J Saul Kane / Depth Charge tribute DJ mix

This is a mix focusing on percussive dub and roots. I put it together after a DJ gig where I had the pleasure of playing a longer than normal set which enabled me to be a bit self indulgent in the first hour and just play percussive drum based music which seemed like a nice way to set the tone for the rest of the evening. When I got back home I thought it was a good opportunity to try to capture that moment by putting  a quick mix together before the records returned to my chaotic filing system (or lack of it) probably never to be seen again for several years.

Drums (in particular Nyabinghi) play a central role in reggae and dub and I hope this mix captures some of the spiritual transcendence they deliver.

The versatility of On-U Sound shines in this generous mix from the label crew, “90 minutes of deep cuts, lost classics and non-label Sherwood productions, recorded using two turntables and a stack of original vinyl.” There’s the classic fluttering horns, hot sticky bass and guitars, from the likes of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and Dub Syndicate, and then there’s the leftfield grooves of African Head Charge with whirring, rattling, thunking drums and percussion, the drilling industrial soundscape of Mark Stewart & The Maffia.
