Marie-Julie is a vinyl-only DJ hailing from the Belgian town of Ghent. An avid record collector from early on, she fostered a passion for genres like house, electro and techno, as well as for the medium itself. Her deliberate choice of toolkit speaks to vinyl’s chronicling quality, introducing a set of parameters that encourage careful choice and a well developed narrative arc. The beginnings of that story more broadly include as common trope a formative year in Berlin, where a deep-dive into musical culture helped her scaffold a vision that’s now coming into sharp focus. Back in her homeland, she’s gained traction as a frequent selector at the legendary Fuse and a number of other venues, and abroad you might find her at Tresor or Paris’ Spectrum Waves party. Combining deep organic grooves and immersive ambient textures, Marie-Julie is a master of tension and slow build techno. Rhythmic complexity, meticulous pacing and a keen awareness of her crowd’s dynamics have become her go-to and the world is paying attention. Bassiani Podcast 292 is an exercise in percussive storytelling that confidently swells, rising and falling somewhere between suspense and release, a two-hour vinyl studio mix primed with the clubfloor in mind.
