In Hour 2, Ollie Teeba from The Herbaliser and Soundsci gives us his own take on 'War of the Worlds' for the Solid Steel 25th Anniversary. here in his own words;

'When I was 8 or 9 years old I heard Jeff Wayne's musical version of H.G.Well's 'War Of the Worlds' for the first time. It scared the pants off me. For years afterwards I listened to the record over and over. It is certainly one of the things from my childhood that cemented my interest in film scores. Though not a film score per se. Its marriage of rock music with orchestral arrangements to tell a story, had me transfixed. The combination of funky rock with sinister string parts would heavily influence and partially shape the sounds that, years later Jake Wherry and I would be making in The Herbaliser. 

A few years back I was given, as a Christmas gift, the 'Collectors Edition box set of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds'. As well as tons of interesting facts about the creation of the original recordings it had several CD's of alternate takes, remixes etc. On one CD, I excitedly discovered that they had included all of Richard Burton's dialogue parts, without music. Having already created and performed an alternate live DJ score to silent film 'The Lost World' from 1927, this seemed like a great opportunity to do a similar project with one of my favourite childhood stories.

Using records from my own collection of movie soundtracks and other suitable material, I created the original version. This was given to some close friends as a christmas present in 2010. The version you are now hearing is a somewhat revised and extended version, created specifically for the 25 years of Solid Steel. Also, it is the 75th anniversary of Orson Welles' infamous radio play, that when broadcast on Halloween 1938, had many Americans convinced that they were listening to a genuine attack from outer space. This is by no means intended as an improvement to Mr Wayne's recording but a tribute to H.G Wells, Jeff Wayne, Richard Burton, Orson Welles and of course Solid Steel.

DJ Food 'Children of the Sun' Farmfest Mix 2014

Here's a vinyl mix I just made yesterday featuring 90's IDM mixed with newer electro and similar style tracks over the last 10 years or so.  Record used for some transitions is a Moon Landing record One of the few records that the more scratched up and damaged it is the better it sounds!. 99 percent sure that the USA never went to the moon! Back in Autumn 1994 i stayed with my sisters in London whilst i did some work experience at one of their businesses. I remember tuning into the Kiss FM jungle show (Jumping Jack Frost) one evening and in their flat i also found some old tapes that belonged to one of my sisters boyfriends who i believe was involved in running Sunday Roast. There were a couple of Touchdown FM tapes from 1992/1993 which unfortunately became unplayable before i could get them ripped years later and this private mixtape from DJ Dezire and Andrew. No idea who these DJ's were and can only assume they were friends of the Sunday Roast guy. Both sides are super tight and packed full of big tunes and more under the radar stuff.

To coincide with the launch of the documentary celebrating the history of the legendary Mo' Wax Records, we asked one of our favourite Montreal DJs, Phil Larochelle, to dive into the back catalogue and record a session consisting of his all-time favourites. 

The imprint founded in 1992 by James Lavelle was home to the some of the forward-thinking genre-defying beats. From DJ Krush to DJ Shadow, Motorbass to Unkle, the label was a melting-pot of Jazz, Hip Hop, Breaks, Trip Hop, Electronica and whatever else artists felt like putting on a slice of wax.

However my main obsessive focus lies mainly into old school electro and underground futuristic new school electro (Morphology, ERP, Versalife, Kan3da, Plant 43, 214, Analogical Force, CPU, AS1, Umwelt, AC records, Microlith, Armec, Sound Synthesis, Biochip, Illektrolab , Info, Lake Haze and many more), underground acid house (JTC - The Dancing Box and Creep Acid, 808 State Newbuild are some of my favorites), razor blade edits, Moog records, perverted comedy records, Bleeps and Breaks, 90-92 Hardcore techno and early rave tracks, smooth and sleek Detroit Style techno, electronic sound effect and obscure spoken word records and electronic listening music from the beginning to now..

As has been said by many others before, "There are 2 types of music, good music and bad music".

I have about 100 of my own tracks to finish, some are already done, some just need some fine tuning. I am going to use this channel mainly for Dj Mixes with a few of my own tracks on here as well.  Eventually they will get on my BandCamp, or even better, hopefully I will get something released on vinyl.
