For the next installment of our podcast series, we are more than pleased to welcome DJ Aakmael, who delivers on a one-hour mix filled of raw and deep house of the purist variety as per usual.

DJ Aakmael (aka Greg Stewart) is definitely not an ordinary deep house DJ/producer. The Richmond (VA) based artist is an absolute legend and storied DJ/producer who has got started behind the decks at the tender age of 16 doing parties, school jams, weddings, house parties, etc., playing everything from hip hop to r'n'b, house, classical, jazz, reggae and opera, and has been releasing records since the early 2000's (when all of the DJ magazines, radio and A-list DJs only paid attention to progressive, big-room, tribal house...), devoting his life to producing and curating some of the best house music the world has to offer and keeping the deep, soulful and raw house sound pure.

Whether it be educating the ears of countless listeners throughout his 20 years stint on WDCE 90.1 FM or representing the sound of Virginia on international labels, the American musician has done his part in keeping the fire of house music alive in the States.

Roughly 15 years into his craft and responsible for releasing heater and heater over the last decade for respected dance labels such as Second Hand Records, Nite Grooves, People of Heart, Uzuri, Scissor and Thread, Church, Freerange Records, Axe On Wax, Release Sustain, Kolour LTD, Hizou, Monologues Records, Dogmatik Records, Flumo/ANMA, as well as his own imprint UnXpozd Entertainment, DJ Aakmael is slowly, steadily making his mark on the lexicon of house and it seems like he is somehow only getting started and a bright future awaits him.

Aak has graced the dance floors of About Blank (Berlin), Fáklya Klub (Budapest), Good Room (NY), Bossa Nova Civic Club (NY), Output (NY), TBA (NY), MotorCity Wine (Detroit) and many more, and played alongside Frances Harris, DJ Spinna, DJ Sprinkles, Patrice Scott and Kai Alcé, just to name a few.

Originally hailing from Australia, Morgan's beginnings saw her experiment with hip hop, soul and disco. However, Morgan found her true calling in electronic and house music, listing in 2017 in Mixmag's 20 Artists rising from the underground and we definitely agree.
Nowadays she's a NYC based fresh talent, artist, producer and DJ known for releases on labels such as Budare, Sunday Money Music, Guy From Downstairs' GFD,  Loco Dice's Desolat imprint and for her collaborations with Guti on The Martinez Brothers' Cuttin' Headz. The latter, including a Dan Ghenacia and Chris Carrier remix, are expertly crafted tunes that vary from dancefloor focused tracks to more soulful and downtempo productions.

Beyond that, she's also one of the driving forces behind the infamous Golden Record NYC party series.

From the material she's supplied thus far, it's clear she has plenty of versatility to share.

Ah, Byron, Byron, Byron—what can we say? We're absolutely enamored with this guy's music. And, we couldn't be more thrilled to welcome him into our family on Low Recordings.

We are back with our second vinyl release, featuring Byron's "Love 4 Music." This 4-track EP is a celebration of love, with Side A and Side B showcasing two distinct styles where Byron truly shines. Side A delivers the club hits, while Side B envelops us in a soulful/R&B/deep house vibe.

Kicking off Side A is "Creepin' With U." The track begins with haunting chords that exude an eerie and raw vibe, swiftly leading into a thumping, club-certified kick drum. As the song progresses, a hint of nostalgia from the lo-fi days creeps in, complemented by vocal samples that add to the eerie atmosphere. Yes, it's eerie, but it's also robust and captivating—perfect for enticing bodies to move on a warehouse dance floor.

Next up is "Work That Girl (Tribal Mix)," the heavyweight of the four, tailor-made for the club/warehouse scene. The track starts with the clicking and clacking of hats and snares, Byron's vocals weaving in and out of the mix. The lyrics are crafted for a sweaty night of dancing, and as the kicks thump in, the energy rises. Byron's trademark chords seamlessly ooze into the mix, uniting our bodies with the song. Acid-sounding notes eventually lead us in and out of the groove—a solid club anthem.

