"1999" is a track from Rebel Yellow, his first official full-length album, and it is Cecil at his finest. He's a prophet turned cardshark. He's striking matches on his whiskers and lighting up your cigarette. He's buying the saloon a round, then conducting their ensemble with a loaded pistol and a whisky on the rocks.

The end of 2008 saw Grieves enlisting the help of friend and collaborator Budo to co-produce Together/Apart bringing his signature swiss-army knife, multi-instrumental backdrop to Grieves' hauntingly poignant narrative. The album began taking shape in New York as the two built off the success 88 Keys and Counting had generated and paired it with the intensity they developed from  their live performances.  The recording process began to shadow the theme of the album as it saw tracks recorded in Colorado and Washington in addition to New York, infusing it with a mixture of regional influences while still maintaining a cohesive sound.  As the album neared completion the title took on a double meaning for Grieves as he explored new subject matter in the absence of trust, refuge in addiction, acceptance and honesty in self-reflection, and trying to find his place in the world without forgetting his roots.  

Together/Apart concludes three years of self-discovery that has ultimately lead to Grieves' most emotionally charged and daring album to date.

I'm a huge fan of Tech N9ne, and when I first heard this song, I needed to hear it again as soon as possible! I wanted to see if I could hang with some of the sickest choppers around, so with a little creativity, I picked some small pieces of the song to make a beat out of the beat to rap on. I love this beat. I think ICETEP captured some amazing feeling in this one, big rises and falls, sweeping synths, I don’t know, there is just something unique and special about that beat to me. This was the first beat I got for this album, and it was the last song I finished; I wound up turning it in the day before we went to mastering. The song is about immediacy, and that sense of desperation in immediacy.  I wrote this in memoriam of some lost friends. Something woke in me when they died. Something fierce and urgent. And I wanted to share that sense of urgency on this song, to share that expression of being relentlessly present and driven to do whatever it is that you want to do.

Rap music from the near and bleak future; or more aptly, from next week’s dystopia. Artería Verité is a concept album that ended up being more future-realist than conceptual.

While on tour two years ago, the newly formed AIR CREDITS— Chicago rapper ShowYouSuck and producer Steve Reidell of The Hood Internet— came by the Minneapolis studio of SIMS (Doomtree, Shredders) to collaborate for the first Air Credits album Broadcasted. Sims then took Air Credits on tour in support of his 2016 album More Than Ever, largely produced by Minneapolis artist ICETEP. Immediately following that tour, these four met up in the studio (first in Chicago, then later in Minneapolis) to create Artería Verité. 

Sims and ShowYouSuck handle the raps, pulp-driven snapshots from the wasteland and its inhabitants, their means for survival, their need to commune, their arterial link to one another through underground channels of communique. ICETEP and Reidell handle the production, sweeping synths over a vascular pulsing of low frequencies creating a tension, like a machine seeing its own blood. The songs speak to our baser needs to find each other, especially when in the shit.

Known for welding hip-hop with guitar squalls and screamed vocals, on WDELH P.O.S. steps away from his noisy past in favor of futuristic beats fit for a Berlin nightclub. Bringing it all into focus is all-star producer and mix engineer Andrew Dawson (P.O.S.’s former high school classmate), who has worked on platinum releases from the likes of Kanye West, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne and Fun.
