For the first time since it began in 1991, the pioneering rave, drum & bass & jungle label, started by Danny Donnelly, Suburban Base has digitally re-mastered its entire back catalog and is making them available to download via iTunes.

Up until now, releases from the label, which shut its doors in 1997, only existed in vinyl format, but from February 23rd its back catalog has been re-mastered & can be bought from iTunes and extended to other digital music stores from March. This includes sought after releases from artist such as Son'z Of A Loop Da Loop Era, M&M, Rachel Wallace, Krome & Time, QBass, Jonny Jungle, DJ Hype, Cutty Ranks, Marvellous Cain, Remarc, Boogie Times Tribe & Mampi Swift.

In addition to the back catalog an album called Suburban Base Records - The History Of Hardcore, Jungle, Drum & Bass: 1991-1997 will be released on March 3rd. The compilation presents a snapshot of the original underground rave scene that ultimately crossed over into the charts and is ready to be rediscovered by the original ravers and uncovered by a new generation of fans.

Over three mixes it will take you on a chronological journey starting with Hardcore presenting rave classics Rachel Wallace - Tell Me Why (M&M Full Vocal), Krome & Time - This Sound Is For The Underground and cheeky Smart E's - Sesame's Treet (Vocal Mix). Mix two then moves on to the
Jungle era with gems from Phuture Assassins - Roots N Future (Make Dem Know Mix); QBass –Deepa and Hype tracks Dawn of the Fever, The Chopper and Dream. The final mix treats us to some legendary Drum and Bass tracks including Run Tings - Ruff Revival, Marvellous Cain - Dub Plate Style, Cutty Ranks – Limb By Limb (DJ SS Remix), D'Cruze – Lonely and
Mampi Swift - On The Beat.

The album is available as both as a DJ mixed cd release and also digitally. It will use the original graffiti artwork from Suburban Base’s in-house designer Dave Nodz.

Lastly, a few little notes about this release. It started as a small thing, just trying to get 20 remixes of tunes to commemorate the 20 year anniversary of Kniteforce. It turned into something much bigger – and certainly much more expensive to do. I was originally going to do the remixes myself, and then I started asking people I admire, and before you know it, I had some of the most amazing people in the scene remixing tracks. At that point, I thought I should do a proper CD. And that became 3 CDs, one mixed and two unmixed. And then I thought, what the hell, lets do a box set.
 
I have tried my best to make this an amazing collectors item. Everything here has been planned and worked on for the last 5 months. As usual, I have done my best to make sure everything is high quality. And as usual, I took no consideration of budget lol. I mention this only because of the price. It was originally going to be $99.00 but I went with $92 because it seems more apt – 1992 was when the label started after all…

Tony, who had already had a release on Chill Records with Blame (Murderin MC/Death Row) tells me that the day he went over to work on some tunes with Andrew, he just grabbed a handful of records from his collection and turned up brimming with ideas. "It was quite sampled based, I had a lot of hip hop and just started to collect the original breakbeats". Andrew was already an accomplished producer, releasing quality techno on Chill Records and it's sister label Up-Roar under the names Rotor, Campher & Menthol, and the aforementioned Terra Incognita. He recalls "Tony had a great collection of hip hop vinyl, so we had a ton of great samples to hand. Our “Concrete Jungle EP” as Justice & Mercy was a huge hit. We took some pretty big liberties with sampling other work, but everyone was doing it. The sampler was king. Rather than hook up MIDI equipment, I would just borrow synths and drum machines off friends, and sample the sounds I liked. It wasn’t as flexible as having the real equipment, but it was a lot less hassle. I’d do anything to avoid having a tangled mess of cables everywhere. I can’t remember exactly what I’d sampled, but there was definitely a Roland SH-101 in there somewhere".

The main sample in 'Sooth My Soul' was 'My Love' by Collapse which Tony bought in Soul Sense Records in Luton back in 1991, and he was just itching to flip it into a jungle tune. The vocal in SMS was from 'Shelter Me' by Circuit. "The whole tune just came together. All the samples just worked and we did it in one session, though Andrew would of had to work on the mix afterwards to get it right" Tony muses. Andrew continues "I initially had mixed feelings about Soothe My Soul. It’s a great track, one of my all time favourites, but it was very sampled loop heavy, which is something I’d usually tried to avoid. It was all written on the EPS, and it really came around because Tony found the amazing synth and vocal break and adding the “Soothe My Soul” sample just finished it off nicely! It still sends tingles down my spine 27 years later, and I consider it the best track Tony and I did together. It was one of those tracks that just fell into place. It’s always nice when that happens! One of the interesting things in the track is that a bug in the EPS sequencer timing produced an interesting side effect. The bug affected the duration of notes randomly, as the EPS was not very precise. The lead instrument had a bit of noise after it, that should have been truncated off, but on some of the notes, it played a fraction of the noise, creating what sounds like another deliberately played instrument behind the lead sound".

The EP went on to become a huge release at the time and cemented the names of Justice & Mercy into the heart of the emerging jungle scene. Both EPs were caned at all the biggest raves across the UK through the summer of 1992, appearing on mixtapes from all the big players and energising ravers the length and breadth of the country, as Andrew fondly recalls; "My favourite ever event was Fantazia: One Step Beyond in Donnington, back in 1992. I think there were more than 25,000 people dancing in a field, and this one was actually legally organised. The atmosphere was electric, and to top it off, the second from last tune of the night played was one of ours, “Soothe My Soul” by Justice & Mercy. I was right at the back, on a small hill, watching 25,000+ people going crazy to one of my tunes. You can’t beat that!"

Justice & Mercy 'Fake Lobsters' - Vinyl Fanatiks 013 - 192mp3 clip

Obviously these 2 phenomenal artists deserve to be in the Hardcore Hall Of Fame on their own merit. Jimmy J, owner of the Remix Records shop and one 3rd of the Happy Hardcore trio, Triple J and Cru-L-T (DJ Luna-C), the legend, the pioneer, the master, the creator of all mankind.... but when they combined, they were immense and produced some of Hardcore's most important records. 
Their full on relentless, perfectly executed breakbeats, old skool stab patterns and uplifting pianos seriously captured that early to mid 90's feel down to a tee. They have so many great tracks and remixes under their belt.
The monumental triumph 'Take Me Away' was quite possibly one of the first hardcore tracks I ever heard and to this day, still gives me that ultimate rush. They also had an international hit with crowd favourite, 'Six Days'. The track's highly recognisable breaks and percussion give it energy throughout and the simple, yet memorable vocals take it to another level. Their remix of E'voke's Runaway just oozes class. So good that I had to play both the Original Mix and, in my opinion, the far superior '97 Remix. The duo were indeed, true masters of the 'remix' and it definitely shows on their version of DJ Demand's bouncy techno stomper, 'Dark & Light'. This could just be one of the greatest remixes ever. Complete with added Snap samples to bring us into the 'light' deep into the track. It's just a stroke of genius.
Jimmy J & Cru-L-T came up with the goods time after time and will forever be one of the greatest ever Happy Hardcore duos.
