Form N Function [Free Download]

Ranging between hardware machines and analog sound and inspired by the latin american nature, Cyanea is a new project from the Colombian and Venezuelan artists, Dsum and Mata. Both devotees to the dub-atmospheric and deep electronic music teamed up to create "Strepto Sonaris," their debut EP soon to be available on Monofónicos Netlabel.

Formed in 2022, Cyanea found its creative unity while based in Orlando, Florida. Both artists brought their experiences and cultural backgrounds to the project, resulting in a sonic adventure paying tribute to the steemed atmosphere in the Andean mountains.

The EP features three tracks recorded in collaboration, showcasing their ability to craft substantial compositions pushing boundaries and challenging conventional notions of electronic music. The first two cuts, "Strepto Sonaris" and "Compas," capture the essence of Cyanea's sound, with ethereal melodies and compelling grooves driving listeners straight into a mental numb. On the third track, "Auriceps," they leave the Detroit-inspired slot covered by a well-constructed arrangement that shines with its delightful synth design.

On the other side, Dsum's solo contribution to this release share perspective with the Swedish producer Samuel L Session. Known for his legendary and driving Techno sound, Samuel L brings his interpretation of "Temptation," adding a new dimension to the EP and expanding its sonic palette.

It has always been said that nostalgia is that common meeting point that we all share equally. A place where a simple bath of memories is capable of brightening up the darkest and most distressed days. In Parallel Universe, Dsum transports us back to those times when the depth of old school house and techno nourished our spirits.
 
After launching the ‘BDR’ digital series on his own label Back Door Records, the Colombian DJ and producer returns with a new full-length album that perfectly encapsulates that deep attribute he has worked so well over the years. Parallel Universe is made up of eleven tracks, which were the result of recording sessions worked between 2018 and 2020.
 
Inspired by the vast expressions of spatiality, the album conveys that unparalleled essence of the Detroit of yesteryear, an era when labels like Transmat and Metroplex elevated us in body and soul. “Aurora”, the opening track, deploys that robotic grooviness through the MOSTRO, an FM synthesizer assembled in the middle of the mountains of Medellín. “Delta”, “237 Miles” and “Mado”, on the other hand, showcase the deepness seasoning characteristic of Dsum, bringing back those timeless old school vibes from the windy city.
 
His favorite pick, “Night Decompression”, slowly assembles that dancefloor climax that makes you lose any notion of time in the midst of obscurity, a state where the music continues without any kind of prejudice.
 
Parallel Universe is, therefore, an album that keeps vivid a handful of sonic memories carved by an artist who refuses to compromise his creative authenticity. Through a much more mature and classic sound, programmed and sequenced by himself, Dsum shows the simplicity of his ideas, while embracing countless emotions that his space in time has brought with it.

So good to play at Video Club in Bogota during my visit to Colombia. I loved the opportunity to warm up the night from these ambient, down-tempo sounds to build a solid groove on the dancefloor. From classic electro influences to lo-fi dub techno, the new Dsum's release is landing in a mystic zone, exploring breaks, reverse kicks, and low tempo rhythms.

The first track, "313 Clones" is a Detroit-influenced "trap" with deep melodies alongside those seventy's vocoder samples. On the other side, "Fantasy" is the producer's favorite, dub essential, profound, with a bass made from the reverse kick and a sequence going out of tune to land into that spooky vibe.

For the House side, "Love Machine" is the neutral rhythm and relaxing track of this EP, Funky and chill with a great bass line that gives you that head move. Also, in the end, a hypnotic "loop" tool for those creative DJs!

PREMIERE: DSUM - Fantasy [Back Door Records]

Acid and Electro have been a solid base for every techno artist since the early days in Detroit, becoming the genres that inspired hundreds of new artists all around the world, filling up the dancefloor with constant energy and making a feeling that represents the music of the future. "Time Revelation" is a mix tape that compiles some of the tracks that influenced me in the last days, including old-school gems from the motor city and lots of new music and artists I recently explored. 

Here is a 2-hour set recorded in my studio where you can lose your mind digging inside those electric melodies. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did recording it.

Dsum's newest EP 'Acid Delivery', a trip that aims to send waves through the Acid House and Classic Techno scenes. This release whilst only being a single track takes you on a voyage into the realms of Acid, Groove, and Acid Techno, serving as a homage to the raw and unadulterated sounds that define these genres.

'State of Acid', is a mind-bending journey that showcases Dsum's prowess in manipulating the classic Roland TB-303 to create squelchy and hypnotic lines that will make any dance floor move in rhythm. The groove is undeniable, the acid is potent, and the techno roots run deep.

"The important thing is not to make it, but to stay," the popular saying goes. In electronic music, especially in these times we live, remaining can be an act as valuable as political and revolutionary itself. In Medellín, that valley of mountains where one of the most transgressive scenes of the Latin American circuit is germinating, the name of Dsum still resonates with the same force as it did in those early days of the new millennium.

More than two decades after his involvement with music, Dsum's legacy remains as one of the indelible imprints of the city's electronic landscape. Mixing records since the late '90s, Dsum, a sound engineer by profession, was part of that first handful of DJs capable of combining the condiments of genres such as house, techno, and hip hop into one simple essence. Along with names like Morris and Christopher, Dsum began to propel the figure of the selector within Medellín. At the same time, by the end of 2008, he became part of the netlabel Monofónicos, one of the first platforms to group the city's emerging producers and DJs.

Years later, he decides to settle in the United States, more precisely in the state of Florida, from where he creates his label, Back Door Records, along with its subdivision Play Function Issues, both spaces where the deepest nuances find the perfect environment to live alongside more dancefloor orientated rhythms. Dividing releases among his other aliases, Immigrant Chant and Eviru Dibad, Dsum explores the deepest territories of deep house and dub techno. This is a clear example of an artist who has managed to stay and still has a long way to go.
