This mix has been provided by Dissonance from Arizona. He has been slaying the decks since the late 90's. Playing anything from Hip Hop, Deep Dubstep, to Drum and Bass and Jungle. He has had the pleasure of playing at Respect in LA, SMASH Arcata, and Big Horn in Las Vegas. Opening for such talent as Bailey and Eddy Woo to name a few. Enjoy the mix.

Featured Friday #006 ***Dissonance***

Javier Quiles aka Negative Concept was born in 1996 on the island of Puerto Rico where he grew up. As a child he was always enamored by faster rhythms and darker sound aesthetics. His obsession began at 7 years old when he was given his first walkman CD player and his uncle forgot a Nirvana CD at his dad's house. A few years go by and suddenly the commercial success of dubstep soon reaches Puerto Rico with the arrival of the EDC music festival and later the inauguration of hot 102 radio. Soon a few drum and bass artists become part of Javier's regular listening schedule without him even knowing the words "drum and bass". Fast forward a few years and it's October 2013. Javier goes to his first drum and bass party the weekend after his 18th birthday at the beloved One Bar and discovers an underground scene beyond his wildest dreams. There he meets the bass family and sees local djs like Aeon Basshead, Dj Ghetto, and Velvet Effects. After that night he started going to events every week and his obsession with dnb grew stronger every day. Going from liquid to jungle and eventually to the love of his life...neurofunk. It wasn't much after that that he started learning to mix House music with friends in his college town of Mayaguez and eventually got his own mixer when he moved back to San Juan. In the years that followed, Javier started playing at One Bar and making his way around the scene as a drum and bass dj (back then known as LD-50) and a promoter up until the club closed after hurricane Maria in 2017. After that, he fought to keep the local scene alive and consistent and occasionally collaborated with QVLQV on local and international projects. As of 2020 he lives in Colorado and aspires to promote drum and bass culture across all cities.

Featured Friday #007 ***Negative Concept***

This week we’re proud to bring you a mix all the way from the Taranaki region of Kiwi land, New Zealand by “Same”. He provided us with a solid liquid mix, flowing with plenty of deep rollers and uplifting, vibrant tracks. A couple of us from the DnB Proper family had the pleasure of meeting Same and a couple other Kiwi‘s while they were on holiday in Denver a couple years back. What a great group of people and a very talented DJ. Enjoy the mix!!!

Featured Friday #008 ***Same***

This Featured Friday Mix comes to us from "Who Killed Bill". Born & raised in Metro Detroit, Bill became a dj during 2016 and been in love with it since. He was brought into the Dubstep/ Riddim side of the scene, so that's always been his specialty on the decks. But he has been around to be able to experience all different parts pf the EDM scene. He has always liked Drum & Bass, but he is brand new to it, especially when it comes to mixing that genre. What he has to offer everyone right now is a Drum & Bass set with multiple sub genres within it. He hopes everyone enjoys the art he put together. Enjoy the mix!!!

Featured Friday #009 ***Who Killed Bill***

Eric Salazar played his first instrument, the autoharp, as a very small child. By 1985 he joined a break dancing troop and had the chance to pop-lock. Some of the break dancing tapes he listened to were instrumental and those pieces inspired him to search for a sound that was rhythm heavy and lacking in vocals.  He was sated by the recordings of Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream and The Art of Noise.

 

 By 1990, he got his hands on an Ensoniq EPS-16+ sampling workstation and proceeded to make his own very bad music. The 1990s would also bring about rave culture and with it some of his favorite artists such as 808 State, Orbital, Sven Vath, Enigma, The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, etc. Eric would try to emulate these artists and by 1997, he had actually started making some acceptable music, using a Power PC, Emagic Logic Audio and the Ensoniq. He sought to combine all his influences under the name Emptyhead and his efforts culminated in a CD EP entitled "Penitence" which he burned up on his computer that was then hand labeled to be sold in local record shops. The following year he did the same thing with a CD EP etitled "Voluptuous".

 

Eric felt it was good enough, so he sent it out and a copy ended up in the offices of Peter Gabriel’s record label, Real World.  The folks at Real World listened to it in the office while writing memos.

 

Still it took until the following year and remixes for New Vision Recordings and other labels in the UK to solidify his reputation. By 2000, Mercedes Automotive, Smirnoff Vodka and other companies licensed Eric's music to promote their products. After this success, Eric launched “New Vision America”, his own record label in 2002. After three singles were released, the label died a quiet death.  Despite this failure, Eric pressed on and would go on to score the best-selling video game, "Belle's Beauty Boutique” and by 2008, Eric had released the full length CD, entitled, "ES: When I was Emptyhead - 1997-2007."

 

The CD would garner airplay in major markets and commendations from the press, including publications like Knowledge and XLR8R. By 2010 Eric was riding this success and started remixing the works of major artists such as The B-52s, Summer Channel and Information Society. 

 

Mental illness took hold in 2012 and as therapy he started producing music influenced by the drum & bass scene and a leftfield sound.  Eric’s efforts culminated in the release of future albums “170.1”, “170.2” and “170.3” in the years 2019 and beyond under the name Phidippus.  His new efforts are being warmly accepted and considered new kind of expression

 

Eric has experienced the rise of electronic music and was glad to be a part of those few who created it and paved the way for new sounds and expression. Eric’s music has been heard on radio, on television and in the clubs and he feels humbled to have found his music appreciated in so many ways.
