A catalyst for the creation of Ed Steele’s recent productions has been the Noisily Festival in Leicestershire, UK. Following a headline slot by D-Nox at the festival in 2018, Steele sent his latest production, “Your Move” to the Sprout Music boss and a partnership was forged. The track landed on the label’s Passion, Vol. 2 compilation in late 2019 and less than a year later Steele returns to Sprout with his Killing Time debut album. 

Like so many music festivals, Noisily was hit hard due to the Covid-19 epidemic and was forced to cancel its 2020 events. As a means to raise funds for the 2021 edition, Noisily set up a crowd funding page and offered a DJ set at the event for a £300 donation. As a birthday present, Steele’s friends chipped in and bought him the slot at Noisily’s 2021 festivities. That inspiration essentially kicked the Killing Time album into gear as Steele explains, “Every time I sat down to make a track, I had the idea of DJing on the Noisily stage in my mind.”

Like so many musicians- and artists in general- creative time for Steele had been limited to the off hours while holding down a job and raising a family. However, with the lockdown in effect everything changed.  He says “Music time is usually late nights and early mornings, but with no work I was able to make music 12 hours a day, a few days a week, for a few months. This opportunity… allowed me to really delve deeper into making music and briefly it felt like my day job, which was a magical feeling. The name Killing Time is in fact totally ironic since I haven’t had time to kill for years.”

With inspiration coming from the likes of John Monkman and Kasper Koman, the Killing Time material came together over a fruitful three month period which also saw the creation of collaborative remix with Serge Lander arriving on the Balkan Connection label at the end of the month. With Steele’s work picking back up again, that window of uninterrupted creative expression may be closing. As the title of his haunting “Savour the Moment” production is a reflection of that time, it also serves as a reminder to appreciate the present since “Too soon after achieving a goal we tend to create new ones.”

The little witch woke up in the middle of the night, while the whole forest was still in a state of deep sleep.  This was very unusual as the girl is generally a very good sleeper.  She quickly realized the following night there would be a full moon, which meant she’ll participate in the monthly witch coven.  Her deeper instinct told her it was time to wake up and start flying, just following her inner compass.  She rarely flies at night and she knew this meant her destination would be far away.  Judging the position of the pole star, she knew she was flying towards the Northeast.  After witnessing a glorious sunrise over the Kattegat sea strait, she flew over a vast green country with big forests and lakes.  It was only at that point that the girl realized she was leaving a red smoke trail behind.  Just at that moment she saw a blue vapor trail in the distance, coming straight from the North.  That could only be another witch.  Both witches touched down gently at exactly the same moment, in a clearing at the side of a little lake in the middle of a vast pine forest, where a 500 year-old witch was waiting for them with a smile.  The witch from the North turned out to be a young woman with long blond hair, wearing a light blue dress.  Strangely, the women were unable to do their customary group hug as both young witches were surrounded by a strong energy field.  So they kept their distance while slipping out of their clothes and enjoying a refreshing bath in the ice cold water of the lake.
After that, the girls found out a 5 meter gap was the closest they could get before their energy fields would collide again, pushing them back to a safe distance.  Meanwhile, the elder witch had prepared some magic ink in a cauldron, and with an owl’s feather she drew a mystic symbol on the feet of the little witch.  After drying out, the ink changed its color to an intensely warm shade of red.  Meanwhile, the elder witch drew the same symbol on the feet of the Nordic witch and – despite using the same ink – the color changed magically into an intensely cool shade of blue.  She repeated this process until the bodies of both young witches were covered from top to toe under a great number of mystic symbols, all with the same red color on the skin of the little witch from the South, and a blue color on the blond witch from the North.  At that moment, the 500-year old witch encouraged the 2 youngsters to come closer to each other.  The little witch sensed that the energy field was still present, but didn’t block her anymore.  And while she slowly approached the Scandinavian witch, the symbols on her skin started to emit an intense red glow, while the symbols on the other girl emitted an electrifying blue glow.  The glowing became stronger and stronger as they came closer to each other and on top of that, a forceful wind started to blow around them, sending a deafening roar through the trees while the 2 witches were in the middle of this vortex.  And when they finally touched each other, a snow blizzard erupted while a blazing sun was shining on their naked skin at the same time.  The two interlocked witches started to whirl around inside the vortex… the little witch felt so united with the blonde witch, that their bodies seemed to merge, until all of a sudden the wind abated and the snow blizzard had gone while both witches loosened the grip on each other.  To her amazement, the little witch saw that the symbols on the other witch had a mesmerizing purple glow now, after which she realized the symbols on her own skin had exactly the same color.  After that, they once again gave a tender hug to each other, but this time there was no tension and everything was in harmony.  They both couldn’t figure out what had happened, but this just felt so good …

