DRIFT Mix Series

After a long hiatus, a few side projects and a full cover redesign, we finally return to the DRIFT mix series for episode 34. This one's a special one, with Edinburgh-based rising producer, record cutter and DJ 'The Last Days of Pompeii' taking control. Entitled 'Sound in Motion', he creates a vibrant collage of his favourite soundtrack, soundscapes, monologues and dialogues from cinema and television. With genres spanning ambient, modern classical and with the occasional indie throw back the mix reimagines soundtrack scores and movie scenes. Included below is the track/watch list which I encourage you to check out and do some further watching/listening. The Last Days of Pompeii's deep knowledge of film and visual media comes through as he blends memorable title sequences and deep cuts from foreign films with excerpts and monologues to create a truly immersive one hour listening experience. DRIFT 034: The Last Days of Pompeii

2023 kicks off in a brand new direction for the DRIFT mix series, with talented producer and DJ Ecilant taking charge for an hour of chilled-out hip hop. He superbly blends old and new school tracks from both sides of the Atlantic, drawing for classic vocals and instrumentals as well as seamlessly weaving some of his and his friend's productions throughout. DRIFT 035: Ecilant

Continuing the DRIFT series in style, episode 36 comes in hot in the form of a longer form mix from Gary. Well versed in blending bass heavy club tracks, he takes a step back to share some of his favourite chilled tracks with us over the course of 90 minutes. During this time, he steers through a truly varied range of music spanning the downtempo range, from blissful electronica, through hip hop instrumentals and vocals, to percussive and emotive tracks from all corners of the globe. Despite the range of genres and style, the mix has a steady flow, the expertly curated tracks are overlayed expertly and the show stands testament to Gary's ability as both a selector and a DJ.

DRIFT 036: Gary

For episode 37, we're delighted to shine the spotlight on talented, Northampton-based DJ, Moose. With residencies on London stations Mode and Voices, he regularly fills the airwaves with forward thinking and exciting uk club sounds, focussing on leftfield music from garage to jungle. Alongside this, he is a skilled producer and boasts a string of excellent releases over the last few years including recent gems on labels Solitude and Profound Sound. 

Stepping back slightly from his usual style for this mix, he sticks to the genres he knows well but explores the more chilled out end of the spectrum, with choice selections from artists such as Om Unit and Yoofee. His aim for his contribution to the series was to touch on a Sunday afternoon feeling, using tunes he’s always had but never found an opportunity to play through normal channels such as club and radio. In his own words, not getting to play them as much genuinely improved the mix as it was a lot more fun to mix & was super excited putting the tracklist together, being something different to scheduled programming. This perfectly mirrors the DRIFT philosophy and we're absolutely delighted to be able to share it with you on a Sunday afternoon!

“Whenever I go, I can't help but notice signs of a looming change. I eavesdrop on conversations of creatures big and small, and like me, they seem uneasy and uncertain about what's to come. Something is in the air, dark clouds gather, winds are shifting course. Amidst the confusion and restlessness, the voices of non-human and human worlds blend in a worrisome symphony. This piece is an ode to anticipation, to the beauty of different forms of life on the brink of the sixth mass extinction. Joining in the chorus are the American toad, northern winds, an old kettle, Mr. Cat, tawny owl, crickets, domestic chickens and pigs, trumpeter swans, honey bees, truck horns, cormorants, seagulls and other elements and critters.” — Alëna Korolëva 

Something is afoot, the Tkaronto/Toronto-based artist and curator, Alëna Korolëva tells us in her new soundscape composition “premonitions”. American toads and water beetles set things in motion before the long-form piece journeys through a multitude of field recordings and non-human voices in a quasi-cinematographic fashion. Korolëva layers and manipulates sounds from the real into a sonic chimaera which mutates concrete ambiances into vaporous surrealities through the modes of collage. A storm blankets the soundscape, things grow quieter. Distant parallels with Luc Ferrari’s "musique anecdotique" come to mind, yet here the piece materializes in an acoustic docu-fiction of some sort, that takes the form of a waking dream. Various scenes, ranging from the mundane to the uncanny, unfold in eardrums exposing an underlying sense of earthly melancholy. A weight lurks throughout while winds, pigs, chickens, and mechanical apparatus weave into a strange agitated tapestry. A kettle whistles, a cat meows – Korolëva sprinkles the gloom with touches of humor and audible senses of home. Trumpeter swans are joined by a trumpeter human; Chayka Chekhov responds to the avian songs in a interspecies dialogue – echoing Jim Nollman’s “Playing Music With Animals”. Environments cascade into a finale droned out by truck horns. Their ringings and animal cries swell in a somber abstraction bearing the weight of a presentiment. “What does the future hold?” we ask ourselves throughout the album as we dissolve in imbrications of positionings, emanating from one another like stacking dolls. Poly-layered, “premonitions” engages in play, in negotiation with the disparate spaces and voices of a troubled world as if it created harmonious discord to decipher the ominous clouds gathering in the horizon.

Miri Malek is a Fife-born, Scottish-Iranian DJ & Producer playing a powerful blend of low-end influenced selections, with a focus on stranger textures and dark, percussive grooves. They are the founder of Dwam, a Berlin-based interdisciplinary platform running events and arts residencies.

For their DRIFT mix, Miri Malek expertly threads together deep, pulsating leftfield cuts with mutated dancehall and ethereal downtempo to create a seamless mix of experimental electronic sounds. They had this to say about it:
"Life has been pretty hectic lately, so I took the moment to slow down and get cuddly with some wiggly rhythms and long comfy blends".

DRIFT 038: Miri Malek

DRIFT 023 comes in the form of a unique and experimental collection of music and more from Greek artist Yorgia Karidi. Her collaborations cover a broad spectrum of artists, disciplines & a wide range of musical genres. Her recent work with Jay Glass Dubs for 'Epitaph' had numerous featuress and reviews on Wire, Pitchfork, XL Recordings. She has curated live radio shows (Cannibal Radio, Random Access Radio, Theory of Plankton), has lent her voice to radio spots, experimental films, documentaries and feature films and has featured in theater productions; composing music & as a performer. She also notably featured as an opening Dj for Plissken Festival 2019 and hosted Boiler Room Athens. 

Taking inspiration from her home in the west of Athens, she funnels her surroundings into her work. As an intermedia artist, she creates visual art alongside her live sets which contain everything from vocals and field recordings to experimental beats. Currently, she is hard at work on a collection she calls 'A Place To Hang Out' which examines the idea of being outside and spending unproductive time. She finds that there are often substantial ideas stemming from this time spent outdoors, thoughts that find their way into her all aspects of her work.

DRIFT 023 is to date the most experimental and bizarre mix we have had on the series. A genuinely weird and wonderful live mix filled with exciting twists and turns. It is a eclectic journey though a range of different sounds including vocal snippets by Yorgia herself, don't miss out!
