Following on from our re-issue of Nana Love’s forgotten classic ‘Disco Documentary’ which created quite a stir among lovers of off-kilter disco beats including Gilles Peterson, Wax Poetics and Huey Morgan, we present ‘Obaatan Pa’, another ultra rare gem from the West African vocalist Angel Love. This album perfectly encapsulates the ‘highlife’ movement that dominated Ghana during the late seventies,  a form of dance music that took on influences from US disco and funk, wrapping them up in energetic African rhythms with a level of ebullience that’s beyond infectious. Presented alongside an charming 70’s radio advert which was aimed at London’s West African community describing Ms Love as ‘The Voice That Turns Them On’, ‘Obaatan Pa’s stellar musicianship and carnival atmosphere has certainly stood the test of time. With a new interest and awareness in African music (and particularly highlife) seeping into the public consciousness of late, there couldn’t be a better time to explore the special magic of ‘Angel Love’.

A highly respected crate digger, DJ extraordinaire, record label go-to-guy and one half of dynamite duo Kon & Amir, we are proud to present this very special collection of music chosen by Amir. Having dedicated his life to mapping hip hop and dance music's lineage, the Boston native has been called upon by Capitol Records, Pete Rock and Shady Records among others for his musical expertise over the years, not to mention having curated quite an incredible catalogue of compilations for BBE. Put simply, this guy has an almost unrivalled ear for a great record.
As you may well have guessed from the title, this latest outing has a distinctly latin flavour. Comprising a selection of obscure tracks from the 60's and 70's recorded mainly in New York (but featuring artists from Detroit and the Dominican Republic), there are bound to be new discoveries here for even the most ardent collector. Ranging styles are on display here, but the record has a definite leaning toward upbeat Salsa & Guaguancó. Latin superstars such as Joey Pastrana and Louie Colon may have been household names among the tenements of East Harlem & The Bronx back in the day, but they have never reached a mainstream audience outside the Latin community. Now thanks to Amir's relentless digging, some of the finest and most authentic Latin dance music can be enjoyed on one fiery-hot record.

We're delighted to announce the reissue of this ultra-rare LP, originally issued on JSR Records back in 1980. Heavily influenced by the likes of Bobby Hutcherson and Roy Ayers, 'Taking Care Of Business' is full of positive, uptempo soul/jazz gems, featuring Ted Coleman's wonderful vibraphone playing throughout. Not only did Coleman both sing and play piano, synth and vibes on the record, but he also designed the artwork himself; a true DIY LP if ever there was one. This DIY ethos even extended to the New Jersey label JSR who originally pressed the LP, describing themselves as: "a new company that helps working club bands that can sell their own records. JSR artists spend no money for recording or production costs, and there are no recording contracts." This could well explain the album's rarity, with original copies selling on Discogs for eye-wateringly high prices.
Ted Coleman cut his teeth playing local clubs and venues in his hometown of Pittsburgh, where his skills on vibes and mallet percussion quickly earned him popularity in the local area. 'Taking Care Of Business' was his very first studio album, blending latin rhythms with smooth jazz and soul stylings. The musicianship on the record is striking, the vocals mellow and soulful, the lyrics warm and tender: put simply this album is designed to warm the heart. Still writing and recording at 'Joyful Noise', his Metuchen New Jersey studio, Ted Coleman also performs across the US with his "Good Vibes" band. We hope you find as much joy in this scarce and remarkable debut LP as we do.
