The neon-lit allure of Miami at night is an aesthetic hard-coded into frazzled eye sockets, whether you grew up enthralled by Tony Montana’s rise to power or fell into the ultra-violent fantasy of GTA. Something about the clamouring Florida heat drives people to excess, whether they’re players in a fiction or real-lifers living like movie stars. It’s a visceral aesthetic which enchants the world over — just one lurid notch in the bedpost of American cultural colonialism — and it shows up the sullied reality of ‘the dream’ even in the dimmest of lighting.

Brodinski didn’t have to soak up this pervasive inspiration vicariously through mixed media — bedded into Miami for a summer, he wrote The Sinkhole while contemplating the knotty character of this art deco wonderland once the sun goes down. The French producer has lived many lives in many places throughout his career, touching on chart-baiting electro and late 00s techno as a breakout superstar in the superclub era. Evil World saw him working with a heavyweight cast of rappers and more recently he’s linked up with the likes of Louisahhh and Low Jack to indulge a more gutter-dwelling flip on his upfront, flamboyant strain of haute-club-couture.

The Sinkhole evokes broad, palm-lined boulevards cast in the moon’s milky glow in every haunting pad — a seductive siren song calling out over Biscayne Bay. But threat is never far away, spelt out in every bludgeoning, bloated slap of bass, in every quivering string line cast in a minor chord, in the needlepoint detail slithering and shivering around the rhythm section. Without resorting to the lowest common denominator of speed, Brodinski finds his own way to spell out tension, directing a bewitching set piece that beguiles as it ensnares, promising you the depraved but oh-so elegant thrill ride your heart so deeply, ashamedly desires.

Scorpio Red is pleased to announce the release of Zeynep Ağcabay’s second EP, out on the 7th June 2024.

The Turkish born, London based artist’s 4-track release ‘Memories from the Future’ re-frames memory as a non-linear plane of time: visions and sounds collected from “memories” that are yet to occur but feel already lived. An effort to merge her self-titled spiritual folk project with her former ambient pop moniker mea0u, ‘Memories From The Future’ evokes a cyclical, nostalgic and trippy dream sequence. Distorted vocals, a nod to heavy exposure to Western pop influences, meet with samples of Turkish Ney flute and percussion reminiscent of "home".

Liliane Chlela’s ‘Anatomy of A Jerk’ reflects on sonic storytelling, experimenting with the compositional frameworks under which it operates. The Beirut-born producer, dj and performer stands at the forefront of the independent electronic music scene in Lebanon, with a reputation for shattering expectations with her live auditory soundscapes, exploring improvisation and the manipulation of sounds from wide-ranging musical genres. Her fifth record (and first on Infinite Machine) steers further into such territory, warping manic synth patterns into percussive motifs, cutting abruptly in and out of poignant melodic interludes. Chlela’s sonic narratives begin, repeat, break apart, disappear and fold into themselves, encouraging contemplation of the compositional elements–the anatomies–that constitute them.

Each track is a meticulous excursion–a melange of varied constituents carefully and uncannily arranged, sometimes coalescing, often deliberately breaking away from the song’s anticipated structure to bring forth unexpected moments of beauty. The first arrangement, ‘Bison’, is exemplary of this, where high intensity metallic stomps, clangs and stabs form a rhythm that is frequently interrupted and broken apart, sometimes by evasive melodies that tease the listener before fading.

‘Bza2’ and ‘Friendly Fire’ move further into the discomfort of unanticipated moments and interruptions. In each, haunting strings and synth-pad melodies start and stop, floating and pausing over jitters and stutters of mechanical percussion. Other tracks move further into the atmospheric, creating dramatic, theatrical soundscapes. ‘Third Fraud’ leans into this approach, where string progressions and cinematic drums tell a story that is less affronting.

Like previous works of Chlela, these eight compositions reach into a difficult space that is only rewarded with careful attention, patience and openness. The arrangements are invigorated by the distinct nature of the compositional fragments; seemingly divergent patches, sounds and rhythms are paired across an eccentric timeline, providing ample opportunities for listeners to relish in the sudden jerk of the unforeseen.

Prolific NY-based producer Jetty makes his All Centre debut on ACEN062. Jetty’s tracks from his excellent series of self-released EPs will be familiar to those who have attended AC parties over the years, and on Feet Don’t Fail Me Now he delivers three more singularly infective, hard-hitting club cuts.

The Bag Remix opens in his signature style with an earworm vocal hook and nimble percussion, before bringing in a bone-quaking bass over a thumping kick pattern. The vocal cut re-emerges before the bassline pummels with renewed vigor, and Jetty pulls all the elements together in a flying final third.

Lost in Regionals is the most introspective of the three cuts, with wistful melodic lines and deep, emotive vocal chops. The track brings a dancefloor punch too, with a tough syncopated beat punctuated by rolling ama basslines and deft inflections of Jersey club samples.

On Sunny’s, a sub-zero oscillating bassline underpins a heavy club excursion. The track brims with rhythmic intensity, bass hits pinging between beats and frantic vocals scrambling over the drum tracks. A bracing half-speed switch-up.brings the track to another level, rolling to the finish with low-frequency weightiness.

Feet Don’t Fail Me Now is available across all digital platforms from August 16th.
