Following their excellent Urgent Turquoise release for Om Recordings, the eclectic and ambitious San Francisco duo Tone of Arc have contributed their evocative sound to Roam Recordings’ second offering of 2016. Tone of Arc are comprised of Derrick Boyd (previously recording under the name Dead Seal) and Zoe Presnick … through well-received releases for the likes of No. 19 Music, Om Records, and Touch Of Class Records the pair have transmitted a series of moody electronic compositions that draw as much inspiration from cerebral post-punk gigs as sweaty, visceral dance floors. 

“Sundust” opens the single with its methodical tempo and haunting soundscapes, electrified by Derrick’s pensive words. The cut unfolds like a dream as layers of synths and vocal snippets build and vibrate throughout. “The Indigent” is a more stripped-down affair. A straight-forward four-on-the-floor rhythm, accented by big tom fills, creates the space for backwards pads and hinted melodies. It’s a mechanical meditation. Barcelona-based producer Lokier (HAKT, Days Of Being Wild) is also on hand for a haunting remix of “Sundust” that adds a commanding bass line and puts a spotlight on the vocal. Its steady forward motion is hypnotic in effect, intensifying the brain-to-feet aspect of Tone of Arc’s music.

Tone of Arc - Sundust

An artist of rare talent and scope, Gavin Griffin has accomplished a great deal through his GMJ production name. From Melbourne on the Australian south east coast, the GMJ name has risen impressively. With over a quarter century of production credits – alongside work for Balkan Connection, Vapour and Proton Music – Griffin's new work, lights up a path on the Particles highway as "Intimation" reveals another impressive landmark.

Revelling in a characteristically strong beat and ticking closed hat percussive line, a deep and rich bass line locks itself tightly to the developing groove. As it progresses, a chorus of gated pads make their presence felt while a collage of melodic sequences shimmer and sparkle across the upper frequency range. Pausing for a stripped back breakdown, the full rhythmic prowess of "Intimation" comes to the fore in the third movement in a work that epitomises the modern underground progressive paradigm.

Fellow countryman, Matty Doyle has similarly ridden an impressive career path via his Matter alter-ego. An artist constantly at the forefront of all that is good in the current underground scene, his work has consistently hit the headlines with a raft of original and remix material. Through a modus operandi based on "deep synth lines, driving bass and pulsating rhythms", Matter's work has continued to catch the attention of leading DJs and tastemakers that include Hernan Cattaneo, Eelke Kleijn and Umek. Growing both in demand and in body of work for the flagship, Proton Music imprint, Matter's collaborative work with GMJ found a centrepiece in the "Superordinate" EP. A single April 2016 remix of Lanvary for Particles is now followed by a typically impressive reworking of "Intimation". Taking GMJ's original by the proverbial scruff of the neck, Matter transforms it into a growling, groove-laden dance floor monster that combines rhythm and melody in perfectly symbiotic relationship. Using Griffin's original components to full effect, they are given a clever new treatment that sees the track drive relentlessly forward with dominant kick and pulsating pads. Delicious chord progressions provide moments of spine-tingling joy in a work of consummate skill.

From the historically poignant city of Gdansk, Polish producer, Tuxedo, has long been a friend of the Proton family and the Particles imprint. Owner of the successful, Electronic Tree, Tuxedo has been part of his country's club scene for over a decade, DJ'ing across the country and espousing his own sound and personal take on the underground dance scene via his monthly Proton Radio show. Unsurprisingly, Tuxedo's music has found its way on to a range of impressive labels that include behemoths, Silk Music, Balkan Connection and Colorize. A regular on the Particles imprint since a 2012 remix of Tvardovsky's "Love Code", 2013's three-rack "Destinations" EP forms the focal point for Tuxedo's work, supplemented by remixes of Erdi Irmak, and Igor Cold. Now returning to the label for the first time since August 2015, the Tuxedo remix of "Intimation" is a deep, stripped back affair that plays heavily on a strong beat and intricate percussive layers to provide a dynamic and hypnotic rhythmic sequence. Lavish pads spread out across the stereo spectrum in dramatic fashion as intelligent use of GMJ's original components, combined with Tuxedo's own production material, provide a new and powerful lead line that meanders through the eight-and-a-half-minute journey with delicate ease.

A brand new track, coupled with a pair of remixes from Matter and Tuxedo, have gone far beyond any "Intimation" that GMJ's music is anything other than a work of class and skill.

DP-6 is a music project founded in 2000 by Vadim Indigo and Alexey Filin. The duo's work is deeply influenced by the electronic scene of the 1990s, which has shaped their unique style and artistic vision. A turning point for DP-6 came in 2003 with the release of their debut vinyl record.

In addition to composing music, Vadim and Alexey are the founders of DP-6 Records, a label that not only releases their own tracks but also supports the talents of other artists. DP-6 is also known for their successful remixes released on various labels.

Over the years, DP-6 has performed at numerous vibrant events across a wide geographical range, including their own parties under the DP-6 Records brand.
