Say-So

Mountains. We all have to to climb. Sometimes we stumble. sometimes we fall. But the truth is in this life you keep going no matter what. It's either that or fold and it aint gonna happen. Behind every smiling face lies problems and issues that no one else knows anything about because everyone wears a mask. But a leopard CAN change its spots...if it calls at the right place, which is one of positivity. The Story: A girl and a boy meet one summer in the park where they immediately fall in love.  Jokingly they suggest that they'll meet again on this same day but twenty years in the future. Pretty funny, right?
Well now that day has come. What if he was serious? Maybe we really are supposed to meet...... Well, there's only one way to find out, right?
I guess I'm traveling now......

Bill's Note: True to form Melissa nailed this vocal performance in two takes! The high "classical" sounding parts were mic'd overhead. That type of vocal performance causes a lot of interference with a close mic'd setup due to the volume, mass of air and sound that is moved.
In this recording I tried to emphasize also Will's cymbal work which to me adds to the magical nature of this piece. 
The first seven notes are given to us by Serj Tankian and his "7 Note Challenge". That motif then returns to represent the passage of time. The chord progression is loosely based upon Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do" which really seems fitting considering the subject matter.
The place is "The Point" - a park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where the Allegheny and the Monongahela meet to form the grand Ohio River ...it is a place that I believe is magical and so I created this story.

Jon Randall, one of the song's co-writers, had just divorced from country singer Lorrie Morgan before writing this song. In addition, he had lost a record deal, and had not been able to find a songwriting contract either. He found himself drinking whiskey regularly, and pursuing sexual desires. After seeing the condition that Randall was in at the time, his manager told him, "Hey man, every now and then you've got to put a bottle to your head and pull the trigger." 
Randall then wrote down that line, and decided to use it in a song. He then met Bill Anderson and began to write the song, which eventually made its way to Paisley. Randall himself also included a version on his 2005 album Walking Among the Living.
