For the next installment of our podcast series, we are more than pleased to welcome DJ Aakmael, who delivers on a one-hour mix filled of raw and deep house of the purist variety as per usual.

DJ Aakmael (aka Greg Stewart) is definitely not an ordinary deep house DJ/producer. The Richmond (VA) based artist is an absolute legend and storied DJ/producer who has got started behind the decks at the tender age of 16 doing parties, school jams, weddings, house parties, etc., playing everything from hip hop to r'n'b, house, classical, jazz, reggae and opera, and has been releasing records since the early 2000's (when all of the DJ magazines, radio and A-list DJs only paid attention to progressive, big-room, tribal house...), devoting his life to producing and curating some of the best house music the world has to offer and keeping the deep, soulful and raw house sound pure.

Whether it be educating the ears of countless listeners throughout his 20 years stint on WDCE 90.1 FM or representing the sound of Virginia on international labels, the American musician has done his part in keeping the fire of house music alive in the States.

Roughly 15 years into his craft and responsible for releasing heater and heater over the last decade for respected dance labels such as Second Hand Records, Nite Grooves, People of Heart, Uzuri, Scissor and Thread, Church, Freerange Records, Axe On Wax, Release Sustain, Kolour LTD, Hizou, Monologues Records, Dogmatik Records, Flumo/ANMA, as well as his own imprint UnXpozd Entertainment, DJ Aakmael is slowly, steadily making his mark on the lexicon of house and it seems like he is somehow only getting started and a bright future awaits him.

Aak has graced the dance floors of About Blank (Berlin), Fáklya Klub (Budapest), Good Room (NY), Bossa Nova Civic Club (NY), Output (NY), TBA (NY), MotorCity Wine (Detroit) and many more, and played alongside Frances Harris, DJ Spinna, DJ Sprinkles, Patrice Scott and Kai Alcé, just to name a few.

Amaré brings an immense amount of benevolence into everything he does. Known to his immediate circle as a modern-day Marco Polo, he unites his cultural upbringing deliberately into his sets as a DJ.

Born in Trinidad & Tobago and raised there until his family departed the small island for the busy city of Hong Kong, he was able to grow in a culture that thrives on dance music (soca, dancehall, disco). His move to Hong Kong as a teen exposed his eyes and ears to various international sounds, via record shops, thus establishing a passion point for deep house.

Originally hailing from Australia, Morgan's beginnings saw her experiment with hip hop, soul and disco. However, Morgan found her true calling in electronic and house music, listing in 2017 in Mixmag's 20 Artists rising from the underground and we definitely agree.
Nowadays she's a NYC based fresh talent, artist, producer and DJ known for releases on labels such as Budare, Sunday Money Music, Guy From Downstairs' GFD,  Loco Dice's Desolat imprint and for her collaborations with Guti on The Martinez Brothers' Cuttin' Headz. The latter, including a Dan Ghenacia and Chris Carrier remix, are expertly crafted tunes that vary from dancefloor focused tracks to more soulful and downtempo productions.

Beyond that, she's also one of the driving forces behind the infamous Golden Record NYC party series.

From the material she's supplied thus far, it's clear she has plenty of versatility to share.

With a never waining passion for exploration and evolution within his relationship to music, Brett has been fortunate to experience a successful, varied, and full career within the industry over the past twenty-five years. With experience in film score work, live performance, and university music teaching, Brett finds musical fulfillment through collaboration, education, and sonic exploration. Since early beginnings, Brett's music has recently evolved into the more experimental and ambient. Exploring creativity through technical synthesis techniques melded with field recordings, tape manipulation, and meaningful intentions. With a keen eye for detailed and lush sonic landscapes, Brett has found evolving inspiration within the experimentation and practice of obscure sound design, and synthesis techniques involving filter pinging and modular systems.

