"the inspiration for this mix came from a special afterparty where i DJ’d after a rave i had co-organized in montreal last october. i had spent most of the night dealing with the cops and got a fine for noise. once at the afterparty, i got to channel my frustration into music; i played dub techno for hours. to me, the airy but deep grooves of that music provide space for both introspection and release. hope you feel it too."

In the spirit of celebrating the 10th installment of the Health Connection mix series. I thought it was fitting for another (Sounds From..) tribute mix and when our favorite kindred spirit Mario Cotto presented the idea of doing his take on the almighty Swordsman Andrew Weatherall bottomless canyon of music.It was a no brainer for Mario to take it on.

Mario had this to say, “A maverick and icon, Andrew Weatherall cut a singular path in Dance Music and Culture. As a DJ, Producer, Remixer, Writer, Label Head, Promoter and Visual Artist, he was an essential figure in the development of Acid House and the birth of Rave in late 80s London.

He was however, fairly enigmatic and shunned the limelight, instead using various musical collaborations to explore his many musical interests, most notably The Sabres of Paradise, Two Lone Swordsmen and later The Asphodells & Woodleigh Research Facility. A unique amalgam of Dub, Techno, Rockabilly, Punk, Industrial and House, Weatherall sounds like a lot of different things, but nothing sounds quite like Weatherall.”

Norwegian Charlotte Bendiks came up on the famous Tromsø techno sound of her homeland. It means her music is mystical, frosty and metallic, which made it perfectly at home on the Cómeme label where she released her first EP. She has also had outings on Love OD Communications and throws her own parties back home, all while serving up off kilter DJ sets informed by growing up in an isolated and lonely arctic town. That lends them a sense of escapism, fantasy and story telling that when married to her so called “body music” style, make them utterly compelling. 

Over the course of ninety minutes, she segues through hallucinogenic synth tracks, loosely jumbled percussion and acid flecked slow motion house that will jerk you into action. It’s a playful and intoxicating mix that will warm you through on a chilly evening and conjures party vibes in brilliantly off kilter and unusual ways. On this evidence, it looks like 2018 could well be her year.

Dekmantel Podcast 148 - Charlotte Bendiks

Not for the first time, our mix series now turns to a DJs who has earned himself a Europe-wide reputation thanks to his essential skills as a resident. He is Phillip Jondo and his musical playground is Salon des Amateurs in Dusseldorf, a place where he serves up mixes of minimal wave and mutant disco, leftfield house and industrial that also takes him on the road to plenty of key gigs. Next to this he holds down a monthly show, We R All Egyptians, on London’s NTS and it is another brooding affair filled with ceremonial rhythms. Next to this, he also works as Garland with Simon Weins. Their debut release Preludes lands on Lullabies for Insomniacs on January 1st and is a loosely rhythmic offering that echoes with wonder and channels plenty of otherworldly magic. 

For us, though, he has put together an ‘uptempo and clubby’ selection that is beautiful weird and beguiling and is nothing like a regular mix of four to the floor styles. Instead it is a fizzing and restless brew of mystic drums and forest synths, of impish spirits and cinematic post-human landscapes that make for an intriguing listen. Ending up with a flurry of future electro, it’s a mix that shows Jondo’s musical world is truly unique and offers you a sneak preview of what to expect when he plays Dekmantel Selectors for the first time in 2018.

Daniel Monaco started his musical career as a professional bass player and toured with big acts before becoming a solo artist. Daniel eventually manifested a fascination for obscure Italo Disco, Psychedelic Disco, Dark Disco, Acid House and 90s Trance & Techno that can be heard in his various Dj sets & productions .
It's something he calls a "Cosmic Combination."

This mix comes courtesy of one of our resident DJs and regular collaborators, @DylanReece. Dylan is a Texas native who co-produces our raves and designs our bottle packaging. Most importantly though, he is a super fierce DJ that has been slaying Austin for years and recently venues around the country.

For this mix Mr. Reece gives you Stevie Nicks on acid... house. Recorded in his home studio with candles ablaze and Palo Santo burning, Dylan gives us nearly an hour and a half of music, riding tides of anxiety and release.
