P.O.S and Astronautalis have joined forces to form FOUR FISTS. Doomtree Records proudly presents their debut release: a limited-edition 7-inch featuring two new songs, “Please Go” and “MMMMMHMMMMM,” and the instrumental version of each.

Astronautalis is part emcee, part method actor, with an uncanny ability to channel characters on the edge—of a breakdown, of a revelation, of a fistfight. P.O.S (Rhymesayers/Doomtree) made his name as a gifted risk-taker, fashioning head-nodding beats from strange noises, and writing anthemic lyrics from unexpected vantage points.

These first two tracks from FOUR FISTS were produced collaboratively by the duo, holed up in P.O.S’ attic during an exceptionally brutal Minnesota winter. In these songs, listeners will hear the rappers’ usual sharpness and a nod to traditional notions of hip-hop collaborations, but their noir approach yields an entirely new sound: dark choral layers and punk rock gang vocals create a sense of impending doom. “Please Go” is a haunting number that runs on thick, brooding bass; it’s shaped by a frayed synth, whispered vocal takes, and soaring strings that sweep in and out of the darkness like cars passing in the distance. “MMMMMHMMMMM” opens with quick snares, in the sharp staccato stabs of an Underwood typewriter, and a bass synth that pulses like an idling outboard motor, till the track explodes into a wall of layered drums and throat-shredding vocals—P.O.S and Astronautalis at their most deadly. The two songs clock in under 8 minutes and still hit like a ton of bricks, leaving you dizzy, breathless, and eager for this duo’s coming full length album.

I'm a huge fan of Tech N9ne, and when I first heard this song, I needed to hear it again as soon as possible! Off of 88 Keys & Counting from Grieves & Budo. After self-releasing his debut album Irreversible in 2007, Grieves took that momentum out on the road developing an ever growing fan base from the west coast to the east coast.

While in Seattle, Grieves would eventually hook up with a talented producer and multi-instrumentalist by the name of Budo. In 2008 the duo would hook up and create 15 tracks of sample-free, melody-driven, analog warmth titled 88 Keys & Counting. A combination of sining and rapping tethered together by guitar, horn, and keyboard driven instrumentals.

Fresh off his success with Doomtree’s No Kings album, super producer Lazerbeak has announced a new solo project: LAVA BANGERS, due on January 24th. His contributions to No Kings helped earn the album a pile of accolades from critics across the country, including Pitchfork, CMJ (“great hip-hop”), The Onion (A-), and The Star Tribune (Twin Cities album of the year).

LAVA BANGERS is a seamless mix of 20 unreleased Beak instrumental tracks, with transitions, blends, and scratches by DJ Plain Ole Bill. Where many hip hop instrumental albums lean toward the brooding melancholy of strings, down-tempo drums, and slow builds—or simplistic 4-bar loops—Lazerbeak breaks from the pack to create a hard-hitting collection of head-nodders with victorious horn-lines, layered melodies, and monstrous percussion. The tracks are brief and full, songs in their own right with swift dynamic changes and purposeful, deliberate structures. Start to finish, LAVA BANGERS is a composition in motion, never affording listeners the opportunity for boredom or fatigue. One of Lazerbeak’s great strengths may be his flawless timing, his ability to anticipate the exact moment the listener is primed for a change: a dramatic drop, a new, rising melody, an onslaught of fresh drums. In the end, LAVA BANGERS has a closer cousin in Ratatat than in DJ Shadow.

LAVA BANGERS began in Beak’s basement studio as a collection of 150 beats, all created and stored in his MPC. Plain Ole Bill (live DJ for P.O.S and Brother Ali, and contributor to Atmosphere’s Strictly Leakage and Wugazi’s 13 Chambers) helped to transform the project into a curated collection of Beak’s best work, more polished and more dynamic than the standard beat tape. An internationally touring DJ with more than ten years in the game, Bill’s ear and technical ability (particularly for sequence and transitions) create a higher standard for the project, and it shows. LAVA BANGERS sounds like the work of young veterans, whose talents and enthusiasm are backed and carried by their mastery of craft.

Lazerbeak will perform a solo set on every night of Doomtree’s No Kings Tour, beginning January 2012 and hitting more than 40 cities in the United States and Canada.
