Drift x Midnight Bass // Mix Series

Initially formed out of a desire to step back from the intensity of peak-time club spaces, the Edinburgh-based music project DRIFT has enjoyed 5 wonderfully relaxed years, during which they've curated some truly memorable listening bar events across the UK. In order to celebrate the special milestone, they've asked 12 producers and artists previously involved with DRIFT in one way or another to contribute something in their own style for a very special compilation album entitled "5 Years of DRIFT". Releasing fully on the 15th March, the release showcases a range of genres from spoken word and ambient, through jazz and neo-soul to experimental club and dreamy, distant jungle. The release will be available in physical format as bespoke, made-to-order lathe cuts with the sleeves featuring prints of the amazing hand-drawn artwork by Edinburgh based artist Ana Geissler and limited run DRIFT t-shirts.

This project showcases some of the very best in new music coming out of DRIFT's hometown of Edinburgh, as well as some contributions from further afield. There's honestly something in here for everyone, and with 100% of the sales going to the artists, any purchases directly support a blossoming music scene! Much love x

[Melodic Distraction Radio] DRIFT with Mystery Season - September 2021

DRIFT returns with the 32nd episode from Berlin-based Loft Garten. As co-founder of the exciting new experimental label NIA Records, they find themselves situated at the centre of the fast-paced electronic music scene in the German capital and, alongside co-founders Collo and Delfine, have come up with one of my favourite releases of the year so far. Intentions Vol 1 is a compilation of experimental tracks filled with echoing hyper-melancholia, fragmented orchestral pieces and yearning ambient alongside the occasional scattered and wapred club sound. I have used multiple songs from this release in my own mixes and radio shows, including Loft Garten's own track let's meet by the canal. It's with great pleasure that I welcome them to the series for DRIFT 032!

The mix is a sublime blend of experimental tracks with wistful, textured ambient seamlessly transitioning into distant percusive elements, a variety of sounds which paint an overall picture of longing and time away. It features many of my favourite artists and is a nod to all those who have been pushing the experimental exlectronic scene into uncharted waters over the past few years!

DRIFT 032: Loft Garten

As we move further into Summer, the good vibes of the DRIFT x Midnight Bass collaborative series continue where they left off last week with a dreamy, hour-long submission for episode number two. Stepping up to the decks, we’re proud to welcome Edinburgh based DJ Pollyanna, who presents an hour long foray into fast-paced yet laid-back DnB, hip-hop vocals, RnB influenced liquid and much more. As the founder of the Sunday Service at Edinburgh’s Doghouse pub, she is no stranger to the lighter side of breaks, jungle and DnB, and the monthly party has gone from strength to strength, giving local DJs a chance to explore the easy-listening side of the genre in a live setting. It was, therefore, a no brainer to get her involved here, and she’s proved us right with a seriously enjoyable mix tinged with jazzy loops, chilled-out MCs and basslines that will have you nodding your head the whole way through!

Drift x Midnight Bass: Episode Two w/ Pollyanna (Edinburgh)

Up next in the series, we travel up to the west of Scotland for a contribution from Glasgow based Amber Leith. Starting full of raw amen breaks chopped, layered and expertly stitched together, his mix combines chilled out jungle beats with a background of jazzy notes, dub echoes and distant, spacey pads. Never getting stale or settling into one drum pattern for too long, Amber Leith creates a truly otherworldly listening experience of fast paced yet relaxed breakbeat music. 

As it moves through pulsating low end basslines from chilled liquid DnB to dreamy vocal samples, his mix makes us want to crank it up on a late night drive or at home on a good hifi setup. A truly unique and expertly crafted selection of songs from a DJ at the top of his craft, don't miss out on this one!

Drift x Midnight Bass: Episode Four w/ Amber Leith (Glasgow)

After a long hiatus, a few side projects and a full cover redesign, we finally return to the DRIFT mix series for episode 34. This one's a special one, with Edinburgh-based rising producer, record cutter and DJ 'The Last Days of Pompeii' taking control. Entitled 'Sound in Motion', he creates a vibrant collage of his favourite soundtrack, soundscapes, monologues and dialogues from cinema and television. With genres spanning ambient, modern classical and with the occasional indie throw back the mix reimagines soundtrack scores and movie scenes. Included below is the track/watch list which I encourage you to check out and do some further watching/listening. The Last Days of Pompeii's deep knowledge of film and visual media comes through as he blends memorable title sequences and deep cuts from foreign films with excerpts and monologues to create a truly immersive one hour listening experience. Continuing the DRIFT series in style, episode 36 comes in hot in the form of a longer form mix from Gary. Well versed in blending bass heavy club tracks, he takes a step back to share some of his favourite chilled tracks with us over the course of 90 minutes. During this time, he steers through a truly varied range of music spanning the downtempo range, from blissful electronica, through hip hop instrumentals and vocals, to percussive and emotive tracks from all corners of the globe. Drift x Midnight Bass: Episode Nine w/ HEX (Glasgow)

For episode 37, we're delighted to shine the spotlight on talented, Northampton-based DJ, Moose. With residencies on London stations Mode and Voices, he regularly fills the airwaves with forward thinking and exciting uk club sounds, focussing on leftfield music from garage to jungle. Alongside this, he is a skilled producer and boasts a string of excellent releases over the last few years including recent gems on labels Solitude and Profound Sound. 

