Premiere: Talal - Always [Spectrum]

Sometimes you make two tracks that are worlds apart but work so well side by side as a single release. Such is the case with 'Dub Track' and 'Combustion' from Rob Hes and Steve Slight.

New to the label but impeccably well-versed in the game, the Dutch/Belgian friends have collaborated on Sudbeat and Selador in the past. Now they make their debut on Joris Voorn's Spectrum with two deliciously contrasting late night missives.

'Dub Track' takes us back to the early 2000s with its stripped back charm. Think DC10 and 6am sets by Sascha Dive or Silicone Soul; a bulldozer full of eerie tension made solely of kicks, subs and hypnotic synth washes.

'Combustion' meanwhile provides the ultimate flip. Masterful in its pace and sense of theatre, maximal in its high voltage pay-off, this one powers into life in a whole new way after the breakdown. A real level-booster of a track that lives up to its engine-like name, this will raise roofs, arenas and the stars in the open skies this festival season.

Worlds apart but the same beautiful universe. Rob Hes and Steve Slight have smashed an exceptional Spectrum debut right here.

Qui est tu ? 

Je m’appelle Alexandre Mendes, j’ai 30 ans, chef de rang de métier dans la restauration, passionnés de musique en tous genre et plus particulièrement de musique électronique. 

Tu joues quoi comme style de musique ? 

Je suis quelqu’un par définition de très éclectique, j’aime absolument écouter pleins de styles et a jouer dans le cadre des musiques électroniques c’est super vaste, je peux partir dans l’ambiant, la deep, la house, le break beat, la techno et même des fois des morceaux a sonorités plus disco. 

Décris ta musique en 3 mots : 

Percussive, Émotionnelle, Recherchée

Raconte-nous ton meilleur moment DJ ? 

Sans aucun doute ma première date à l’ancien Nordstern qui était a la Voltaplatz a Bâle en Suisse, j’ai rêvé de jouer dans ce club, j’ai poncé le dance floor et observé mes idoles dans le coin de la cabine jusqu’à avoir ce booking un jeudi soir ou la salle était pleine et tous mes amis sont venus me supporter ! c’est vraiment inoubliable et quand on connais la suite et ma résidence qui se concrétise quelques mois plus tard l’histoire est encore plus belle. 

Ce serait quoi ton endroit rêvé pour mixer ? 

Alors il y en a plusieurs, mais j’en donnerai trois : Le panorama bar à Berlin, Le lux à Lisbonne parce que le sound system est juste terrible et pour finir la Fabric à Londres car je sais que je pourrais partir dans des sentiers battus avec les anglais car ils consomment la musique d’une manière très différente et sont super ouverts d’esprit. ``

Quels sont tes projets en cours ? 

Actuellement je suis en train de définir une base d’album avec plusieurs styles que je m’impose mais c’est encore tout neuf et très flou.

Ton goal en 2023 ? 

Toujours continuer de faire vibrer mon audience et donner le meilleur de la musique qui me fait vibrer en essayant de toujours la sublimer en la mixant. 

Une anecdote de soirée à nous raconter ? 

Une qui m’a marqué parce que je me suis fait embarquer ma pochette de casque (que ma maman m’avait offerte) et c’est le manager de Loco Dice qui l’a pris en pensant que c’était a Loco Dice en rangeant son setup pendant que j’avais commencé à jouer après lui, c’était une soirée streetparade la veille de la street au supermarket à Zurich et si vous avez l’occasion d’aller y faire un tour ce club vaut vraiment le détour. 

Une track a nous faire découvrir ? 

Y en a tellement mais si je devais en envoyer la tout de suite ce serait le dernier EP de mon ami Loloman sur le label de Marco Bailey qui s’appelle MB Elektronics et un track de mon Oncle Jihell que j’aime beaucoup et qui marche super bien sur le dance floor qui s’appelle Broken Song Book sorti sur le label brique rouge ! Pour mes tracks a moi je balancerai ça en temps voulu mais j’ai un track gratuit sur mon SoundCloud qui s’appelle Star Ocean qui décris vraiment les deux années que je viens de passer, voici le lien :

Even just the name, Jumping Jack Frost, evokes a certain heritage within drum & bass circles; one that you’d be hard pressed to beat. Firstly there’s his legacy as a DJ, his friendship with Fabio and his gigs across the world. Then there’s his partnership with Bryan Gee in running the legendary V Recordings. Then there’s the success of his own Philly Blunt Records label and the fact that his name graces pretty much every large scale jungle flyer going. Jumping Jack Frost’s name is simply synonymous with the drum & bass sound. 

Starting off at what was then Fridge in Brixton, Frost’s multifarious influences and his command of music travelled far and wide with the explosion of jungle and drum & bass and placed him at the epicentre of a fast growing scene that’s still thriving today. And considering that we’re hosting a room at the annual Playaz Carnival Special in August called ’21 Years Of Jungle’, he’s undoubtedly one of the most perfect people we could ask to play. Ahead of the event and his appearance here in Room Two on Friday 22nd August, he’s kindly put together a rollicking hour long mix that affably displays why he’s still at the cutting edge of a scene that’s already spanned two decades and counting.

The idea for this mix came from a podcast I originally did for https://soundcloud.com/kamikaze-space-programme this is essentially an extended version of what I did for him. It's a mix up of very early influence records for me mostly from the 80's almost all of it pre House or Techno leaning pretty heavily on the old fashioned cut & paste mix style which was also a huge influence for me.

Pour la 6e édition de sa résidence Take Off, Azdin invite Alex Mendes sur Line Out !

DJ et producteur, Alex Mendes a développé très tôt sa passion pour la musique électronique en jouant au Nordstern (Bâle) et à Terrazzza (Zurich). En 2023, il fait preuve de maturité musicale en sortant sur Wefine Records et en créant son propre label, Yucatec. L’éclectisme prime avec sa musique portée par des synthétiseurs et une batterie qui se manifeste de manière vibrante sur « Space Like Me », son titre récemment signé sur Cod3 QR, le label de Laurent Garnier.

Alex se sent aussi bien en studio que sur scène. En matière de production, Alex gravite vers la musique entraînée par des synthétiseurs et des batteries, toujours tirée de sa propre imagination, lui permettant de raconter une histoire dans chacun de ses morceaux. C'est un véritable passionné de musique qui trouve son épanouissement dans le monde aux multiples facettes de la musique électronique. La passion contagieuse d'Alex pour la musique électronique est palpable. Il aspire à partager sa créativité avec le monde à travers des performances scéniques énergiques et des productions originales qui repoussent les limites de la musique électronique.

As an artist, Moiré finds a lot of inspiration in the tricks your mind can play on you. His name is a reference to the optical illusion that occurs when two patterns are overlaid just-so (as seen the cover of his debut album, Shelter). He’s frank about the influence of drugs on his work—one of his first tracks was simply called “Drugs,” and he recently told The Quietus that druggy disorientation is something he looks for in music. Unsurprisingly, his own records explore a murky, psychedelic space. Voices mutter in the fog, half melodies drift in and out of focus, and kick drums plod along like a raver headed home at dawn.
