[ZF] BREAKFAST BURRITO MIX [3.24.2024]

this was written today as a study in Ab, on the app DroneToneTool that uses cello sounds to tune to. in more recent times, i like to test myself by going about my day after figuring an idea out. if i can still remember the idea later on when i get to the piano, or if it still feels good to play said idea, that’s how i know it’s one to hang on to. 

when i tried to translate this one on the Fender Rhodes, it reminded me of something i’ve always admired: wind chimes. we never had them at my home growing up but i would be blessed to hear them in neighbors’ yards, hanging on trees or other fixtures. i think wind chimes are an amazing thing because they just allow nature to interact with them and make music. even more as i write this i’m stuck on the fact that we can literally hear what the air on earth feels like playing …through wind chimes!!!

it’s crazy.

a further inspiration during this time for me has been Esperanza Spalding’s incredibly healing album SONGWRIGHTS APOTHECARY LAB where the core question attempted to be answered through the project was, “what do you need a song for?” — written during the pandemic lockdown, it was apparent that the so-called ‘intangible’ things, like music, needed a further look: one for us to see that art, spirituality, and the like, are actually extremely, or if you can believe, infinitely tangible. they affect us very deeply so our relationship to them is delicate, sacred, and important. what becomes oppressive, violent noise or soothing, therapeutic vibration is our choice when we engage with it. 

it was from listening to this album and many similar to it, and finishing my own latest work (THE LOOP EVOLVES) that i have (re)discovered better purposes with creating and playing music. there are still harsh sounds that we make. there are still discrepancies within our spirits we wish to resolve. but as Cee-Lo said on the song “Fighting”, we gotta do it together. we have to listen and pay attention to the lesson the wind is teaching us when it plays those chimes. it’s far greater than i can attempt to describe in an essay. but the fact we have ears to hear it, bodies at least to feel that vibration, is a blessing enough.

The idea was to create a tape entirely using Koala Sampler including the mix. 90% were made on the iphone was please excuse the levels lol.
