Now for something a little different... as soon as I heard exquisite Mountain Man (@mountain-man-official) song "Rang Tang Ring Toon" I knew it was begging for a disco-inspired mid-tempo dance remix. The punchy drums and wailing sax came very naturally to my mind and I'm pleased to say I think it worked out well. After listening to a lot of @soulwaxofficial remixes over summer I'd be silly not to acknowledge the influence. I'm not sure how this remix might make its way into a Droptor Seuss set but let's see what happens in 2021. 

Side Note: I didn't realise at the time I was putting this track together that one third of Mountain Man is @sylvanesso's Amelia Meath - SE's album "Free Love" was also on high rotation for me over the Australian summer.

Intelligent Life - A Progressive House Mix

After many cancelled gigs and music generally being on the backburner, a few months ago I returned to my studio and began working on a new track. What started off as a remix, then a random MIDI bassline turned into a 3 month journey of deep exploration of sound, mixing and creative expression. The resulting track, an eerie deep house track driven by busting santur riffs, soothing melancholy vocals and fast paced percussion loops. For my typically more downtempo style, this is a faster paced experience and one that I found my DJ sets generally missing out on. I hope you enjoy the result and please feel more than welcome to download it for your own DJ library.

Canyons

This Track was inspired by and named after “The Green Comet” that passed through our solar system this past year.

The Green Comet, otherwise known as C/2022 E3 (ZTF) , made its last close approach to Earth 50,000 years ago when mastodons and woolly mammoths roamed the earth, and great swaths of glaciers covered portions of North America and northern Europe, as the planet went through its last ice age. 

This ghostly green comet, spotted last year by Bryce Bolin and Frank Masci, two modern-day astronomers working at Palomar in southern California, made a very close approach to Earth on Feb. 1 and 2, 2023,  just 43 million km (27 million mi.) from our planet and was visible to the naked eye as a bright green smudge in the northern hemisphere’s skies.

This was a special comet. It was approaching the solar system from above, at a 90-degree angle, as if it were falling down from the sky. This indicated it was not coming from the Kuiper Belt—a band of icy, rocky, comet-like bodies that circles the solar system outside the orbit of Neptune—which sends us comets that fly flat in the plane of the solar system. 

Rather, it was coming from the Oort cloud, a sphere of similar objects that surrounds the solar system much more distantly, with its outer fringes reaching up to two light years away. (It was the trajectory of the comet that also allowed Bolin and Masci to determine its 50,000-year orbital period.)

Then, too there is the comet’s striking brightness and color. Comets flare green when they carry diatomic carbon—two-atom carbon molecules—which reacts with the sun’s outgassing particles, the solar wind. Many comets possess diatomic carbon, but few also approach the sun as closely as C/2022 E3 (ZTF), 

C/2022 E3 (ZTF) also has two tails, rather than the single tail characteristic of most comets. The more common tail is made of dust and ice interacting with the solar wind. The less common second tail is called the ion tail and is made of ionized carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen molecules that some comet bodies carry. “The ion tail interacts with charged particles in the solar wind and is pushed in the opposite direction from the sun, along the flow of the wind,” says Bolin.

The Green Comet reminds us that there is always more to be discovered and we are just a drop of water in an endless sea of possibilities, and it instills a sense of awe and wonder.

Presenting my ~8 minute remix of Fela Kuti's No Agreement. Starting in true spirit to the original it allows for the keyboard and sax solos while blending modern bass, kick and a crazy amount of stereo mixed percussion until spinning out into a drop, build and then finishing with a more modern bass filled and organ oozing finish. More background on the story behind the work below.

I first heard Fela Kuti's music when I was living in Mozambique. A German traveler passing through the small city of Chimoio (where I was working) shared a hard drive of music with me. The highlight among the vast collection was Fela's infective afrobeat - a weird and wonderful form of hot jazz that was popularized in Africa in the 1970s. Today it's a genre in itself and Fela is the godfather. When No Agreement came on the radio some years ago, I was absolutely hooked from the beginning. I always dreamed of using my production skills to turn it into something I could play on a dancefloor. This was not easy. A live recording from 1970s, I had to painstakingly warp the track to a consistent BPM, manually EQ each part out, figure out how to maintaint he spirit of the chaotic live jam vibe in the original into a more structured track. And of course I couldn't help but add in more percussion than anyone should. This remix has been a project of mine for the last 2+ years and I've learned so much about production in the process. It still doesn't sound perfect to my ears but I'm throwing in the towel in the interests of moving forward with new projects. I hope you enjoy the track and if so I urge you to find more amazing Fela Kuti music. He was an incredible once in a generation musician. Enjoy!

The first release from Rob Garza's Magnetic Moon imprint, Palace of Mirrors features six tracks inspired by the fields of Oaxaca, Mexico, travels through Mumbai, and the transcendentalism that follows.

“Re Mana” features Mumbai-based vocalist Vasuda Sharma hailing who Rob connected with through Andy MacKaye of Bombay Dub Orchestra during his travels in India. Her voice is ethereal and otherworldly, floating on in with a dark-tech house groove. The first remix features Rob’s fellow DC natives, Nadastrom, keeping it deep and sexy with the second remix by UK-based Psychemagik offering up a stellar tripped out floor-groover. “Palace of Mirrors” also features Vasuda, bringing a beautiful and lush transcendental house vibe while the fields of Oaxaca-inspired “Blue Agave Fields” captures the deep bass of a desert-like dub atmosphere. “Hide the Sunlight” features the voice of Tenerife resident Sutja Gutiérrez, a friend met virtually after a heartfelt message online - a true testament to the kismet of the modern music industry. Sutja’s voice and the track’s instrumentation will have you vibing out with their 90’s underpinnings, rounding out this inaugural offering from Magnetic Moon.

The Parkcast Volume 29 - Guest: Junior Brown

A mashup of @populous "Alala" and @elpeche edit of Edu Lobo's "Lero" with some of my own blues and bounce twists thrown in for good measure. I got the inspiration for this mashup a while back but recently saw @moontideaus play Alala at Elements Festival and realised Flight of the Conchords' "She's So Hot" could also be in the mix. In the end it's a subtle feature from the NZ duo but I'm happy with it.
