The Brick Lane Sessions

In 2004-2005, Antoine Olivier (Tone Wreck, LEM)  and Paul Chivers (Ramjac) decided to host a regular jam session in Antoine's studio in the Truman Brewery on Brick Lane in East London.
For about a year, on the last Sunday of every month, a very eclectic and experimentative bunch of electronic and acoustic musicians would gather for a few hours and improvise. 
They were perfectly informal sessions with no rules nor leader. Every one would find their natural place, sometimes providing a background for others or taking some kind of lead. It was all very organic and free. 
Usually Paul would lay down a rhythmic base by live tweaking drum machines and/or playing acoustic percussion as well as any other instrument laying about, while Antoine would play his collection of analog synths and a fully loaded sampler, while mixing and using effects straight to stereo DAT. 
The guests, who would number between 4 and 8, contributed what they felt like. After a little while the energies would start to line up and a completely unexpected sound would emerge. It was time to press the record button on the DAT and let it unfold. 
Later, Paul and Antoine would edit those sessions into some kind of musical forms which are presented here. 
It was also a great social gathering where like-minded people would merge their energies and talents, listen back, and chill out before having another go. London was such a creative and fertile ground for experimentation of all kinds, and Brick Lane was where so many talented and inspired musicians converged.

DJ Soundar is a deejay, producer & Asian underground promoter on the French urban electronic music scene. He mixes cutting-edge, futuristic, nu-skool, eastern electronic music influenced by dub, dubstep, DnB, breakbeat, jungle, reggae and producing music with a passion & integrity which delivers a thought provoking conscious beats. 

He co-released the first volume of the compilation Asian Electronica, featuring many great artists from the Asian Underground scene, including: Asian Dub Foundation, UK Apache, Nitin Sawhney, Dr Das, Juttla & Visionary Underground, plus many respected artists from the French scene.

He is a long time co- producer with Jerome Klur and has also collaborated & worked on several remix & production projects for Dr Das, Asian Dub Foundation & the label/activists Indigenous Resistance (IR).

DSPSSSSD ("dispossessed") is the non-metric noise project of Aniruddha Das and sister project to "Dhangsha."

Das has taken the dub template of his previous work and mutilated it beyond recognition, with extreme minimalism and a particularly fractious approach to improvisation. He noticed he could create similar textures, pulses and energy to 'harsh noise,' but through a different route, namely that of a very aggressive take on 'granular synthesis.'  He has consciously re-calibrated the frequency range towards the bottom using heavy equalisation and low pass filters. As such, this music is designed to be performed on dub sound systems.
