Marie Wilhelmine Anders’ new, multi-genre concept album “Frozen Music” follows up on her albums “Travels” (Broque) and “She’s Leaving” (Noisy Meditation). Being her fifth album, which refers to the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson, "Frozen Music" also evolves around another main source if inspiration that is drum ’n’ bass: Sunchase (who mastered „Frozen Music“ superbly), dBridge, Calibre, Krust, Goldie (Mother!), Optical, T.Power, LTJ Bukem, Banaczech, are just a few of her main influences. While searching for the connecting elements between the poem template from the late 19th century and the time when d’n’b was created 100 years later, she found the sound of the foghorn, invented in the year Stevenson was born. The foghorn was first installed in Jamaican sound systems in the 1950s, and it created an unexpected power in the bass range, and from there found its way into the raves and d’n’b productions of the children of the "Windrush" generation in the UK. The second connecting element Marie found was the music of Claude Debussy: his "liquid works" (David Toop) - influenced by the music of Java, Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan - in turn influenced the later generation of ambient music producers. The chord progressions from his "Prelude" from "Pour Le Piano" reappear in a stretched and filtered form in Marie’s ambient intro track "Prelude" and in a few other places in "Frozen Music“. The nine tracks of "Frozen Music" find their very own form in the atmospheric recreation of the pictorial language of Stevenson's poem "Evensong" and in its relationship to some of the most fascinating genres in electronic music. Being a classically trained composer Marie juxtaposes ambient, breaks, d’n’b and techno. She approaches the boundaries of genres with a kind of innocence, always listening to the connections between the different styles. In “Frozen Music” she picks up on these connections. This works so well because the musical forms often don't adhere to what you would deem traditional structure. Dynamic quality, form, sound design and, last but not least, the mix of her music are all the more carefully coordinated and result in a catchy flow that makes „Frozen Music“ another masterpiece, that not only brings food for thought, but, most importantly, transports the grooving d’n’b sound of the 90’s onto the contemporary stage.

Based on my 5-year "Deep dive into the 4 Gospels," this album is composed of 3 sections: The first 4 songs tell about Jesus from the viewpoint of 4 different characters in the Gospels. The next 6 songs are inspired by individual lines of The Lord's Prayer which Jesus taught his followers to pray. And the last 2 songs are best described as observations inspired by my daily reading aloud of the 4 Gospels. For 5 years I've been on a "spiritual quest" based on Hebrews 12:2, which tells us to "fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith."

Musically and stylistically these songs are piano-based middle-of-the-road orchestral/retro-pop (of the 1980's flavor). Most of the lead and background vocals were sung by me, although some of the songs also have vocals sung by my dear wife Linda before her Alzheimer's disease progressed to the point that she is no longer able to sing. This is a great musical loss to me and to you, the listener, as she was always the better singer of the two of us! But she still enjoys listening to these songs and singing along with a line or two when possible.

I hope and pray that these songs may inspire you to begin your own "Deep dive into the 4 Gospels". Here is how to do it: 
1. Get an easy-to-read Bible translation like the NIV (my favorite).
2. Go to the Gospel According to Matthew.
3. Start at the beginning and read it ALOUD. This is the key to focusing your attention and preventing your mind from wandering. Try to read it for 15-20 minutes. I like to read about 3 chapters in the morning and another 2 or 3 at night before going to sleep. However, once in awhile you run into a "super-chapter" that is double or triple length. Don't stress about it!
4. When you get to the end of the Gospel According to John, start over with Matthew again. Over time, I think you will discover yourself starting to put your faith in the very person of Jesus Christ instead of in the vague religious theories we all collect. You will find that there are great benefits to this, according to the words of Jesus himself.

But as we discuss in part two of our four-part series on "The Sound of Revolution in Modern Egypt," everyday sounds of the city are no less part of Egypt's political history. As our guest Ziad Fahmy explains, writing sonic history requires listening to the sources with ears attuned to the sentiments and sensibilities of past people. Together, we listen to a early recording of Egyptian street sounds and explore the world of sound that awaits within the textual record, focusing on how class dynamics played out on the soundscape of Cairo and Alexandria. We also consider how the rise of a new medium, radio, began to reshape the sonic life of ordinary Egyptians during the interwar period, paving the way for the media revolution of the 1950s and 60s.

Ziad Fahmy is a Professor of Modern Middle East History at Cornell University’s department of Near Eastern Studies. Professor Fahmy is the author of Street Sounds: Listening to Everyday Life in Modern Egypt (Stanford University Press, 2020). Street Sounds was a co-winner of the Urban History Association's 2021 Award for Best Book in Non-North American Urban History. He also wrote Ordinary Egyptians: Creating the Modern Nation through Popular Culture (Stanford University Press, 2011), and is currently writing his third book, tentatively titled, Broadcasting Identity: Radio and the Making of Modern Egypt, 1925-1952.
