so I wasn't going to miss out on this one. And it did not disappoint!

I have to be honest, I was not expecting the show to be that good! I really did not like "Human After All," and wasn't sure why Daft Punk was playing a minor league baseball stadium and not a nightclub. But wow, this was really something else.

My favorite memory of that night was sitting in the stands and seeing these two young, geeky teenagers who reminded me of a younger version of myself, sitting right in front of us getting totally hyped as The Rapture were finishing their opening set. They were frantically checking their watches every few minutes. Finally I tapped one of them on the shoulder and asked why they came out to hear Daft Punk.

"Well, we're best friends, and every Bar Mitzvah we've ever been to, they always play 'One More Time' and we just love that song! So we told our parents we were going to the movies and then get some food, but we actually just drove his mom's minivan here from Long Island and we're staying out as long as we can so we can get home before curfew at 11pm!"

Lucky for followers of this Instagram account, you can re-live the glory of that night yourself, which was recorded on DAT by a friend of Simply Paradise guest dj @kendrakicks and was briefly posted online on a website called humanrobotsinbrooklyn.com (it got shut down within 48 hours of being posted).

But I have my copy of the recording, and I've posted it to my Soundcloud. If you listen closely, you can hear a very excited Kendra in the crowd, imploring you to drink and dance in the rain!

This 2.5 cassette set was recorded off the live WFNX broadcast by former Spin Cycle promotions/guest list wizard and my dear friend, Kendra B.(https://soundcloud.com/kendrakicks) Kendra has had these tapes in the same green Jeep Wrangler she used to park on Landsdowne Street back in the late 90's, and listened to them regularly until her cassette deck recently bit the dust. 

In my opinion, this is one of the best, most accurate, and most complete depictions of Spin Cycle in its heyday. DJ Tym Ryan is in top form, mixing hard, disco, and tech house seamlessly for the Axis regulars and dropping a number of Spin Cycle anthems along the way. X-Night at Axis DJ Mike Gioscia (https://soundcloud.com/gioscia) recorded all of the voiceover promos, while the Genial Host, Charlie, added the usual mischievous commentary.

Ep. 188: Sesame’s Treet

This is a short, 1-hour guest mix of Detroit techno and dance classics for Prof. Matthew Heck's undergraduate class at Brandeis University, called "Love is the Message."

The intent of this mix is to give a feel for diverse sounds that influenced party culture in Detroit in the 1980's, paving the way for what we now call Detroit techno. Some of the tracks in the first fifteen minutes of this mix are NOT produced by Detroit artists — this is intentional. Detroit's legendary radio DJ, The Electrifying Mojo, would broadcast eclectic sounds like these to homes across the region, providing a futuristic, utopian musical landscape that transcended genres, socioeconomics, and racial boundaries. This was the context that inspired local artists to create their own original sound, which in 1988 was officially presented to the UK market as "Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit."
