The plane tilts slightly, and through the oval window, dawn spills across the wing like melted glass. Wish presses her forehead against the cool plastic, watching the clouds break apart to reveal a coastline that feels like a half-remembered dream.

It’s been four years, but in her mind it’s still the same-the quiet backstreets, the gray light over rooftops, the smell of wet asphalt after rain. Except now, as the engines hum lower and the seatbelt light blinks on, the view below glows too brightly. The highways look cleaner. The buildings sharper, newer, taller. The glow scrawls it's spells across the skyline like an electric circuit-alive, restless, unapologetically modern.

Was it always this bright?

Wish closes her eyes. The hum of the cabin turns to a low roar inside her head. Her reflection stares back at her from the window-older, harder, hair shorter, eyes rimmed in exhaustion. She thinks of the last time she saw this country: her new parents thought they were saving her, but she could only feel numb as she watched her old life shrinking away from a different plane window, so many years ago.

Now she’s returning, not for a new beginning, but for a burial.

Her hands twist in her lap. She’s not sure what she’s supposed to feel. Her mother’s name still sounds heavy in her mouth. People in Australia had said she was lucky to get away, to start over-but leaving never felt like escaping. It felt like exile.

The captain’s voice crackles overhead in her mother tongue first, and then in English. “We’ll be landing shortly at Incheon International Airport. Local time is 5:47 a.m.”

The words strike something deep inside her. Incheon. It’s not just an airport-it’s the edge of the past, waiting to see if she’ll cross it.

Wish looks out again. The sea glitters, a soft, endless mirror. For a second, it feels like she’s floating between two worlds-one that forgot her, and one that she never stopped carrying.

As the plane dips lower, the lights of the runway rise to meet her, and her throat tightens. The city is awake already, burning gold against the dark water, but then, this is a city that never sleeps...
