Test subject 1.14 @consulateultra transmits a recording both mystifying and unsettling. A journey that on the surface, makes no logical sense; just an underlying feeling that something isn't quite right. But therein lies its beauty. Juxtaposing sounds and deranged blends are selected with complete precision to generate points of anticlimax and confusion. Embrace the obscure.

"I found it really challenging. It took me three attempts and a bunch of false starts before I was happy with the mix. At first, I saw rope bridges; Mesoamerican symbology; a jungle, but thought doing a jungle mix was a bit blunt. After staring at it for far too long and coming up with dozens of conflicting interpretations, I realised that ‘disorientation’ prevailed. To convey this, I included tracks and artists from disparate time periods and genres to achieve something I hope is disorienting while retaining some sense of cohesion. During lockdown I’ve gone through stages of listening to a lot of music and then listening to none at all. I have managed to consume a lot of books, films and games in the last few months, so I drew some factor of inspiration from those mediums - Carl Jung, John Carpenter, WB Yeats and Robert W. Chambers all feature in audio form, while various other cinematic or thematic influences definitely informed its general direction." Consulate on navigating the image for his Manifestation mix.

Recorded this in Eris Drew's studio in the cabin in New Hampshire she shares with her two partners, Maya and Q. They laid on the floor and listened as I played. I wanted a good mix of electronic deep listening, environmental sounds (field recordings) and non electronic deep listening. Because I was in NH, I had limited access to records and being that Eris only has turntables, no access to digital files, so it is true pastiche of whatever I could find as I packed for my trip east. I included some classic artists like Ariel Kalma, Pauline Oliveros and of course, Arthur Russell, alongside some more contemporary artists who really get me deep in my own brain while listening, such as Ahnnu and Gael Segalen. The transitions may be a bit rougher than I wanted but it's less about being a DJ mix and more about showing the different soundscapes in which we can lose ourselves in listening, if we let ourselves.

To celebrate, we have an hour of psychedelic weirdness from Seattle-based Dani Loose, best known as @havingsex , who has been an active part of the American Northwest DJ scene for the better half of the last seven years. Loose has developed a reputation for playing cerebral, hi-energy sets that scatter genres all across the board. Since moving to Seattle, Loose has become a highly visible and outspoken figure, bridging the gaps of the queer party scene and the mainstream techno world.

What was originally supposed to be a meticulous dubstep mix, ended up being an hour and a lil bit of of found sounds from Soulseek trance compilations and gems dug out of the bins in and around Seattle. Expect a little bit of everything from goa, to broken beat, to wonky midwest techno. It is pure dizzy time energy in the style of On Earth! 🤯
