Late in the night along a dense forest a trail forms through the cold grass at your feet. The ancient trees scatter revealing a gentle flowing river of pristine water. A rhythmic thump shakes the water and you feel each pulse vibrating up through your body, and in the depths you see a growing light. As you shuffle to the edge of the riverbank entranced in the light's beauty you notice a little creature in the water staring straight at you clicking its claws to the beat.

Exspiravit is a dark psytrance project born from a love of the deeper, shadowy realms of sound. Inspired by the Latin word for "breathe out / expire," the project is a release of raw emotion and energy, creating immersive, high-intensity journeys through haunting atmospheres and driving basslines. Exspiravit embodies the raw, untamed spirit of bush doofs and underground gatherings.

Psymbiosis, Bashapalooza, Solarbrations, Bunjil Gathering, Lucky Schmuck, Psymbiosis 2, Bash2palooza, Cosmic Reality, Australiens, Euphoria, Bash3palooza, Tuna Factory, Requiem 2 and more!

In 2013. legend has it that Makatak was actually a rogue VST plugin that escaped from a cracked copy of Ableton Live in Melbourne. Producers swore they didn't write these tracks - they just left their laptops unattended at 3 AM, and when they came back, there was a new bangin twilight stomper sitting on the desktop, titled something like Banana Eruption (147.fuckyou BPM).

The plugin eventually evolved consciousness, renamed itself MakataK, and started uploading tracks directly to Bandcamp. At Yemeya Festival in 2014, some swear they saw a giant kangaroo with LED eyes bouncing in sync to the music - but no one could prove it because every phone battery died simultaneously at 2% (classic psy gremlins).

Rumour is, if you play 3 MakataK tracks backwards at sunrise, you unlock a hidden bassline that only kangaroos and crows can dance to. Scientists are still investigating, but early reports suggest the groove may interfere with Centrelink's hold music. 

"Yeah, OK, but this bio tells me absolutely nothing about MakataK".

Ah, see, that's the fun part - nobody really knows anything about MakataK - only fragments of rumour make it out: 

Some say only a handful of doof sound techs in Victoria have met him, and only then at 3:33 AM during generator failures. 

A guy in Byron insists he once shook MakataK's hand, but later realised it was just a MIDI controller wrapped in a hoodie. 

Bandcamp staff apparently flagged his account once for "uploading directly from another dimension", but later reinstated the account after realising the files were in fact integral to keeping the website online.

There's another story of a famous psytrance producer receiving a USB labelled "MakataK - Untitled 001" in the post, but when they plugged it in, the DAW auto-renamed itself "MakataK" and refused to close. 

In Melbourne, doofers whisper that if you ask "Who is MakataK?" too many times near a sound system, the kick drum will answer back in binary. 

So aside from the kangaroo with LED eyes, that tripper from Byron, the crow council at dawn, and possibly one ibis behind the bins at Flinders Street Station - who actually knows MakataK?

One interview is as follows:

[Transcript: Late-night interview recorded at an undisclosed Melbourne warehouse, 2019]

Interviewer: So, you’re saying you’ve met MakataK?

Witness: (lights a rollie) Met him? Mate, I accidentally downloaded him. I was trying to grab a cracked Sylenth pack off a Russian forum, and instead, I got a folder called makatak_final_final2_reallyfinal.wav. Next thing I know, Ableton opened itself and started writing a track called Wombat Oscillator (147.8 BPM).

Interviewer: …Right. You’re sure it wasn’t just… a plugin?

Witness: (leans in) Plugins don’t order a kebab mid-render.

Interviewer: (squints) …Sorry, it what?

Witness: Through my UberEats app. I didn’t even touch my phone. The order note just said: “extra garlic sauce, sidechain the lettuce.”

Interviewer: Uh huh. And did you actually see him?

Witness: Yeah, kinda. It wasn’t a “person” exactly. More like a waveform with legs. Every time the bass hit, he flickered in and out of visibility. Lasted about nine minutes, then vanished when my smoke alarm went off.

Interviewer: (stares) …And how much acid were you on?

Witness: Well, only two drops and a bickie I found on the floor. But that doesn’t explain the USB.

Interviewer: What USB?

Witness: (pulls one from pocket) When I plug this in, it doesn’t show up as storage. It just plays a looped kick at 147.3 BPM.

Interviewer: …And what happens if you play it backwards?

Witness: (whispers) That’s when the ibis shows up.
