Dr. Edward Thalheimer discovered his passion for tutoring early in life. While attending the University of California at San Diego, he excelled in team sports, particularly basketball, and balanced his time between academics and what he hoped would be a promising athletic career. When the chance arose to tutor fellow students in math for full class credit, Edward eagerly signed up.

Reflecting on that experience, Dr. Thalheimer recognizes the invaluable insights and techniques he gained, which continue to influence his approach today. However, it wasn't until later that he realized he wanted to pursue a career in education. He observed a widespread need for educational support, even at prestigious institutions like Dartmouth College. Utilizing the skills he honed at UC San Diego, Edward helped his roommate improve his grades and develop effective study methods.

Despite his natural aptitude for teaching, Dr. Thalheimer felt a compelling desire to serve in the United States Navy, aspiring to become a Nuclear Power Naval Officer in the Submarine Force. He embraced this challenge, starting as a Nuclear Power Officer and completing four years of service with distinction. Afterward, he faced uncertainty about his next steps.

Fate intervened when Dr. Thalheimer met a prominent geneticist researching neurological disorders, including ADD and ADHD. This encounter deepened his understanding of these complexities and how to effectively teach individuals diagnosed with such conditions.
Inspired, Dr. Thalheimer envisioned The Tutoring Center, driven by his desire to create a supportive learning environment. While working as an educator at a private school, he gained further experience for this venture.

In 1994, he took a leap of faith, founding one of the most successful after-school educational companies in the United States. As of 2019, The Tutoring Center neared 200 franchise locations, maintaining one of the industry’s lowest center-closing rates for over a decade.
