The Upbeats: “‘Again I' is one of our favourite songs off the Primitive Technique LP.  It's us teaming up with MC Armanni Reign and dropping the tempo for the only tune on the album that varies from the 170bpm realm. It's a glimpse of some of the other material we have been working with him that see us slowing things down and exploring some more beatsy/hip hop inspired music.

Originally this tune wasn't even really intended to be on the LP, but we played it to the Noisia guys and they were really feelin' it and said that we should try and make it part of the album - now we can't imagine not having it on there!

We have remixes of ‘Again I’ from 3 artists we really love; TC who's always been pushing boundaries in Drum 'n Bass and is doing some amazing new music currently, Mono/Poly who has always impressed us with the sickest beats and all round crazy kooky-ness, and Posij who has been doing some wicked stuff and going from strength to strength since we heard his first EP on Noisia’s Division Recordings.”

Carefully finessing this album, the Ram imprint is about to drum & bass for a transatlantic journey. It’s a showcase of what the genre can offer… electric vibes which pulses through its veins and cherished memories of a tempo which pulls you into the morning’s early hours.

But with the Miami conference pedestalling every major genre which has made electronic music so popular, there would be a void if Ram didn’t step up. And as one of the most withstanding labels from the last two decades, they’ve delivered with immense style. Audio is first to deliver, crashing in at full speed and leaving no survivors with the tear out anthem which is ‘Combust’. Then taking you into a web of technicality and meticulous composition is Calyx & Teebee’s ‘Wipe Out’. There are also a huge selection of Vips to firmly solidify why it’s important to revisit tunes which are still to this day so highly sought after; leading the way is Loadstar’s ‘Under Pressure’ Vip, which set a stunning precedent in 2014.

So, now it’s time take the legacy of Hornchurch to Miami and lay down the same roots which are still prevalent throughout the UK today. And adding that to Miami’s reputation, it’s a match which is set to make history.


Wipeout

This track was inspired by older, 90's era D&B. Especially the intro, the chord sequence in the intro is a little throwback to those times. The title of the track came from the vocal sample which you can barely hear, save for the end of the track. "Adapt, Evolve, Become." It's sampled from a popular TV show, but I'll refrain from posting it's title for obvious reasons. The bassline was created using two instances of FM8, one duplicated but the waveforms were pitched up by octaves, or by fifths. Then it was resampled, so that when pitched up the LFO increased in speed. I wanted the intro to get across that it all builds up to that one sound, and the entire track is built around it.

Emperor - Mindgames

This track pretty much explains itself. The name doesn't stand for anything, it is just 'Simple' with the vowels removed, hence the vocal sample. This one was inspired by the minimal era that came around a few years ago, old Rockwell, Icicle, Amoss, and Octane & DLR tracks that were bare bones, but not. They had all the needed to have, and that's something that's extremely hard to do nowadays without sounding empty.

That Door once more shows off Dabs strange musicality, with an almost ambient, liquid intro that segues – in typical Eatbrain style – into a dancefloor monster with percussive basslines, playing off against, clipped pitched up drums and a weird metal snare sound and other layered sound effects and synth that accents the minimal beat perfectly, before the intro returns, taking the tune off into epic territory before returning the gutter once again.

Being a production line of carefully crafted composition with a meticulous production standard, Calyx & Teebee have delivered yet again. And after dominating the Beatport Top 100 with their most recent single ‘A Day That Never Comes / Snakes & Ladders’, they won’t be applying the brakes anytime soon, especially in the lead up to their greatly anticipated second album on the Ram imprint.

Back on vocal duties, Calyx demonstrates the pair’s multi-dimensional approach to beat making. With plucky percussion relaying you through bouncing subs and a drivingly solid bassline, it defines their vast repertoire of style. They’re not scared to dip into unfamiliar territories, with Calyx’s cool vocals sitting on top of lulling guitar rhythms to provide the first part of a diverse and brilliantly crafted record. 

‘Sawn Off’ rolls out next; it’s a grittier track than its predecessor, with a conundrum of hi-hats and aggressive drum patterns. Pounding pads take you towards a colossal break, heighten by the effect of a cleverly placed sample. The track ricochets throughout, not losing momentum or impact, with an intricately weaved structure, one only achievable by a team who’ve been running the game for decades.  

With an album laying just out of reach, each single is bringing us closer and closer to the inevitable. All four tracks prove they’re still a formidable force to be reckoned with; this LP will only emphasise that fact.
