Nymus - Texture Kid

The gegenschein, or counter shine, is a very feint brightening of the night sky centered on the point directly opposite the sun.  It is a very indirect source of light—sunlight reflecting off of the very fine particles that make up interplanetary dust.  This is an appropriate metaphor for the kind of sound world I have tried to create using a solo violin, a work consisting mostly of very fast arpeggiated and tremolo-like figures involving natural harmonics.  Due to the speed of these figures, the harmonics only have time to partially sound, yielding a rapid succession of very feint overtones.  The result is a fragile yet brilliant flickering of sound, mostly quiet and diffuse yet played with great intensity and aggression.  My thanks to Piotr Szewczyk who commissioned and premiered the work as part of his Violin Futura project.

I was trying to set up a microphone one day and, when first connected, it made all sorts of utterly weird sounds. I recorded some of it and then twisted and contorted it into this.

Algo-jazz remix of a piece of mine from quite a few years ago. Since some melodies and certain important bass riffs are from the original, this one is about 50% algorithmic. Two algorithmic frameworks were used: a Python-based interactive bossa nova generator(which was given a lead sheet for the III-ii-i-i-III-IV-i-i progression) and a little bit of Haskell/Euterpea for the high synth. The Python framework is part of my work on the MUSICA project and is an outgrowth of a similar but non-interactive jazz generator I wrote with Haskell.

0C = "Zero C." Partially algorithmic work. This piece was created by taking about 6min of material from my Zero Order II generative system for the ROLI Lightpad block and recombining segments of each instruments' parts as I saw fit, adding in a little bit of generative stuff from Euterpea (although very little), and putting some hand-made hi-hats over the generative kick part.
