New Wave Podcast 018: DJ Karawai (RUFF GHETTO MIX)

With a DIY network of producers, DJs, collectives and parties making Russia a hotbed for activity, DJ Karawai found himself being absorbed by the music scene growing around him. Over recent years he has zoned in on ghettotech production, with his roots laying deeply in dubstep/UK sounds and also a big influence from the Chicago Juke scene. His eccentric and 'fuck it' attitude is a quality that transcends into his mixing style, production work and choice of collaborators.

With the Russian scene being notoriously known for borrowing sounds and genres from other scenes, it is no surprise that DJ Karawai's sound and style is the way it is. His capability to unite sounds from different niches of electronic music, has allowed him to build a reputation of always keeping the crowd on their toes. His mix for New Wave, made up of mostly new tracks he's been finding recently, accelerates through these peak-time rave styles with an extrovert's touch. 

Ever since forming his label urwaxx with friend Greenwald it has been at the forefront of the rising electro/ghetto scene, which has showcased many young up and coming talents. With the popularity of each release becoming greater and greater, he has attracted some of the most interesting and boundary pushing artists. 

We also caught up with DJ Karawai to discuss his take on the Russian scene, early love for dubstep and throwing dubstep parties, his label and his love for GOA trance.

Premiering 'Shutting Up' by L/F/D/M (@LFDM) taken from the Mutual Autopsy EP out November 9, 2020 via @voitax

Following his debut contribution to the label’s catalogue this year via the Midnight Shift x Voitax „Mothership” compilation, (a contribution saw the artist paired with Veronica Maximova) the Brighton based producer L/F/D/M, also known as Richard Smith, is the latest to join the catalogue on Voitax. Having pushed the boundaries of his own music, Smith managed to release an impressive amount of records throughout the last years and has perpetuated his sound on cult labels such as Cititrax, Midnight Shift, Optimo Trax, Ecstatic and Clan Destine Records.

The British producer now returns to Voitax with his »Mutual Autopsy« EP - a strong four-tracker that is characterised by Smith’s undenably grainy lo-fi signature. The whole package is armed with heavyweight kicks, bloating basslines and crunchy, percussive patterns, that he perfectly crowns with some memorable and catchy synth lines. The former art student, as well as one half of Bronze Teeth, shows once again his ability to modulate his way into the abstract, while keeping it groovy and warm and firmly secures himself in the ranks with the techno avant-garde.

Thissperso - Aborto Obligatorio EP [NNY Records - NNY004]

Argentinian producer Thissperso has been living in Barcelona for a good season while producing music that reflects what he experiences in his day to day life. His productions are harsh and violent, but they have a quality and energy that makes them contagious and addictive. This work, edited by NNY Records, compiles some old songs that have been revisited and remastered, which coexist with new compositions that continue to explore the most visceral and dark side of electronics; a taste that he shares with some other producers like Dim Deck or Sabotaje, who collaborate on a couple of songs.

This is the work of a producer who is not tied to any style and who enjoys watching dance floors fly through the air when one of his songs is played. Producers like Parris Smith have already been able to verify it in the first person with a couple of songs from this new EP in which we find Electro mixed with Industrial, EBM, Acid and a punk and nonconformist attitude that fits perfectly in the times that we have to do live and in a record label like ours.

If we could describe LUZ1E's music with one word, it would certainly be "eclectic". Having drawn influence from her brother's collection of Chicago and New York House, the Frankfurt-born producer has learnt to manifest her learnings into a fresh take on the seminal sound. Following her success on labels such as Lobster Theremin, Shall Not Fade, Goddess Music, we are very excited to present her four track EP for VOITAX - Radical Optimism. The opener "Transition" lays down LUZ1E's law, featuring headstrong drum work, matched with equally menacing bass arpeggios. If the theme of apocalypticism wasn't obvious enough from the opening track's looming pads, it will become apparent with "Electronic Warfare". Served up on electro's trustworthy chassis, we watch the distorted arpeggios unfold as the tension of the pads guide us to an dystopian finale. On the flip, the title track "Radical Optimism" uses shrill pad pressure to break the track's dreamy opening sequence - as the modulating bass provides plenty of frequencies for the dance floor. The closing track, "Emotional Intelligence" provides a candid looking glass into the producer's musical influences. LUZ1E's knack for emotive pads furnish the track's uplifting structure with class, as breaks and bass deliver us to a tender climax.