Stepping back slightly from his usual style for this mix, he sticks to the genres he knows well but explores the more chilled out end of the spectrum, with choice selections from artists such as Om Unit and Yoofee. His aim for his contribution to the series was to touch on a Sunday afternoon feeling, using tunes he’s always had but never found an opportunity to play through normal channels such as club and radio. In his own words, not getting to play them as much genuinely improved the mix as it was a lot more fun to mix & was super excited putting the tracklist together, being something different to scheduled programming. This perfectly mirrors the DRIFT philosophy and we're absolutely delighted to be able to share it with you on a Sunday afternoon!

Initially formed out of a desire to step back from the intensity of peak-time club spaces, the DRIFT project has enjoyed 5 wonderfully relaxed years, during which they've curated some truly memorable listening bar events across the UK. In order to celebrate the special milestone, they've asked 12 producers and artists previously involved with DRIFT in one way or another to contribute something in their own style for a very special compilation album entitled "5 Years of DRIFT". Releasing fully on the 15th March, the release showcases a range of genres from spoken word and ambient, through jazz and neo-soul to experimental club and dreamy, distant jungle. The release will be available in physical format as bespoke, made-to-order lathe cuts featuring prints of the amazing hand-drawn artwork by Edinburgh based artist Ana Geissler and limited run DRIFT t-shirts.

Sempra's contribution is a lush vocal jungle cut, showcasing the sound the Bristol producer has worked hard to curate during a prolific last few years which has seen him release chilled-out tracks across the tempo range. Perfect for closing out your sets or for rinsing out at sunset while chilling on a beach, the breaky track should give a taste of what else is to come on the compilation! Edinburgh party series & label DRIFT celebrates 5 years in operation with a very special 12 track compilation.

Initially formed out of a desire to step back from the intensity of peak-time club spaces, the Edinburgh-based music project DRIFT has enjoyed 5 wonderfully relaxed years, during which they've curated some truly memorable listening bar events across the UK. In order to celebrate the special milestone, they've asked 12 producers and artists previously involved with DRIFT in one way or another to contribute something in their own style for a very special compilation album entitled "5 Years of DRIFT". 

Our featured premiere comes from the alter-ego of Shetland-born, Malmo-based producer Bolam, Timo Torben. An artist focusing on captivating, textured sounds as he explores experimental breaks, dreamy soundscapes and organic, downtempo percussion. 

'Where Do We Go From Here' beautifully evolves from revereating ambient textures and spacey synths into wonderfully hypnotic downtempo breakbeat. Showcasing the very best of a range of genres in a single track and highlighting the producer's ability to create psychedelic electronic music of the highest calibre.

Releasing fully on the 15th March, the release showcases a range of genres from spoken word and ambient, through jazz and neo-soul to experimental club and dreamy, distant jungle.

Miri Malek is a Fife-born, Scottish-Iranian DJ & Producer playing a powerful blend of low-end influenced selections, with a focus on stranger textures and dark, percussive grooves. They are the founder of Dwam, a Berlin-based interdisciplinary platform running events and arts residencies.

For their DRIFT mix, Miri Malek expertly threads together deep, pulsating leftfield cuts with mutated dancehall and ethereal downtempo to create a seamless mix of experimental electronic sounds. They had this to say about it:

For mix number 13, Drift is delighted to welcome Disco outfit All Night Passion. 2020 marks 6 years for the Aberdeen based promoters, who have consistently put on high quality nights across the funk, soul and disco spectrum in esteemed venues such as The Tunnels, Sub Club and The Mash House. The calibre of their guests has been outstanding with noteable names including Jamie 3:26, Optimo, CC:Disco and Horse Meat Disco. In addition to this, they recently made the trip across to Berlin to play at the legendary Griessmuehle. Over the years, All Night Passion have acquired a wealth of knowledge in all things groovy, never failing to keep dancefloors moving.

For this mix, they aim to reflect something you might hear at the very start of one of their nights - deep cuts and rare grooves to warm up a dancefloor before the funkier tunes later on. The hour meanders through a wonderful selection of tracks with a delicious helping of soulful vocals, warm basslines and funky synths. All Night Passion have taken the Drift idea in a totally new direction, different from anything we've heard before and they've absolutely nailed it. Bringing more obscure tracks from well known artists as well as a couple of classics, this isn't one to be missed. Sit back and let them take you on a journey through disco, love and magic...