'Killing Time' is a sci-fi inspired bleepy melodic winner, with hints to yesteryear, yet sounding fresh and cutting edge. Big and bold!

Rounding off this sampler, we have 'Aimless. This subtle gem treats us to wonderful key changes, where darkness meets light, as an air of sophistication lingers in the air. A sold dance floor winner.

That morning, the little witch woke up from the pleasant sound of the singing birds in her forest.  With her eyes half-open and still feeling drowsy from a good night’s sleep, her heart suddenly skipped a beat from excitement when she realized the next night there would be a full moon, which meant she’ll participate in the monthly witch coven (which always happens in a different location and in the ever-changing company of two other witches).  
After finishing her morning rituals and her daily inspection round the woods, the girl said goodbye to the forest dwellers, and flew into the unknown.  She knew she would – as always - reach her destination by simply following her inner compass.  To her surprise, she was flying straight to the North … a direction she had followed never before.  After a long flight over the North Sea (which she saw for the very first time), she finally saw land in the distance.  As she came closer, she discerned a spectacular coastline with fjords and rugged mountains.  At one particular moment, her inner compass told her to turn right and fly into a majestic fjord where she flew straight to the top of a steep rock, where she was welcomed by two other women : an old witch from the land of the fjords and a middle aged witch (around 150 years old) who came all the way from the Carpathian Mountains.  The three women looked at a breathtaking sunset from their majestic vantage point high above the fjord.  Soon the night fell and the young witch was spellbound by all the twinkling stars in the sky.  She had never seen such bright stars and they seemed to be unbelievably close.  To her amazement a constellation of eight stars slowly descended towards them and soon the eight stars were right in the middle of the three witches, gently floating at eye level.  The little witch had never before felt so connected with the universe and the stars.  After a while the three witches started to float in the air and gently soared upwards accompanied by the eight stars until they were surrounded by millions of stars.  The young witch felt a strong connection with her two sisters witch and with the eight stars, and she became so energized by all this that she started to glow.  The heat in her heart became so intense that she looked down and to her amazement she saw a little pinkish light jump out of her chest, beating at the pace of her own heart.  Strangely the same thing happened with the two other witches, and their little stars had a blue and yellow glow.  The three newborn stars searched their place and settled down in their new galaxy, twinkling at exactly the same rhythm as the heartbeats of the three witches.
After that, the little witch gradually lost all sense of space and time and when she returned to planet earth in the company of her sisters witch, she was unable to tell whether this experience lasted just minutes or decades or even billions of years.  The women touched down on the same mountain top looking down over the fjord. And the little witch immediately gazed at the sky, just in time to spot a beautiful 11-star constellation (including a pinkish, a yellowish and a blueish star) slowly fading away as the night made place for yet another glorious day …

DJ Unique debuts for Solarii with the Seashell EP. Remix support comes from Rauschhaus and D-Nox & Ed Steele. Breaking back in 2016, DJ Unique has built a solid career over the last 4 years. A capable producer with a wide musical spectrum, DJ Unique is dropping his first EP "Seashell. 'Seashell' leaps from the speakers from the first bar. Emotive and energetic, its Afro roots locked in with more progressive tribal rhythms. Melodics throughout lift the track away from the linear adding melancholy feels, toughening up in the second half. On remix duties, German House king, Rauschhaus, add his Teutonic charms stripping back the tribal percussions and focusing on the emotive elements to great effect. 'Impala' on the flipside sees DJ Unique explore his deeper house tendencies. Delicate keys and pads as a rubbery bassline carries the main weight. Chunky and chuggy, this is a perfect mid-set cooler full of strong sound design ideas and warm vibes. D-Nox and Ed Steele take their remix in that direction, smoothing out the groove and introducing a devilish Reese bass.
