Returning to the grit of the pavement for fall 2013, Liondub International launches the $treet $eries, featuring new styles and names up until now unheard in our artist roster. Best known for releases on Manchester’s G13 Records and Jaydan’s Smokin’ Riddims out of Leicester, the chopped drum and bass structures of Hoogs, channel the rough northern rhythms for our first $treet $eries release.  It storms in with “Murda”, featuring Pad Anthony, where brief toasts with plenty of delay rub against the stop-start drums and chunks of low fidelity bass and electronics. “Outcast” is a steadier cut as a tight jump up rhythms holds it down against a bed of frenetic samples and stabs, with occasional breakdowns that expand into shimmering clarity. “Mountain People” is a pacier roller punctuated with blasts of bass and more similarly hectic textural elements. Continuing to up the pace with hi-energy drums, the long vocal sample of “Pu**y” leads into minutes of pure destructive low end and rapid percussion switch offs. “Haunted Riddim” follows almost without a break, the drums accelerating amidst a sound palette seemingly based on a video game interpretation of a haunted mansion. Five cuts deep with rugged rhythms built for the road, Hoogs brings maximum impact for the first look into Liondub’s new series which will feature everything from Jump Up, Liquid, Dubstep, Reggae Dancehall and even HipHop styles.

UK Drum and Bass geniuses Sigma are about to drop their latest track “Rudeboy”.   

Already playlisted by 1Xtra, the single features vocals from South London rapper and singer DOCTOR who has worked with some of the top tier of international dance producers such as DJ Chuckie, Gregor Salto, Chase & Status and Plastician. 

The track’s classic Jungle/D&B sound won strong support from 1Xtra’s MistaJam. An early champion of the track, he made “Rudeboy” his Jam Hot record of the week (w/c November 4th). DJ Friction gave the single its debut play as the ‘Friction Fire’ on his show on Radio 1.  Another early supporter was chart star Example who declared his love for the track on Twitter.

Posted on leading DnB channel UKF, the official video – a gritty, hard-hitting dramatization of everyday heroics – has already had over 100 thousand views. 

“Rudeboy” follows on from “Summer Calling”, Sigma’s first release with 3 Beat and the track that propelled them into the spotlight. “Summer Calling” spent two weeks at Number 1 on the Music Week Urban Club Chart and reached number 5 in the Beatport chart.  It’s had close to 229,000 views on UKF and has racked up another 127,000 views on Liquicity. 

An integral part of the DnB scene, Sigma (aka Cameron Edwards and Joe Lenzie) have rapidly been gaining a reputation for their eclectic style of dance floor beats. Their track “All Blue” is the most downloaded song of all time on drum and bass arena. They’ve collaborated with artists such as DJ Fresh, Rusko and remixed Stylo G, Ellie Goulding, Eric Prydz, Groove Armada, Skepta and Sway.

For the 23rd release on Liondub International, the label looks to two legends of their respective areas for a new double-A side in fine style. Ranking Joe is one of the top talents of the original Jamaican deejay scene who remains active to this day, and his mellifluous chat brought him fame from day one and remains very much unchanged to this day. Marcus Visionary is a pillar of Liondub International and a legend in his own right, and here they contribute one brand new tune and a radical revisitation of Ranking Joes tune and riddim of said name "General."  From the beginning of ‘Ram Dance Selecta’, Joe’s rapid-fire flow sounds perfectly at home over the riddim, and he takes the tempo transitions in total stride as the tune alternates between drum-heavy breaks and more relaxed reggae vibes. All of his inimitable vocal technique is in full effect, with multisyllabic tongue twisters rolling rapid-fire over the drum breaks. The duo’s “Jungle General” is a harder interpretation with a more aggressive re-version from Marcus with battering amens and super sub freqs. Instead, with its hard bass stabs and shifting drums, it serves as a showcase for the deejay’s vocal dexterity as he raps, and rolls his flow around rapid-fire percussion changes. It’s two tough contributions from two vital artists, and it sends Liondub International strong into summer festival season and finally into Fall 2014.

Another debut from a fresh UK talent, for the 8th edition of Liondub International’s $treet $eries we present the debut of Damage Report, a producer from the UK’s south coast who has been involved in the drum & bass scene since 1997. Associated with such newer talents as DJ Sly, DJ Pacso, DJ Guv, and crews like the Class A Recordingz, Re-Wired Beatz, and Low Down Deep Recordings, as well as a fresh release about to drop on DJ Hype & Pascals 'New Playaz' imprint, he states his mission at producing original music with feeling and soul influenced by classic jump up, dark, and minimal drum & bass, and this is immediately apparent from the five tracks on this debut EP. ‘Move N Sway’ features a jazz-inflected bassline next to insistent hand percussion, looped vocal samples, spookier atmospherics, and an understated reggae pulse. His jump up influences figure more strongly on ‘Crack It’, where ominous moods and the title’s vocal sample propel a simpler but adroitly-executed piece of straight up d&b. Keeping the diversity up and edging towards moodier vibes, ‘Substance” takes extended swaths of female vocals against a combination of subtler drum programming and intense rolls to accompany the rising atmospheres of the pads. “Nothing As Bad” strips things back to rude bass & drums in the true old school fashion, but for “Got Something” he combines this mood with his more idiosyncratic traits for something quirky and original that moves between dark and slightly humorous elements. Spread across five tracks with style and impact to spare, Damage Report’s debut adds more depth and impact to Liondub International’s expeditions into these streets.

the last time i recorded a drum & bass set it was on a cassette tape over 10 years ago. in 2012 i was finally able to return to my original love, dive into my old vinyl, and play some jungle: b2b with eats everything at bestival, b2b with totally enormous extinct dinosaurs at secret garden party, and as a guest of bachelors of science at their monthly at monarch in sf. for those of you who were not able to catch one of these rare pilgrimages back to my roots, i have recorded a special set just for you featuring a handful of my all time favorite records. happy new year and i hope you enjoy!