DRIFT 013: All Night Passion

As lockdown continues into its third week, we’re delighted to bring a welcome distraction in the form of DRIFT 016 by Frazer Ray (FKA Soundbwoy Killah). Having gone from strength to strength in recent years, he was due to appear in Edinburgh at The Mash House with Artiisan last month. Unfortunately, the event did not go ahead and everyone involved was understandably gutted! Don’t worry, however, as we have a 60 minute mix from the man himself to tide you over until the event is rescheduled.

The London based DJ’s style envelopes everything the UK scene has to offer and his releases vary from garage and house right through to breakneck jungle. This is especially apparent on his stellar album Halcyon Daze which came out on Sneaker Social Club last year. Other outstanding works include his Tell Me EP (Warehouse Rave) which propelled him into a small group of producers at the forefront of the UK breaks scene. In addition to all this, he holds a residency at Rinse FM. His show has had some outstanding guests such as Interplanetary Criminal, Breaka and L U C Y with his most recent show consisting of 2 hours of his own unreleased music. Well worth checking out!

For his DRIFT mix, Frazer brings a wonderful collection of the more chill end of the UK spectrum. Filled with floaty breaks, trippy 2 step beats and atmospheric vibes, it is ideal listening during isolation. Stick it on and drift away for 60 minutes!

DRIFT 016: Frazer Ray

Increased time inside means an increase in the number of DRIFT mixes coming your way. Episode 17 comes from Edinburgh based DJ, Dansa. As part of the Palidrone collective, he has helped to bring some outstanding guests to Edinburgh over the last few years with some of the biggest names in the scene playing for them. Most recently, they brought electro legend DJ Stingray to the Mash House alongside firm favourite Solid Blake! As part of Artiisan, I was buzzing to be asked to play on the bar in support of this event so it only seemed right to get Dan on the series!

Throughout this hour, he delves deep into the outer reaches of electronic music bringing some truly unique and wonderful sounds. Deep, experimental tracks flow into each other seamlessly with sparse yet effective breaks, bleeps and percussion keeping the mix constantly exciting. Eerie melodies and futuristic vocals are woven into many of the songs and transport the listener to a different plane of existence. A brilliantly original and unique take on the drift idea!

DRIFT 017: Dansa

Next up in the DRIFT series is Hiba. Originally from Beirut, she now resides in Edinburgh where she helps to produce and run the community based station EH-FM. In addition to this, she holds a residency on the station which goes by the name of Soulful Aswaat and explores the rich musical culture coming out of the Middle East. Most recently she put together a fantastic show for Radio Hammam highlighting a brilliant variety of music produced by or featuring women from the Middle East and North Africa!

In this mix, Hiba takes a different direction and provides an hour of guitar tracks and relaxed soulful RnB. Sounding both nostalgic and refreshing at the same time, the mix brings some welcome warmth into the DRIFT series. Expect tracks from Radiohead and Heart in amongst some deeper cuts during this hour of relaxing tunes!

DRIFT 018: Hiba

The 19th iteration in the DRIFT series has been put together by the extremely talented ona:v of EPiKA Edinburgh. She has a ridiculously impressive output rate with a wide array of streams, mixes and radio shows being released fresh each week. ona:v is part of the Sisu roster and holds down two radio show residencies (on EH-FM as Circle and Fnoob Techno Radio as ReView). On top of all this, she is also the founding member of the Edinburgh based all female DJ collective. If you have the chance to catch her playing in a club (or to tune into her streams) expect high-energy electro tracks in her sets, as well as a bit of nostalgic early-2000s rave anthems, all mixed with high-bpm techno.

For this mix she takes a step back from her usual high-intensity sound to bring a wonderful selection reminiscent of a festival stage closing on the final night when there is hardly anyone left and the sound moves into and ethereal trippy dimension. Slower electro and deep bassey sounds fill this hour and although it may sound slightly on the clubby side for DRIFT, she has selected tracks which are close to her which do not fit into her normal sets and thus the set perfectly embodies the drift idea. This blend of old tracks and new releases is well worth checking out as you sit outside in the current sunny weather.

DRIFT 019: ona:v

DRIFT 023 comes in the form of a unique and experimental collection of music and more from Greek artist Yorgia Karidi. Her collaborations cover a broad spectrum of artists, disciplines & a wide range of musical genres. Her recent work with Jay Glass Dubs for 'Epitaph' had numerous featuress and reviews on Wire, Pitchfork, XL Recordings. She has curated live radio shows (Cannibal Radio, Random Access Radio, Theory of Plankton), has lent her voice to radio spots, experimental films, documentaries and feature films and has featured in theater productions; composing music & as a performer. She also notably featured as an opening Dj for Plissken Festival 2019 and hosted Boiler Room Athens. 

