TAC#11: During the Fall

Featured in the Science Diction podcast episode "Ketchup."

I compose music for Science Diction, which is normally standard podcast background music. But we switched it up for this episode, which explored the origin of the word “ketchup.”

At the turn of the 20th century, many popular food additives weren’t safe (many contained poisonous preservatives like borax, salicylic acid, or formaldehyde).

So the U.S. Department of Agriculture formed a group called themselves the "Poison Squad," and they tested these food additives on themselves to see if they were safe to consume. Their testing led to better food safety standards, and Heinz, the ketchup manufacturer, was among the first to listen to the research. 

The squad were proud of their work, so, naturally, they wrote a song about themselves. Unfortunately, there aren't any surviving recordings, just the lyrics. The host of the show, Johanna Mayer asked me if I was down to take the lyrics and turn them into a vaudeville song. And she volunteered to sing!

I don’t usually write in this style, so I listened to a bunch of songs from the 20s and 30s and kept track of commonly used chord progressions. I have a piano that sounds like it belongs in Westworld, so it was a perfect for this genre.