Flipping over to Side B, we're greeted by "Inner Visions," where Byron slows things down and takes us in a different direction. A classic synth line initiates the track with a smooth kick, creating an airy vibe that melds perfectly with its melody. As the song grooves, Byron's soulful vocals pierce through, infusing warmth into his words. The warmth persists as the song progresses, with his voice echoing slightly more dissonance, leaving us with a proper vision for the closing track.

Closing out the EP, Byron guides us with a vision for a fun night in "Make Me Feel." Deep with a touch of R&B, the song exudes warmth and is all about feeling good with the person who got you through the night. Byron's sultry voice sits perfectly on the track as the basslines guide us through. His playful nature keeps things light and fun, rounding off the EP on a high note.

Drone Time Podcast #023 | Orlando Voorn

Ahead of his last highly appreciated release on the new-born Italian label NICEPEOPLE, we managed to invite Orlando Voorn, one of the greatest artists in the electronic music scene, to contribute to our podcast series.

Orlando is one of the first Dutch musicians to establish a vital connection between Detroit and Amsterdam in the early 90’s and to forge links with the Detroit originators.
Voorn has long been recognized as one of the Netherland’s most original and ingenious producers in the world of electronic dance music and instinctively grasped the ephemeral blend of funk, jazz and machine music that drove the Motor City groove, and furthered that grove with well over a hundred of his own cuts under a dizzying array of monikers. In fact, his high production rate and keeness to switch names at the drop of a hat probably held his career back in later years - piecing together just what is and isn't an Orlando Voorn production is a task that only the deepest techno spotters are equal to. It's only now, as techno history is being carefully annotated that Voorn's importance as a producer is being fully recognised.

He started working on his own productions towards the end of the 80’s, when he acquired his first sequencer.
The first production, “Hurt ‘Em Bad”, under his alias Fixomatic, was an old school hip-hop record and sold very well for that period of time.
Later on Voorn produced a couple of tracks based on sampling music; he met with Steve Clisby from a successful band called the American Gypsies in the early 80's. Clisby was intrigued by the way Voorn put together a production based upon samples; when an agreement was established, Voorn worked together with Clisby, who would teach Orlando chord structures. This was a major step for Orlando as it changed his view on productions tremendously. As he no longer needed to use only samples but he could in fact create a track/composition from playing it all with keys, bass lines, piano's etc.

Subsequently Voorn debuted as Frequency on Lower East Side Records with titles such as "Where is Your Evidence”, “Kiss the Sky” and “Industrial Metal”.
As a result of these tracks, Voorn was introduced to Juan Atkins and they later started to collaborate & produce tracks together at Voorn's home studio. Atkins & Voorn worked extraordinarily well together and Juan taught Orlando how to merge the sounds as well as how to change the standards of conventional productions.
Soon after they would join forces and produce the well know track called "Game One" which became a classic record on Atkin’s label Metroplex and later it reprised on Voorn’s imprint Nightvision double CD compilation in 1996.

In that same time span, Voorn met Blake Baxter and collaborated for the infamous ESP Records and under the alias The Ghetto Brothers they made 2 EP's with timeless classics as "Ghetto Disco" and" Ghetto Blues".

Voorn also did recordings for legendary Kevin Saunderson’s KMS, using his alias Fix, with which he created a dancefloor destroyer track called "Flash", which remains in many DJ's crates at this moment. “Flash” became a hit in the Detroit clubs before the record had broken out internationally. Voorn has a well know history of working with Detroits originator’s including Derrick May's imprint Fragile under his alias Complex.

To not forget he released on some other great imprints around such as R&S, Third Ear, Rush Hour, Leo Anibaldi’s Cannibald Records, DJ Hell’s Internation Deejay Gigolo Records, Suspected and many more.

Voorn is a multifaceted artist: he has used many names throughout his career in order to present various styles of music without limitation to producing only techno. You could easily say that he is an incredible artist who got the Midas touch and he can do everything without boundaries, making it shine.
