Nicole has returned to Drumcode all guns blazing with her new ‘Bittersweet EP’. The A- side ‘I Know Where I’ve Been’, is a deep rolling techno machine that uses a constant building percussion loop that eventually explodes into some serious funky signature Moudaber techno! ‘Bittersweet’ is a techno belter that uses a hypnotic synth rhythm that will take the listener into another world. The repetitive claps induce a flurry of energy and excitement whilst supported by the crisp highs.

Torsten Kanzler Mayday Set 2014

Adam Beyer’s new EP titled ‘Teach Me’ is an accomplished piece of work that highlights Beyer's year thus far. 'Teach Me' starts with some eerie chords before the distinctive vocal kick in and the track drops into a rumbling techno track. ‘Darlek’ uses rhythmic beeps and huge synth stab to create a funky rhythm before the atmospheric pads create a beautiful setting for this incredible techno track. ‘Stop Talking’ is a deeper offering from Beyer using weird and unusual noises to create and interesting piece of work that is helped along by the throbbing bass underlying in the track. ‘Spaceman’ uses a rhythmic vocal, percussion and sub bass to turn this track into a funky techno piece.

Alan Fitzpatrick is back with a three-track EP that encapsulates what Alan’s Drumcode sound is all about. Hard-hitting drums that fire down onto the dance floor like cannon balls. Check! Intense key patterns that are as twisted as they are uplifting. Check! Beautiful melodies that seamlessly interlock with each element. Check! Big-sounding, infectious grooves and killer hooks generously sprinkled with the infamous Fitzpatrick magic over the top. CHECK! In short, this EP is everything we have come to expect from Alan over his long history with Drumcode (this is his 10th EP as a solo artist!), but still his sound remains fresh and super-charged for 2014.

Luigi Madonna returns to Drumcode a year after his superb single ‘Primo’ using familiar hooks, huge stabs and monstrous drums that storm across the dance floor which, are common with Mr Madonna. The hard hitting raw vibe of this EP gives Luigi an edge, with fluttering high’s and saturated lows, Luigi’s tracks are a mainstay in all DJ sets. Mr McKay is back on Drumcode with an EP that is very close to home, titled ‘Glasgow Safari’. Harvey has blended his synonymous synth stabs and vocal hooks together and has created another outstanding EP. The drums are fat and chunky as always and allow Harvey’s ideas to flow effortlessly over a solid foundation. The smooth use of dynamic throughout Harvey’s tracks also create impressive drops to add to another exceptional EP from Harvey.

Victor Calderone has stepped up for his first solo release on Drumcode with his two track single, ‘Burden’. Featuring two energetic tracks, ‘Skin’ and ‘Burden’, Victor has used effected vocals to create funky rhythms over the top of some steaming kick drums. The synth stabs lend themselves well across this EP particularly in ‘Burden’ where they really augment the flow of the track. The use of percussion phrases throughout both tracks on the single also reinforces the grooves and adds character to create a distinctive sound that keeps the single fresh and exciting.

The second installment of re Interpretations form Slams latest, critically acclaimed album Reverse Proceed sees Soma look to yet more highly regarded Techno artists to provide their reimaginings of their favourite tracks from Reverse Proceed. Long time Soma collaborator Gary Beck makes a welcome return to the label alongside fellow Scottish upstarts Clouds and finally Dutch Techno wizard, Jeroen Search. Each brings their inimitable style to the project.

Gary Beck steps up first with his take on Catacoustics. His fiery brand of looped out Techno take the already tough Catacoustics into another realm. Gary comes out, all guns blazing using the original hook to great effect as it trips out over his ferocious kicks, thundering percussion and powerful dance floor groove.

Somehow we are already at number ten in our podcast series. This one is yet another special offering and it comes from Ø [Phase], aka Ashley Burchett. Burchett is a UK techno legend who has been doing his do for the past fifteen years. He has released most of his work on the Token label and it includes immersive full lengths such as Frames of Reference as well as tens of hugely consistent and always excellent EPs that go far beyond simple floor fodder. Atmosphere and tension, hypnotism and efficient sonic economy all characterise his singular output. 

Clocking in at just under 75 minutes, this one is for the heads: it starts off in supple, subliminal techno territory with distant drones and rubbery synths working you into a hypnotic state and then gradually unfolds through many different textures. Always rooted to a seductive and repetitive kick, this is a masterclass in control and restraint, in tension and balance, and it will keep you locked for the thrilling duration as a result.
