A Berlin resident since 2004, Mareena developed her musical career in interaction with the steady advancement of techno and house in Berlin after moving from Rostock / East Germany. As a result of her experiences within the diverse musical channels of Berlin she has developed her own distinct sound. This development naturally led to DJ gigs in many notable underground clubs such as About Blank, Berghain, Griessmühle and eventually a residency at Tresor. Her influences range far and wide, including anything from Detroit and Chicago acid to the more hypnotic take on dub, ambient, and techno. Throughout the years she has performed extensively both locally and internationally, accomplishing the rare feat of earning a reputation solely as a DJ
and curator.

As one of the curators of the New Faces night at Tresor as well as her UNRUSH
podcast, interview and event series, she has continuously crafted new conduits for both established and emerging artists to break down musical barriers and transform the world around them. As a DJ she is a chameleon, carefully stitching together immaculate and immersive sound landscapes for any occasion. Whether she is playing peak time, warm up, or after hour, her sound reveals an intelligent eclecticism fused with bold elements of surprise that exemplify her rich knowledge of electronic
music culture.

His calm demeanour belies the massive amounts of energy he creates in his highly technical DJ sets, and the ethereal beauty of his live performances with many top-flight DJs swearing by his output, dropping his tracks relentlessly throughout their sets. He grew up in the 80’s listening mostly to soul, RnB and hip-hop. He knew he wanted to follow a musical path, but because he couldn’t rap or sing and was more interested in the beats he decided to become a DJ. His early inspiration came from amazing artists like Stevie Wonder, Prince, Michael Jackson, Herby Handcock and Public Enemy. after becoming a DJ and discovering so many more styles of music out there, especially techno, it was Jeff Mills, Claude Young, DJ Stingray and The Horrorist to name a few that held his awe.

Interview:

1.  You were just picked up by Juan Atkins’ Metroplex label for a 12″ EP recently, Shifting Forward as it’s titled. Congratulations on that! Can you tell us a little about the three original tracks, and their compositions? How did you manage to construct such classic sounding Metroplex material?

Thank you, The tracks I came up with were just the idea of what Metroplex is to me. I was thinking they need to be straight forward stripped down minimal funk with a nice edge to them. I wanted to pay homage to the old but also try to keep it more modern. I think I achieved it haha…Aubrey Saei’s remix of Shifting Forward is dope If I must say so myself.

2.  Columbus, Ohio is where you call home. How would you say your artist presence is received there?

I have to say my Columbus people show me mad respect and love. They are proud of my accomplishments. It says a lot when someone goes out of there way to throw a Release party for you without me even saying anything. Thank you “Squared” and all of my friends for the love and support, you rock ! :)

3.  What is it about the city that you love, and what inspirations from your surroundings do you apply to your music, if any?

Columbus is a great city to live in with out the crazy problems of a larger city. Great diversity of people, food and culture. My inspirations come from my friends and true brother Kevin Kennedy aka FBK. He pushes me like no other…listen to his tracks they are dope without a doubt.

4.  In terms of workflow, in your opinion what are the key elements of nailing a quality track for the dance floor?

My work flow? I just do what I want plan and simple. If I make a loop and it gives me goose bumps its a go from there. Then I let someone hear or I post to Soundcloud to see if anyone else if feeling it like I am, or am I just crazy?… haha!

5.  Any other Plural activity coming up we should know about?

I have a few digital release coming in 2015 : UKR, Servo Tracks, Timeslice Recordings, Ditekt
There will be some remixes coming out on Vinyl 2015 also…..TBA
Hopefully will get travel and play more cities and countries 2015 :)

Hailing from Springfield, Illinois, Justin Cudmore has over the years found himself situated near or in some of electronic music's most influential cities. Making regular trips to Chicago for SmartBar whilst at university a short distance away, Cudmore then  packed up for New York, a move he initially thought wasn't for him. Since relocating to the city in 2011, Cudmore eventually found himself forming a close-knit friendship between fellow DJs Mike Servito and Gunnar Haslam, a Brooklyn trifecta that's since turned to b2b DJing as a collective under the name 'Hot Mix'. As a steadily rising producer the last few years, Cudmore has release a steady handful of records on labels such as Honey Soundsystem's label offshoot HNYTRAX as well as The Bunker New York and Interdimensional Transmissions. His music and style of DJing, a combination of high energy acid lines and addictive party techno, has elevated him and his 'Hot Mix' peers as sure party  starters. We caught up with Justin to discuss his early cassette listening, his regular visits to Chicago for SmartBar and how he ended up DJing in a collective trio with Mike Servito and Gunnar Haslam.
