Today we have an extremely special resident DJ treat for you. Zaba, our Head of Ops, is here to bring you a punk/rock, protest infused bass music mix to raise awareness of the growing issue of venue closure that the grassroots and hospitality industry is currently facing. 

She is also joined in the second half of the mix by the lovely Wilt - who MC'd for us at our first ever event in August at Basement 45, Bristol. He wrote some custom bars for this mix and delivered them emotionally and impactfully.

The Queen of Croaks blesses us with one of her iconic edit mixes!

Where do we start, this mix is the definition of a journey. Zaba carefully curates hers sounds to create an audio novella soundscape exploring emotions and provoking thought to truly make you feel everything. If you're not familiar with Zaba's edits, our advice to you is to go in open minded! A lot of her sampling is subtle - so make sure to sit down with your headphones on and enjoy the journey of her English teacher-inspired style of creating.

Zaba is a multi-genre DJ from Oxford. As well as her unique edits/sampling series of storytelling mixes,  she is also the founder of the grassroots collectives Croakheads and Croakheads North. She is an outspoken activist for grassroots venues and has supported DJs in the scene such as Jam Thieves and Kara, as well as being upcoming support for Ed Solo and Deekline.

Zaba is always pushing herself to new creative boundaries/ideas. Her mixes are often political or literature-based in nature and she has gifted us a VIP special edition of her first ever Edits mix that she created. The original mix was created using hot cue layering of live samples and manual computer mouse-trimming on DDJ-200s and Rekordbox 6 - a feat she is ludicrously proud of; the limits of her tools never stopped her art. And for her year anniversary of her Zaba Edits projects, she chooses to recreate her mix of "1984" by George Orwell. 

Expect political activism, connection to art and several film samples as you navigate your way through the dystopic superstate of Oceania.

Champion Mix 029: Zaba [Edits]

Coming in with some heat for this weeks guest mix is the one known as @flxin_dnb, from Bedfordshire 🔥🔥

FLXIN first got into raving when he was 18, initially starting off with Bassline but eventually finding his way into DnB 🙌

During lockdown he began DJing as a bit of a hobby but over time came to love it more and more 💜
His interest in music expanded beyond just DJing this year however and he has now started production with a goal of releasing his first tune by the end of the year 👀🥳

Inspired by artists such as Sub Focus, Dimension, and Metrik it is no shock that his main style to playout is Dancefloor but he does like to 'add Neuro, Jump up and 4x4 drops in the sets to keep the vibe changing'. 🕺

He likes to curate mixes that are 'melodic but also have that dark feel to them' 😈
And one of the biggest highlights for him so far has been supporting Hybrid Minds at Unit Nine, 'I played an hour and a half set and was so grateful to play a set like that supporting a massive name in the scene'

He loves how DnB can 'bring any type of person together, it's the one genre that has no boundaries and has a real family feel to it'🫶
