What has been the biggest challenge and more positive outcome you’ve experienced through extended time at home?

Being alone with my record collection and contemplating how different I am feeling, and considering which slabs of vinyl that I want to spend more time with. Rekindling relationships with certain sonic objects that are saturated with memories and have the power to transport me to a different space.

Thank you for the recording this mix for dublab – I know its been a while since you put a mix into the ether – can you speak about your process?

I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and wandered blindly into the void. This recording is a document of a moment in time, while smothered in an atmosphere that is as beautiful as it is ugly. The outcome is a true sonic image that is unmolested, unedited, and honest. An automatic drawing where one action responds to the next without any shadow of a doubt, and then preserved in its total form.

How did you approach the mix, did you have an idea in your mind of how it was going to go – or did you just trust your instinct?

Every time it is like traveling on autopilot with an empty mind that is prepared to accept the laws of chance while powered by an engine of chaos. I am a beacon rupturing from my life experiences. One light turns out, while another one flickers on. It is a very vehement ritual activity that depends on the action of call and response, while embracing the limitations that I set for myself by the tools that I choose to use. There is nothing but blind trust.

A lot of your art focuses on magic, ritual practice – but I would also say storytelling, a lot of the music in this mix, seems to spell some hidden meanings, can you go into any of those?

One of the strongest qualities of music, and all art in general is its subjective nature. Meanings can change continually through an endless scope of variables. The original intent of the artist can be transformed completely by the one that is digesting it. An important character of a successful work of art is its power to present open narratives shrouded in unlimited possibilities. And the closer and harder you look, the more questions will arise.

Although there were some technical difficulties with the USB sticks and he could not play his own music, Claude, like a true master, stepped up and went on to play a very special and rare all vinyl set using records from Nomadico, Force Placement and Kosmik, for over 2 hours!! We are honored and blessed to have hosted one our greatest heroes and favorite people on this entire planet.

We're at smartbar on Saturday for a show with Helena Hauff and local crew Hugo Ball. Check out their mix and read a Q+A with them below. 

1. How would you describe your music policy?

We think that mixing is a kind of psychedelic mischief with intense power, both of light and shadow. So each of us strives to reach a mediumistic state when DJing and to create a “super reality” on the dancefloor.  We've been using turntables for decades, so we play music off records. We are all obsessed with the notion that the objects themselves contain magic and energy.  At this point, techno is folk art, so turntablism is like our needlepoint. A lot of what we have learned over the years was passed down in Chicago as secret knowledge through oral tradition. We add to it through the incorporation of ideas from the visual arts, philosophy, and magic.  

2. What makes a great party?

When the party reaches a psychedelic magical peak, it is like the giddy moment in a science fiction film when the characters realize they are weightless because pens start floating in midair. At a great party these floating objects are not material; they consist of our memories, our traumas, and our sense of time. In this altered state life-long friendships are formed; hurt and anger are let go; the body presents itself and is purged; our connection to nature and the universe is manifest; the primordial rhythm reveals itself---the Mother Beat as we call it. 


3. What does your party stand for, and how do you express that? 

We are into the ecstatic rave experience because we need connection and it is downright thrilling. Humans have always danced to solidify our connections to each other and nature and to experience a kind of beautiful collective mania.  In the face of a dominant culture that is commodified, philosophically material, and disassociating, underground dance culture has more vitality than ever. 
Hugo Ball is a shared ritual, so we build our DJ booth from cinder blocks at each event. The placement of the booth on the dance floor unifies the space and emphasizes a shared ritual experience over the types of performances seen in many clubs today. 

4. What’s the greatest problem facing club culture in your city?
The combo of Chicago's restrictive regulatory environment, police, racism, transphobia and increasing rent.  You can’t go to a big underground rave before you are 21. The city is segregated, gentrifying and getting more expensive. A lot of trans people we know do not want to leave their houses let alone come to a nightclub. This is real for all trans people, but transmisogyny and racism combine to make things way harder on trans women of color. The clubs themselves are force caves, which project what people bring with them (good and bad) into the psychedelic dance space. 

5. What’s your favorite memory of the night?
We often like to reminisce about our recreation of the Oracle of Delphi last year using antique Victorian garden decorations and a fog machine—that was pretty cool! But we enjoy reliving some of our failures too. We spent weeks remaking Marcel Duchamp’s Rotoreliefs and mounting them to turntables on keyboard stands, only to have them fly off the mounts at the party. 
At our last event, we had a charity drive for the Night Ministry, a Chicago-based organization that works to provide housing, healthcare and connection to members of our community struggling with poverty. We successfully worked with management to change the bathroom policy. And we had one of our most beautiful installations yet, which was a complete veiling of the entire room in black, the DJ included.

Here we find the elusive Mike Servito in his natural habitat, closing No
Way Back in Detroit 2018, always one of the highlights of 313: Return to
the Source. It has become a sort of annual tradition to have him close
the party, as he balances the light with the dark in such an effortless
way. As he played “The Climax” I remember the feeling in the crowd, it
was magic. This set is directly after Derek Plaslaiko had finished playing
and an impromptu tag team ensued. This set presented here is Mike
Servito solo, killing it as he always does.

@ American DJ/remixer/producer Claude Young has been an important figure in electronic music since his beginnings in 1991, launching his studio career producing for Kevin Saunderson at the legendary KMS studio in Detroit. Few of his peers have been able to appeal to the tastes of both major and independent labels in the manner that he has, having recorded for Virgin, Astralwerks, Mo’wax and R&S records alongside smaller cult imprints such as studio K7, Harthouse and Scotland’ Soma recordings. He continues to be in great demand as a remixer for artists worldwide -previously the works of Gary Numan, Carl Craig, 4Hero, Sven Vath and Inner City have all been interpreted by him to great effect. Increasing work commitments prompted Claude’ move to London in 1997, after his talents were put to more diverse use when he was chosen to participate in producing original music for the Sony Playstation game ‘Ghost in the Shell’ along side Takkyu Ishino, Joey Beltram, The Advent and a host of techno music’ elite producers. Currently enjoying world wide recognition as one of the finest DJs on the scene, as well as launching his new record label Deta Recordings, Claude continues to show his ability to stay one step ahead of his contemporaries – a rare feat in today’ musical climate.
