Thanks to the 2012 Oscar-winning documentary ‘Searching For Sugarman’, the incredible tale of American recording artist Sixto ‘Jesús’ Rodriguez has been heard by millions of music fans worldwide.

Unheard of, forgotten, virtually ignored in the US, Rodriguez was revered and idolized in South Africa, where his censored ‘Cold Fact’ album became a political touchstone for thousands of South Africans fed up of apartheid and racial inequality in their country.

Themselves one of the most successful recording artists in South African history, live electronic band and MTV winners Goldfish have chosen to celebrate Rodriguez’ work ahead of their US tour by remixing ‘Sugar Man’ from ‘Cold Fact’. 

The pair’s reworking is as sensitive to the original subject as it is beautiful. For those fearing an EDM revamping, nothing could be further from the truth. The deep, dreamy remix is testament not only to Goldfish’s high-end production and composition skills, but also their close affinity to and understanding of the track. The hazy, heady, almost hallucinogenic spirit of Rodriguez’ ‘Sugar Man’ is still very much intact, in parts stripped down to a few lush piano chords, other times sweeping the listener up in a warm envelope of sound and emotion, Rodriguez’ haunting vocals guiding the single the entire time.

Dave Poole and Dominic Peters, who fly out to Rodriguez’ home country after their sold out ADE Special with Bakermat this Thursday, (available to view live on Be At TV here) spoke about why they decided to pay tribute to one of South Africa’s highest grossing artists.

“Going over to America as South Africans, it made sense to highlight the biggest connection for us between the two countries.” Poole said. “For any South African, Rodriguez is as legendary as they come and we all grew up knowing his music. He’s an icon.”

For decades, South African fans thought the folk singer had committed suicide. Wild rumours circulated varying from him shooting his brains out on stage, to setting himself on fire in front of a horrified audience. The truth, it turned out, was that the man ‘Cold Fact’ co-producer Mike Theodore deemed “better than Dylan” was working as a construction worker in Detroit. A curious and enigmatic figure, he had absolutely no idea of the impact or commercial success he’d enjoyed thousands of miles away on another continent. 

“It’s kind of crazy thinking about just how influential Rodriguez has been on generations of South Africans – including us,” Peters said, “and he never knew a thing about it. For us there was no better way to show our love and appreciation for a man that really was only about the music, than to put our twist on one of his greatest tracks. We hope people enjoy it and we hope that it introduces his music to a whole new audience in the process.”

Looney Moon Records' new series on radiOzora is kicking off with a special selection by label manager PHOBOS, paired with an audio-illustrated interview in The Ozorian Prophet.

LOONEY MOON – After promoting Trance parties in Italy for many years, the illustrious crew of Looney Moon eventually decided to spread the vibe of their events to an international audience. And which better way could have been chosen than doing this via music? So Looney Moon Records was founded in 2008, drawing on a collective of promising and varied artists from the very first day.

Concerning the music, the two label heads DJ Fog and DJ Phobos manage to realize a refreshing independent underground style. Based on a very sophisticated approach towards production quality, Looney Moon stands for highly energetic, kicking bass sounds and catchy synthesizer riffs, escalating to twisted sound structures and uplifting breaks and finally joining all the musical forces again in an intelligent, harmonic and melodic groove. This sound philosophy is currently represented on the new compilation “Looney Mood” that lives up to its name pretty much and therefore includes some seriously mad dance floor bangers.

PHOBOS – Since always into electronic music, in 1997 dj Phobos started listening to psy-trance, going to parties and festivals all around Europe. As a dj he has played in many parties and festival around the world together with lots of artists of international fame in the world of trance. From the point of view of his musical choice, he doesn’t like sticking to just one style of psy-trance, but he prefers to adapt his set to the hour, the people and the situation he finds himself in, taking always special care of the mixing. When playing during the night hours, he usually offers a Psychedelic Trance oriented style, with very psychedelic sounds which try not to degenerate into maddening noise or too dark influences; in the morning hour he will more likely choose to play more full-on underground stuff, trying to remain within the borders of psychedelics but with softer sounds, more suited for the light. Anyway he would rather play at dawn, according to him the most suitable moment of the day to enjoy his best sets. His djset is full of unreleased stuff .

He founded Looney Moon records with a group of friends in 2008, and he's still managing the label with dj Fog. Today Looney Moon Records is a very weel known music label with 5 killer compilations , 3 albums and lots of digital EP which bombed the dancefloors around the world.

For this release we were inspired by the concept of the “Soundsystem”, an important part of Jamaican culture, which changed and revolutionized the concept of music. The doctor stopped and stared. The horror that filled his eyes was enough to startle anybody in any situation. The height of this horror is a scene that places the doctor at the wide-open legs of a pregnant mother. His hesitating hands reaching forward to remove a baby the mother was sure was ready to come out.

She didn't hear the expected crying, but instead only a low gurgling sound filled the room. The doctor shook his head, as if waking from a nightmare, then reached out and took hold of the unseen infant.

"Doctor? What's the matter?" a nurse asked as she approached the bed. She peaked around at the baby. "Don't worry ma'am, all is fine."

The mother stared with unblinking eyes at the nurse as she looked at the doctor and finally the small creature that he held in shaking hands. The nurse's jaw dropped down and her eyes clouded over. In a moment, she was on the ground and the mother was screaming.

The doctor stood and revealed the child cradled in his arms. A monster writhed within the scratched and bloodied arms of the terrified physician. It was larger then a one year old child, its skin like a reptile's, both scaly and rough. Sharp horns jetted out of its head on either side and a thin, long object swayed in the air, the tip shaped like a two-pronged fork, swayed about the infants head.

Her son, she thought, I love him no matter what he is or becomes. The child seemed to look right into her soul with its glowing red eyes.
