"the whole time i was writing this piece the snow just never stopped falling so i had this amazing visual flow that inspired me to keep on throwing musical ideas into the track. i had no intention to venture outside so i just kept on recording for two days, mixing as i went along, until the snow stopped. i added recordings of me clearing snow and ice from my doorstep whilst my heater was working flat out to push the sub zero temperatures up a few degrees. i see 'nivalis' as a tribute to the winter, the snow and the beauty of how the seasons change here in england." — simon scott

Ken Smith (1938-2003) was a major voice in world poetry, his work and example inspiring a whole generation of younger British poets. Ken Smith’s poetry shifted territory with time, from rural Yorkshire, America and London to the war-ravaged Balkans and Eastern Europe (before and after Communism). His early books span a transition from a preoccupation with land and myth to his later engagement with urban Britain and the politics of radical disaffection, that shift marked by his long poem about alienation in London, 'Fox Running' (1980). His Collected Poems was published by Bloodaxe Books in 2018. This recording of Ken Smith reading the whole of 'Fox Running' is from a cassette recording he made himself. A slightly shorter version was broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Poetry Please - taking up a whole programme - in 2016.

'The Virtues,' starring BAFTA-nominated Stephen Graham (This is England, ’86, ’88, ’90, Boardwalk Empire, Taboo, Line of Duty) alongside Irish actors Helen Behan and Niamh Algar, tackles themes of repressed memory, apocalyptic revenge and the hope of redemption.

BECOMING PLANT is the second episode in a series of one hour radio essays commissioned by Soundart Radio as part of Tomorrow's Transmissions. This series weaves poetry, nonfiction, theory, soundart and performance together in a shamanistic effort to become other (fungus, plant, insect, bird and animal) in order to better become our selves.

As government responses to coronavirus shuts human activity down, the rest of the world thrives. Unmown verges flower and seed, animals move into urban centres, air and water clears, bird and fish populations recover. Each episode suggests a more sustainable way of becoming human, inspired by what it means to be fungus, insect, plant, bird and animal, respectively. Might the incorporation of these other-than human strategies help us better work with rather than against the rest of life on earth and help mitigate climate crisis?
