Victor Ruiz’s VOLTA imprint heads into 2024 in the same vein as it ended 2023, with an unrelenting flow of top-quality releases, the next from Wehbba and label boss, Victor Ruiz. After their infamous b2b at Warehouse Project in December 2022, it was maybe a sign of things to come, and after not collaborating for almost 10 years, the duo found time in Sao Paulo, resulting in their next release ‘Stand’.
The title cut ‘Stand’ was made during lockdown, “It felt fast at the time, but then techno had a surge in faster bpm’s being played and released, so when I came back to the track 4 years later, it almost feels slow” says Wehbba. “I sent the track to Victor, and he added some drums and vocals that were perfect, but it wasn't until we played it out, that we realised what was missing”. Laced with enveloping acid and modulating analogue elements from early on, its ebb and flow of gripping peaks and troughs filled with expansive soundscapes, hooking vocals and riveting crescendos are the perfect precursors to its several gritty, sawing synth lead. “Now we are both in Lisbon, we got into the studio again and worked out the finer details and completed the track” adds Wehbba.
‘Silo’ completes the release with an appropriate amount of ‘boom’ throughout. Thumping kicks and subtle percussive drive lead the way along hollowed-out sub-bass and melancholic arps that expand further into the mix, giving rise to sharply rising synth lines and pulsating bass stabs. A progressively climbing roller with endless energy and loads of off-beat shuffle throughout, it perfectly caps off an impressive release.

Veerus strikes again with Algorythm, a standout release on Le Club. The track fuses catchy synths, a thunderous bassline, and a captivating vocal to create a magnetic club anthem. It's a surefire hit for techno peak-time sets.

‘Hypnosis’ was one of Drumcode’s most vital under-the-radar releases of 2019. Its creator, Veerus, returns to the mothership for another top-shelf offering.

The Italian’s career is a brilliant slow burner, releasing EPs sparingly over the course of his 14-year career. There’s a narrative quality to each track too, the artist reveling in a drama-laden call-and-response dynamic. All three cuts from his latest ‘System’ EP are made for big moments. The title track was created with Amsterdam’s holy rave cauldron the Gashouder in mind, and was completed by Veerus just a few days before ADE last year. Balancing on a knife’s edge between tension and euphoria, the track’s twisted synth lines sent an energy surge through the iconic venue.

UMEK is proud to present his debut collaboration with Spanish duo The YellowHeads who have released on many great labels ranging from Kraftek to We Are The Brave, and of course their own label Reload.

This collaboration with The YellowHeads is forthcoming on UMEK’s own label 1605, which has become a main outlet for the label owners own tracks, but he has also featured on other iconic imprints such as Intec, Filth On Acid and Tronic.

Alongside the original track titled “Driller” the release also includes a heavyweight remix pack featuring Teenage Mutants, Beico and Heerhorst.

All three of the remix artists have previously featured on 1605 in addition to other high-flying imprints such as Terminal M, Suara and Octopus. Beico is also known for being one half of the duo Beico & MT93.

The original mix of "Driller" opens the release with its thundering kick drum and pulsating bassline that is soon joined by the euphoric energy of the lead synth that takes flight in the epic breakdown. Reaching its crescendo when the percussion slams back in, the track lifts a gear and unleashes a new wave of intensity.

Teenage Mutants are first up on remix duty with an epic version that focuses on the melodic elements while ensuring that none of the original’s energy is lost in their cosmic techno rework.

In terms of its raw aggression and melodic focus, Beico’s version sits somewhere between the two previous tracks, as it keeps chunky elements from the original while also shining a spotlight on the exquisite melody of the lead synth.

Heerhorst closes out the release with a version that refines the original with a slightly more stripped back sound, that gives each of the parts room to breathe and intertwine, while the fast-flowing percussion rhythms fill the track with unstoppable forward momentum.