Taking inspiration from her home in the west of Athens, she funnels her surroundings into her work. As an intermedia artist, she creates visual art alongside her live sets which contain everything from vocals and field recordings to experimental beats. Currently, she is hard at work on a collection she calls 'A Place To Hang Out' which examines the idea of being outside and spending unproductive time. She finds that there are often substantial ideas stemming from this time spent outdoors, thoughts that find their way into her all aspects of her work.

DRIFT 023 is to date the most experimental and bizarre mix we have had on the series. A genuinely weird and wonderful live mix filled with exciting twists and turns. It is a eclectic journey though a range of different sounds including vocal snippets by Yorgia herself, don't miss out!

DRIFT 023: Yorgia Karidi

Episode 24 of DRIFT welcomes the DJ and promoter Padawan Sound (a.k.a. Paddy H-K). He has an impressive depth of musical knowledge and is involved, and active, in a large number of music communities, both online, and in his hometown of Leeds. First and foremost amongst these, is his own project, Think Tank: A Place For Your Head. Since their inception in 2017, Think Tank have sought to reframe the more hedonistic aspects of club culture, by curating ambient listening spaces that foster creativity, communal reflection, and recovery. Until very recently, they held a residency on KMAH Radio, which sadly came to an end when the station stopped broadcasting. You can, however, still listen to a back-catalogue of their shows by following the link below – something I strongly recommend you to do as there are some truly beautiful ambient mixes in there waiting to be discovered. The Think Tank events and radio shows provided a great deal of inspiration when I was first starting DRIFT and the way in which they reshape conceptions of club culture is something which I have always deeply admired. It is an honour and a privilege to have the man behind this, Paddy H-K, contribute to the series.

Padawan Sound began piecing together this mix at a time of year when emotions such as grief and loss weighed heavily on his mind. Music can often be an outlet for emotions – both positive and negative – and he attempts to convey those feelings in this mix through the intricate layering, warping and editing of textures, field recordings and samples. These sounds are expertly intertwined with an exquisite selection of ambient tracks – some of which carry the mix forward and some of which give just a few seconds to enhance or embellish one particular section. The mix was recorded using turntables, CDJs and Ableton, a combination of hardware and software which allowed many of the tracks to be chopped, looped and edited heavily using effects to create new sounds and textures. It is through this approach that he creates a truly unique listening experience which immerses, moves, and begs to be listened to again and again.

Over 2 years into the DRIFT series, we are proud to present the 25th episode by Tension. Tension has long been on the radar making wabves over in Ireland both as a producer / DJ and as co-founder of record label Flood. His productions provide experimentation in global and industrial club styles with a central focus on left-field melody, vast instrumentation and hard hitting percussive rhythms. Flood has been the centrepiece of his collaborative efforts with fellow label founder Doubt as well as various artists in the underground club scene from the UK, America and larger Europe. Tension’s debut LP ‘In Cascade’ Released on Flood in June of this year and stood out in it's creative sound desgin and experimental rhythms. His monthly show on Dublin Digital Radio features regular mixes form himself as well as guests.

In his mix for Drift, Tension creates a varied blend of ambience, experimental percussion and several jazz cuts to showcase some of the music further afield from the dance floor which has served as an influence to him. The result is a mix which is gearded less towards club play and more towards attentive home listening.

DRIFT 025: Tension

Drift 28 is perhaps the furthest we've had from club sounds so far and comes from Swiss experimental producer Simon Grab. The co-founder of ganzerplatz sound studios has been an active musician in a wide range of contexts, with a strong punk attitude, always drawing from his roots in dub and noise. As a composer and sound artist, he produces music & sound design for feature films, documentaries, theatre and radio. In live performances and installations Simon Grab uses the venue as an acoustic playground which leads to a truly organic and inimatble approach to his music which caught me compltely off-guard the first time I heard it. 

In his recent work, he focuses on reduction, and the peculiarity of self-referential systems. The album 'Anthropocene Panic' (sound-space Records London 2020) follows his recent LP 'Posthuman Species' and the EP 'Extinction' on -OUS records based in Zurich. His 'Diamonds EP' in collaboration with Togolese rapper Yao Bobby and Asian Dub Foundation’s Dhangsha released on Bristol’s LavaLava Records, and has been chosen as one of the Albums of the year 2019 by the online magazine The Quietus. It is truly a brilliant EP and turned my idea of what music can be completely on its head - if you are into unusual or different sounding music then I urge you to go and listen to it!

For his mix, Simon brings some of his own productions which explore rhythmic and pulsating noise before showcasing some of his favourite tracks from genres including noise, ambient and more. The mix twists and turns through deep and experimental soundscapes with whirling bleeps and crackles stamped throughout. Industrial frequencies jump and jitter for the entire hour - this is not mere background music, rather something to be actively listened to and enjoyed.
