I AM LONO are an electronic pop punk synth duo from Nottingham - they are Matthew Cooper and David Startin. The pair formed the band after realising a shared obsession for The Doors, Hunter S Thompson and John Carpenter. 

Initially they began experimenting with sprawling soundtracks, which they then condensed into violent pop songs with big vocals.  They named the project I AM LONO, a reference to a moment of madness in the Hunter S Thompson book, The Curse of Lono, when Hunter captures a huge Marlin and beats it to death with a Samoan war club and returns to shore screaming triumphantly: ‘I am Lono’. 

They’ve been heavily supported by BBC Introducing Nottingham, played Dot to Dot Festival and have supported Palma Violets, Savages and Walls.

The music they make is all written and recorded with collaborator Chris Moore (Echoboy; Spotlight Kid) in their basement studio. All the songs are recorded in this room and mixed down to reel-to-reel tape. Their songs have been played on BBC 6 Music and BBC Introducing, and a specially made limited run of cassette tapes recently sold out in Rough Trade.

Medical Records releases the first full length LP in 5 years by LA’s Geneva Jacuzzi. To say Jacuzzi is a multifaceted artist would be an understatement. She is well known for her uncompromisingly obtuse synth-driven pop and one-of-a-kind performance art that is comprised of one time only spectacles and installations. Her works have been presented in famous art institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, MOCA and numerous other venues across the globe. She has developed a very focused cult following in the art AND music scenes. She was originally well known for her multitude of self-released home recordings but also released a full length Lamaze in 2010 on the Vinyl International to much acclaim. Not to mention her track The Sleep Room featured on The Minimal Wave Tapes Vol 2. Technophelia is the culmination of a hybrid of DIY and professional studio recordings (with the help of esteemed producer Chris Coady) that resulted in this exquisite album. Features the soon-to-be-hits I’m A TV and Cannibal Babies. Lovers of unique and left-field wave such as Gina X, Ronny, and the like will be transfixed by the raw, oozing newness of it all. 'Good Sense' is taken from Hash Redactor's debut album entitled 'Drecksound', out April 26th through Upset The Rhythm and Goner Records.

A quick glance at the résumés of Hash Redactor’s members might seed certain expectations.  The band is fronted by guitarist Alec McIntyre of Ex-Cult, with NOTS rhythm warriors Meredith Lones on bass and Charlotte Watson on drums, and rounded off by George Williford on second guitar.  But their debut full-length dives into territory that feels distinctly untethered from their lineage and era.  Drecksound is a clattering, shambolic oasis in the sleek digital desert of the late twenty-teens.  
 
Perhaps both because and in spite of the alienation that typifies the glut of rock music at the end of this god-damned decade, these twelve songs deliver a pointed social criticism, more cathartic than suffocating, while championing a nihilism that greets the abyss by laughing mockingly in its face. The chorus to the incendiary Step 2: Success is sneered, not sung, “It’s a long con job and you just got it wrong / banned from the world.” Or take Open Invite’s opening missive, “I won’t settle for anything less than a four-star refugee camp.” McIntyre’s lyrics present a puckish fascination with humankind’s rake-stepping self destruction.  He’s a merry prankster, but more in the mold of a jackbooted Monty Python character than a Ken Kesey acid casualty. Case in point: A-side epic In The Tank, where a vindictive custodian boils alive the wealthy patrons at the sensory-deprivation tank facility where he works.
 
McIntyre and Williford’s guitar interplay on Drecksound draws from some weird rundown of usual and unusual suspects in the tight corner of avant-punk guitar work, recalling some free-association that includes: Marquee Moon, John Fahey gone electric, the playing on Ornette Coleman’s mid-70s Body Meta and Dancing In Your Head, prime-era Flesheaters, and (why not) the first two Meat Puppets albums. Without anything resembling traditional leads, guitars snake in, out and around Lones’s bass lines, which alternate between slinky earworm hooks and steel cable raw power.  All of this is locked in by Watson’s characteristically visceral swing.  It doesn’t feel controversial to claim that the duo of Watson and Lones constitutes one of the best rhythm sections to be heard anywhere in contemporary punk music.
 
Having played out heavy in 2018 with a refined live show, a four-song demo, and several Gonerfest appearances under their belt, HR cut the record at home on a borrowed 8-track cassette machine. The deranged raw tracks were mixed into final form by Matt Qualls at Young Avenue Sound, and mastered by Jason Ward at Chicago Mastering. Hash Redactor will be touring the States in summer and with plans for Europe later in 2019. Drecksound is out April 26 on Upset the Rhythm in UK/EU and the rest of the world on Goner.

INTRODUCING: THE FLAG AND “OFF MUSIC”

Let’s start with clarity, and reassurance: The Flag is not another Black Flag reunion band. 

The Flag, which is the artist Ted McGrath’s latest musical project, works in a tradition of New York I only know as 'off music'. A classic sound, turned inside-out. Monk was off. Liquid Liquid was off. Talking Heads were off. Rap was so off! Velvets--a thousand miles off. Even the Strokes were off, if only because *nothing* was off about the Strokes. 

His voice reminds me of weirdo New York crooners like Alan Vega and David Byrne and Sal Principato, though I find him more lovable. Rhythmically the music is very much indebted to stuff like Suicide and Liquid Liquid and On The Corner. Heavy stuff but again: Ted is the people’s champ. “Alpha 60 Punch Out” is the a-side. It’s built off an irresistible full-spectrum percussion loop that propels the song through six or seven distinct movements. On the flip is the introspective "Neighbors": a maximum-delay guitar number about a specific NYC rite of passage known as Getting Mugged.

If you’re playing Brooklyn Noise Bingo at home, this whole release--a teaser for what we hope will be more soon--is a gold mine. Ted played in These Are Powers and Antimagic, and his iconic messy visual style regularly appears on show posters and album covers around town. Jeremy Scott recorded both songs at Civil Defense right before Hurricane Sandy knocked him and many other friends of ours out of commission. Sarah Register of Talk Normal mastered both tracks at The Lodge, and gave them their impossible spread across the stereo field. “Alpha 60 Punch Out” b/w “Neighbors” is available digitally worldwide and on limited edition cassette at the GODMODE shop mid July.

Duchess Says was created in late 2003 by four influent members of the Church of Budgerigars who decided to collaborate together in a common musical project. Their goal was to insure a faithful representation of the message of the Duchess (or spiritual budgie) through a precise artistic dialog. Composed of A-Claude (vox, keytar, guitar), Ismael (keyboard,guitar), Phil (guitar, bass,feedbacks) and Simon Says (lo-fi beats, drums and doubtful noises). Duchess Says is serving us a repertory of "moog rock" songs strong in images and enormoustly intense live performances!Their musical influences range from no wave, new wave, punk, to cinema and visual arts. If you pay attention, you could see them perform in the most unusual places such as golf courses, shop windows, vacant building sites etc.. Duchess Says has the mandate to decontextualise the rock and to promote simultaneously their Church on the way.