Tilt Shift sits firmly left of center, a difficult-to-label square peg that unintentionally fails to fit a pigeonhole. Borrowing from the photography term, Tilt Shift refers to two different types of movement, a selective focus with a large depth of field used to control perception. This can be applied to our music policy, tilting the vertical axis resulting in a sharp area of focus without reducing the depth of field. The selective focus that can be achieved by both tilting and shifting movements, It's compelling because the effect is different from that which you may have become accustomed to. This movement is often used to avoid the convergence of parallel lines, or as we have come to think of it, it’s where the lines blur.

Let'z roll back to tha yr of 1986'. I was 1 yr fresh in2 Chicago House & Detroit Techno but could NOT let go of my most passionate sound by my favortite Industrial Music group, Ministry. I was blessed 2 hear/see them live on this tour on their Orlando stop @ Electric Ave.
My cousin & myself had front row & my sister Angie was chilling with the group back stage.
This was a concert that still inspires me whenever I hear or play any of their tracks on this album. Also from Chicago, I would like 2 see a street named after founder of Ministry & frontman, Al Jourgensen. Most def one of Chicago'z electronic music pioneers.
In any case, if you're a hardcore industrial head like myself, then you can RELATE!!!

Drone Time Podcast #019 | Scan 7

From the city that has no fear! If you talk about Detroit and the history of techno, you are not allowed to forget about the collective that is Scan 7, the fabled anonymous masters of stealth, activism and classic Detroit techno.
Often regarded as pioneers of techno, Scan 7 are a mysterious coming together of 7 members born in the late 80’s led by Trackmasta Lou (whose nickname was given to him by Mad Mike himself) and also composed by Vernell Shelton and Maurice Elohim King.
Set out to make a difference, and ended up making history!

1993 was a pivotal year for Scan 7. First release, “Voices Beyond”, came out on the Submerge compilation “Escape Into The Void”. Then, the introducing Scan 7 EP “Black Moon Rising” came out on the fabled Underground Resistance label.
This EP introduced the dark style of techno very much at home on Mike Banks' label.

Trackmasta Lou, after debuting as both Xzile and Black Man on Tresor's "313" compilation, released two Scan 7’s albums on the Berlin label, "Dark Territory" and "Resurfaced".

2000 was also the year of their first live act including members Trackmasta Lou, Detroit’s Own Dj Red Line, Blak Tony, and Nuff. Thanks to Carl Craig they were able to close out the first DEMF underground stage. Other members soon joined such as Dj Deep, Agent Kedi, Tatem, Ghost, and One of 7 who was the first female member.

In 2005 they founded their own label, Cratesavers Muzik, where they released several EPs beyond the ones on F Communications and Elypsia. Then back on Tresor in 2012 with the infamous "The Resistance EP".

Fighting an ongoing battle to keep the soul of the underground and its independence alive, the resistance was formed! For the last 20 years they have stood guard at the door of the underground. They have strategically enlisted their soldier-hood, some have vanished, and some remain.

Now the resurgence is here. The Scan 7 collective has enrolled new blood into its arsenal.
The youngest member is Ken aka Mr Hooper, an exceptional talent out of the Motor City.
He wrote his first song on the piano playing four finger chords at 6 years old and recorded it on cassette. In 2006, at the age of 17, he was introduced to Trackmasta Lou, who rejected his tracks for 7 years before he gained entry to be a part of Scan 7. Hooper’s productions are unique, fresh, with a crispy sound which enriches the releases.

Scan 7 perform with masks, and not a lot of people know their faces. It is just about the sound. Raw and real from the Motor City.
Their sound is special. It goes from original authentic, deep and dark dose of techno to experimental, and house vibes. You can call them a full musical package out of Michigan – but never forget to mention their daily inspiration from their city Detroit and its culture. The city that always pushes them to go further and to believe that they can achieve everything they want.

Scan 7 has had a pretty busy 2018 with new releases on well-respected labels, such as Derrick May's Transmat Records and The Exaltics’ Solar One Music, and a European tour planned.
