PSALMS – VOL. IX: WATCHTOWER HYMNS – The Shaken Remnant

Synopsis:
Volume IX (Psalms 121–135) plays like a staircase of choir songs for travelers—pilgrims singing under a watchful God. It opens with “Keeper of My Steps,” a steady ascent psalm about the God who doesn’t sleep, then enters the city with “City of Our Feet,” praying peace over old stones and thrones. “Eyes Lifted Higher” cries for mercy under scorn, and “If Not for You” is a full-choir testimony of almost being swept away. The middle stretch circles trust and community: “Like the Mountain” anchors faith in a ring of hills, “Tears in One Hand” walks the path of sowing in grief and reaping in laughter, “House We Can’t Build” and “Belonging at the Table” frame home, children, and daily work as gifts you can’t secure by hustle alone. The back half leans harder into scars and quiet hope: “Lines on My Back” remembers persecution without surrender, “Watchman’s Morning” waits for God like dawn on night shift, “Quieted” is a tiny lullaby of humility, “Promise in the Bones” sings David’s oath and God’s reply, “Oil and Dew” celebrates unity as thick blessing, “Night Shift Blessing” nods to those who worship in the dark hours, and “Name Above the Noise” closes with a full-band choir anthem over dead idols and fading empires. Arrangements are choir-forward—call-and-response, stacked harmonies, and room-singing energy—while still sounding like a Shaken Remnant record, not a worship set.

No April Fools joke here. After dropping the out-of-nowhere “Cross Countries” single earlier this week, Cecil Otter announces the immediate release of his new EP Dear Echo, available digitally through Doomtree Records.  Longtime Doomtree crew member and behind-the-scenes production wizard, Cecil has spent years developing his unique and signature sound, and Dear Echo pushes the genre boundaries even further for his most modern, lush, and experimental offering yet.  Recorded in Fall Creek, WI at Justin Vernon’s renowned April Base Studios, the six-track EP includes three brand new songs alongside their accompanying instrumentals, with production, songwriting, and vocals masterfully handled by Cecil himself.  Available now for download, Dear Echo will also see a vinyl release later this year.  Standard and deluxe LP packages are now available for pre-order from the Doomtree webstore, and include limited-edition white vinyl and an extremely rare signed-and-numbered screen-print series featuring the artwork Cecil created during the Dear Echo recording sessions.

After self-producing several of his own solo albums throughout the 2000’s, Cecil Otter rose to fame as one half of the mashup duo Wugazi, a remix project that overlapped the gritty raps of Wu-Tang Clan with the sounds of post-rock vets Fugazi.  The project went instantly viral and garnered high praise from the likes of NBC, Rolling Stone, MTV, and even Jay-Z’s own site, Life + Times.  Dear Echo marks Cecil’s first new collection of solo material since 2008’s Rebel Yellow.

Recently, a good friend of Aesop Rock's, Kurt Hayashi unexpectedly passed away. Kurt was a well-known skate videographer and he also shot the music video for Aesop's "Hot Dogs". A portion of the proceeds from all "Rogue Wave" sales will be donated to the Hayashi family in Kurt's honor.

"Rogue Wave feels like a long journal entry to me - perhaps in the vein of Hot Dogs and Klutz. I really enjoy skipping the hook entirely. It doesn’t always work - but when it does it just feels right. To me, this song is a small boat lost at sea, rowing for hours, days, losing all track of time and direction - 360 degrees of nothing but ocean. My old friend Coro captured the concept perfectly in the cover image. We’ve included a small print of the image with no text inside each 7” for your viewing pleasure. You should probably hang it in your hallway. Additionally, we are offering a long sleeve tee in raincoat yellow, also from the pen of Coro. I’ve been a little timid over the years to showcase my own drawings, probably because I’ve been out of practice, and also because people know me for my music. It’s always a little dicey promoting a medium you’re not really known for, and I feel the same nerves I felt when I was young, playing people demos for the first time. That said - I’ve been drawing a fair amount in recent years, and finally decided to collect a lot of the images together for a music video. My long time collaborator and friend Rob Shaw pieced them together in a way that feels similar to the song - an uninterrupted stream of information.
