There’s very little information out there on èvia, which is part of their allure. What is known about them is that they’re based in New Zealand, they quietly release music via their Bandcamp subscription service and over the last few months they’ve caught the attention of some of the most respected names in ambient music, from Space Afrika to Special Guest DJ. 

It’s not surprising. The elusive producer may be from New Zealand but their music isn’t conceptually attached to any specific place. Like the videos they post on their YouTube channel, their songs are shrouded in a hazy fog of ambient electronics and amorphous, organic textures, similar in spirit to the nebulous sounds of artists on labels like Motion Ward, Experiences Ltd and sferic.

If you’re unfamiliar with èvia, this mix is a pretty perfect introduction to their world. The tracks suggest “the haziness of a distant memory” and evoke the same dreamlike quality as their music and videos. The recording moves through a heady blend of aquatic burblings, glistening textures and synth blips from the likes of perila, YABUJIN and Pontiac Streator. It also includes two particularly great forthcoming tracks by TIBSLC and èvia themselves.

q. pls introduce yourself

> My name is Gary Hunter. I run a small music website called Low End Theorists and the Theory Therapy mix series, plus co-host a couple of radio shows with Daniel Patrin.

q. is there a story behind the mix? how did it come together?

> I recorded it after a long walk in Sydney. It’s the middle of winter just now but we tend to get really clear crisp days. I moved here about 4 years ago from Scotland and I’ll never take for granted how nice it is to wake up to sun most days. I wanted the mix to provide a snapshot of that feeling. Really calming, almost quasi-religious tracks.

q. what would be the ideal circumstances to enjoy your mix?

> Maybe in one of those floatation tanks. Or as you fall asleep.

q. describe a favourite object in your living room...

> My TV or my old, but still great CDJ-350s.

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?

> We’re turning Theory Therapy into a label. We’ll be announcing our first release in the next week or so.

Martin Schulte is the alias of Marat Shibaev from Kazan, Russia. He started his musical career 15 years ago working with netlabels and being nominated in the outstanding Qwartz Awards 2008 with the successful cooperation with Sinergy Networks. During the following years, Martin began an incredibly prolific stage with label releases such as Lantern / Naturebliss, RareNoise Records or Telrae. Martin's hard work in the studio allows him to participate in various events in Paris, Moscow and Tokyo, making Martin a huge impact producer on the dubtech scene. In recent years he has been focused on his cooperation with the Japanese label Lantern / Naturebliss, and creating his own label, 'Slow Beauty', where he reissues singles from his first albums. All of these Martin Schulte projects have had a huge impact on the new electronic dub scene. For the next 7 years, Martin Schulte concentrated in cooperation with Lantern / Naturebliss and launched his own brand. 'Slow Beauty', where it will be reissued on wax singles from his early albums. Without a doubt, Schulte makes a valid and noteworthy contribution with the release of albums like "Seeeing Tokyo", "Forest", "Season" or "Ocean".
Marat Shibaev follows his own fundamental path: "Deep music from the depths of the soul."

Martin Schulte - Dub Techno TV Podcast Series #43

@octalindustries is the solo project of Jónas Thor Gudmundsson. The project was originally founded in 2003 by Jonas and Mike Sickinger, the founder of the Octal label. The debut release of their collaboration was the Automatik EP on the Transistor Rhythm output. Couple of years later they joined their friend Deep Chord for a shared 12“ release, which today is a quite a valuable gem for dub techno lovers. The three of them joined hands together later that year to create a 3x12“ release undir the pseudonym Spectral Network. The release was quite limited (111 copies) and was considered one of the most interesting 12“ releases that year by many critics. 
After the release of the Spectral Network eps the duo went for hiatus as other projects took over, also as opportunity for musical collaborations became harder as the Atlantic Ocean divides them. Jonas continued working on other projects as @ruxpin – producing numerous releases along the way. 
In 2011 the duo was asked by the French independent label @entropy-records to do some releases. As Michael was unable to participate, Jonas went on solo and worked on a full-length release, which later became Meeting of the Waves LP. Another remix followed for G.R.I.T. which was hailed by dubtechnoblog.com as the best remix of the year 2012.   
In more recent years, Octal Industries has been working on numerous collaborations with artists such as fellow Icelander @ohm-599575574 - and fruits of their work has been released on labels such as @thule-records, Rawax, @luckofaccess, @allinnrecords and many more. 
Octal Industries also released works independently in 2019 an EP entitled Julia Sets on @kontaktrecordscph, which featured a remix from the Detroit legend @mikehuckaby – and his second full-length album Our Seasons, which was released on Vertex in December 2019. 
Octal Industries, although being Icelandic in origin, works and resides in Tallinn, Estonia.

Quadrant Soundscape presents In Focus: Greyscale

For the second mix of our 'In Focus' series we turn the spotlight onto one of our favourite Dub Techno labels, and one of the most consistent in terms of the quality of their output. We bring to you, Greyscale.

Having begun back in 2012 by Lithuanian producer Grad_U, Greyscale has gone on to play host to some of the worlds finest Dub Techno producers including the likes of XDB, Resoe, Ohrwert, Mike Schommer, Fluxion, Federsen and DeepChord to name a few. 

In 2021, Greyscale introduced us to their 'Mood Compiled', which are 20 track double CD/digital compilations, consisting of 1 track from each of the previous 'Mood Series' EP's release on the label. 
The 1st (#1-#20) was released early in 2021 and the 2nd instalment (#21-#40) was released in the last few days.
The Mood Series itself, was intended to be for up and coming artists around the world, but as the series began, most of them were already the cream of the crop. And without question, the quality of the music was so good, they became some of the best releases in the genre.

2021 has also seen Greyscale introduce us to the brilliant 'Exposure Series'. These releases are where the emphasis is getting the featured artists to vinyl. As we are big lovers of physical releases, this is something we personally have appreciated greatly, especially knowing how difficult and time consuming vinyl production is, yet Greyscale never fail to surprise us with the quality of the vinyl that comes from them. 

Greyscale has always grown from strength to strength, but notably it has been strong from the very first releases. For this mix we wanted to try and highlight these strengths, and also show the diversity that can be found at such a formidable record label.

Electronic music specialist Andrea Cichecki is an artist inspired by sound. Born in the Netherlands with Polish roots, Andrea has had a lifelong fascination with emotion, human connection and how these intertwine with music and sound. Her atmospheric music can be described as a dreamful sound collage, lifting us away into a flow of emotions. The musical intent is built on a landscape that sweeps from intense joy to melancholic emotion, a cinematic journey of life and memories. Andrea’s main inspiration is the inner peace found through connection with nature. For over two decades, Andrea performed as a DJ across Europe. For seven years, she lived in Berlin where she was integral to the electronic music scene and a regular DJ playing in renowned clubs such as Club der Visionaere, Hoppetosse, Tresor and About Blank. After successful releases of her own music, she knew it was time to follow her dreams. Achieving a diploma for her studies in ‘Music Production & Sound Engineering’ at the Abbey Road Institute helped her enrich her sound, expand her creative mind and build on her professionalism.  These days Andrea is in high demand as a music producer and audio engineer: composing, mixing, mastering as well as working at Castle Studios in the countryside, just outside Dresden.
