Chinese born Tzusing has spent time in Chicago, Singapore and Taiwan and “this condition of dislocation” is what informs his music. It is a brash mix of industrial textures, harsh broken techno and subversive pop, trap and rap that is all blurred into one borderless offering that mirrors his own personal intersections. That music has come on LIES since 2011 and has given rise to standout LP 東方不敗 in 2017 that lead to shows on Boiler Room, Dommune and at Berghain. 

He was quiet on the release front in 2018, but has started this year with a new split EP on Pan, and now offers us a musical catch up ahead of him playing at Dekmantel Festival later in the year. Over the course of seventy minutes he jumps around restlessly, but somehow his sounds remain united by shiny metallic surfaces whether he’s mixing in Asian pop, whirring computer sounds in meltdown or horror-core. To us, it sounds like a futuristic soundtrack to some hyper urban metropolis that’s on the brink of collapse, and it’s genuinely compelling.

LAPSUS RADIO 260 - Borusiade

Up next in the series is a producer, dj and label boss who we've been keeping an eye on for some time now. She's channeled a path for herself, showcasing music across the spectrum of UK bass, techno and beyond.

As the founder of the Pressure Dome label she has been responsible for the release of music by the likes of Joseph Craven, Mish, Syz and more. As a producer she herself has also appeared on the label and has also released music via Be Told Lies and Sci-fact Records. Her music has been widely supported from a number of UK based artists and she has found herself at home amidst the evolving leftfield bass and techno scene which is as crucial and prominent as ever. 

We felt that now was the perfect opportunity to showcase her distinct talent in the booth and once lockdown is over we expect to be seeing a whole lot more of Yushh, an artist very much on the up.

That’s what we thought. The next couple of weeks, we will be asking one artist each week to deliver a mix build around a self-picked theme. Everyone is free to do what and how they feel like, and create something special for themselves and everyone who’s keen to give it a listen too. We hope you enjoy.

Who else would be better to kick off with than our dear friend Palms Trax? Not only has Jay been a favourite of ours for years, he has become probably everyone else’s as well. His contribution to In Focus is one we have listened to in one go: a “100% originals, features, edits and remixes by Joaquin Joe Claussell” mix, which resulted in a stirring and spiritual tribute to one of the all-time greats.

Palms Trax: “Over the last couple of years I’ve found his music to have this wonderful effect on a dancefloor where the whole place can feel like it’s levitating, so when lockdown hit I started going through his records at home and found it to be incredibly healing. Hopefully some people out there feel the same way!“.

Now here is a special treat for you on a fine lockdown Friday.

Dank Matter is a DJ from Glasgow with whom many will be familiar with, whether they know it or not.

For years Ian has worked tirelessly behind the scenes of electronic music curating record labels, hosting raves, managing venues and basically putting his heart and soul into making people dance in one way or another. 

As a DJ he draws for an exquisite assortment of high energy italo, disco, house and techno which has both enticed and uplifted dancefloors the whole world over.

Technically on point and one of the city's best in the booth this is a mix showcasing the vast and varied sound of crossover electronic music, all underpinned by a fun filled groove which has kept both Glasgow and the world moving for a long, long time.

Dank Matter: The 'Shine A Light On' Mix

This Was Belgium 1987-89 - 2 hours of New Beat favourites

New Beat was born and initially exploded in 1987, went supernova (in Belgium) in 1988 and then the formula morphed a bit and was declared dead in 1989. It was slow and initially all about the atmosphere with industrial strength beats - the main form of rhythmic propulsion being the pounding kick and heavy snare. It was often mainly instrumental and when there was lyrical content it often became more about slogans and giving commands - "Move Your Ass And Feel The Beat!", "Let There Be Brightness!", "Shout Out Loud!". While not really New Beat, it's no surprise Technotronic's "Pump Up Jam" was produced by a crew who had produced a ton of New Beat gems.

In 1989 one of New Beat's founders, Marc Grouls said "New Beat is atmosphere, beats, no lyrics, and sure as hell not commercial!!!!!" But, it was already too late. A zillion bandwagon jumpers had diluted the music and flooded the market with too many sub standard 12" singles. New Beat temple, the legendary Boccaccio nightclub, in Destelbergen, near Ghent, had been closed down and it looked like it was all over, but really, it was just the beginning. New Beat morphed into Hard Beat (many of the tracks on this mix are from the Hard Beat era) which quickly morphed into Belgian Rave, which was huge and hugely influential in the UK and is an often overlooked part of the DNA of UK Hardcore, and all that came after. Then from Ghent, R&S Records established itself as thee European Techno label and a huge wave of incredible Techno records emanated from it and many other mighty Belgian labels, but that is another story. 

New Beat arrived just as I first started DJing and I played a lot of it in my DJ sets and built up connections with several of the leading Belgian labels who would send me 12" singles so I had records nobody else here had any idea even existed. I would compile New Beat charts for the music paper The NME which may have given the impression there was a thriving New Beat scene in Scotland. The reality was very different; people here, many of whom would embrace the rave just a little while later never really took to it in a big way.

This mix is comprised of many of my personal favourites that I have loved since they came out (and two I missed at the time and only heard later). I think the tracks have aged like a fine wine, often sounding as good if not better today as they did then. There is definitely a faint whiff of fromage and a big dollop of stoopid in several of these tracks. Of course, it is not all about the cheese and many of these adhere to the "atmosphere, beats, no lyrics, and sure as hell not commercial" rule mentioned above. Some of the best programmed 303 Acid basslines ever made can be heard here along with transcendental hypno synths and those Belgian beats going on and on....! Slow and low, from under 100bpm up to 116, New Beat doesn't chug, it swings in a very distinct way. If you get to see any videos of Belgian clubs of the era, the way people moved to this music is incredible and so different to any dancing we see today.

Many of these tracks are made by the same people under various aliases, which will perhaps be audibly evident. Most of the names have been forgotten, if they were ever even known outside their native Belgium at all, but all are legends to me. 

This mix isn't any kind of attempt to tell the story of New Beat but rather a mix 33 of my favourite 12" singles from that era showing many of the various strains of the New Beat and Hard Beat sound. A lot of love went into this and I hope someone somewhere discovers this music for the first time and falls in love with it as I did way back when. This was Belgium!

There's a lot to be said for those who work behind the counter, those who sell records and carry an encyclopedic knowledge of music without necessarily shouting about it to all far flung corners of the world. Often they are the most sincere, most knowledgeable and most dependable of all having offered countless recommendations to customers and buyers for little reward but for their sheer love of music. 

Dj Skimask is an alias of Patrick Henderson, a London based collector and occasional disc jockey who works behind the counter at one of the most loved second hand record stores in the UK. Reckless Records still proudly waves a flag as one of the most reputable record dealers in the country and has been built upon the dependability, curation and assistance of friends and staff. 

As a collector and a DJ, Patrick's own taste is impeccable, spanning a breadth of wild electronics, experimental soundscapes and beyond. We asked him to record a mix which represents a portion of his collection and he delivers in fine style.

Dovydas Platakis is a DJ and producer representing the underground layers of Tauragė – a small city in the West of Lithuania. To honour his pseudonym, he delivers his vision of music in a chaotic, uncultured way, mixing different genres and styles. Old school hip-hop lover, he started to produce a long time ago, mostly sending his demos and promos only to his friends and now – to the delight of music lovers all over the world – finally going into deeper waters.
