Things are clearer now for Meanjin (Brisbane) producer and Pocketmoth co-founder Itrat Memon, who in the 3 years since his last EP release, worked tirelessly to reconfigure his creative practice. A first glimpse came in May 2021 when he relinquished former alias ‘Black Mannequin’ in favour of the name Meanjin’s dance music community fondly knows him by: Iti.

This signalled an intention to break free from former personal narratives, and instead view releases as extensions of the transient self from irretrievable moments in time. In other words, a firm self-commitment to finish music while at its most visceral peak, for as time passes, so too does one’s emotional connection to its birthing point. Acknowledging this impermanence, the ‘Curvework’ series houses tracks conceived and finished within ephemeral moments of creativity.

Vol. 1: As Time Passes A fast-paced 2-track, 2-remix EP, suited to a variety of dance floor contexts. The EP begins with Saba (Urdu; wind, breeze): a swift, airy groover, fusing the percussive textures of Iti’s Pakistani heritage with soft, breathing pads and his signature vocal sampling. This is followed by the EP’s title track, ‘As Time Passes’; a high-energy, broken-beat number. Here, more of Iti’s hypnotic vocal chops weave cleverly with thundering rhythm and tabla sections.

The EP’s remixes come from two of Meanjin’s most exciting and active producers; Axon Growth Factor and Nora Drum.

Off the back of his stunning release ‘Cytokenisis’ on Naarm (Melbourne) label The Space Between Us, Axon Growth Factor continues his excellent form with a stripped-back electro remix of ‘Saba’, injecting the intricate drum programming he is rapidly becoming known for.

Nora Drum, having released an equally stunning EP in collaboration with Lithe in September, continues his exploration of Drum and Bass with an immense take on ‘As Time Passes’, featuring a clinical rhythm section and textural atmosphere. Hats off.

Breaks, bass, dub, techno, rave, acid, electro and Eurodance; 'Transnaturel' transcends genre. The first-ever compilation on Nehza Records is a mixed pot of sounds, and together they collide to highlight the beauty of nature and where we, as humans, stand with our environment in 2022.

Welsh producer Aloka injects a dose of gritty breakbeat on 'Digeridoo' and cites the cultural practices of native tribes as the source of his inspiration. The track is a take on people in power quashing native communities and, as a result, dissolving the connection between human beings.

CRUDE Premiere: D-Nite - Drifting [Fly By Night]

DJ Different dons his Terra Form alias as he begins his journey in "Entering The Void" on CYBERDOME; exploring phat electro bass-lines and party-starting ghettotech energy with its crosshairs fixated firmly on the club environment.

Born and raised in the culturally rich city of Malmö, the Swedish producer has previously released on London based label Deeply Cultured, Distant Hawaii, Mood Of Era, 1Ø PILLS MATE and Traxx Underground, spanning atmospheric techno, ethereal breakbeat and chunky electro.

"Ultrasonic" is an ear-wriggling cut of stripped-back psychedelia. As David Holmes would say, "all the best electronic music tracks are made up of only a few components". Here, typical electro synth stabs, robotic vocal sampling and sparse precision allows the track room to breathe, whilst maintaining a deep and funk-driven groove.

"Ghettotech" sounds how you would expect it to; pounding kicks, frantic atmospherics and lairy screw-face hype combine on a certified fire-starter, before "Exiting The Void" introduces itself on a footwork vibe that evolves into a sequence of interstellar-dungeon dub-electro.

"The Rise of the Slavs" takes its inspiration from the diverse group of tribes who lived in Central and Eastern Europe in the 6th to 10th centuries, establishing the foundations for the Slavic nations; it's marching rhythm beaming historical context into 21st Century dance music.

Not sure why the debut solo EP by DJ FUCKS HIMSELF is called Weisse Weste, which is a German metaphor for having a clear conscience, being very innocent. Cause Fucks for sure goes deep down and dirty with this one. Sensual pitched up vocals meet nasty drums and by wisely using just the right amount of Dub effects he gives this track a very organic vibe while keeping it sharp enough to shave the rave.

What Is Zero?

Belfast’s Robin Wylie has long been twisting up heavy, analogue bass sounds, winning the ears of the likes of David Holmes along the way. After debuting on Ritual Poison with the swirling, hazy breaks of ‘St Paul’s’ on last year’s ‘Pharmakon’ compilation, he arrives full force with four-tracker ‘What is Zero?’.

Build around booming subs, bubbling acid and ecstatic female vocals, the title track highlights Wylie’s knack for dancefloor fusion, peak time electro seeped in subtle rave flavours. ‘Pulse Track’ draws inspiration from somewhere between 90s techno and bleep, adding a modern percussive drive and bass weight. The electro-breaks of ‘Shadows In The Sunlight’ serves up a journey of tension and release, building then breaking in waves of 303. And ‘Kid Dynamite’ earns its title, low end exploding under heavy breakbeat house riding crunchy acid, whoops and warping effects.

Artwork come from label favourite Alec Jagodzinski, whose 2000 AD-inspired imagery accentuates the EP’s sonic evocation of resistance to an encroaching dystopian future.
